While I don't like the prospect of having to face Brad Smith in a rival fan's uniform, and while I will miss his productivity, I think having him on this team is like having training wheels on a bike. Sanchez needs the wheels to come off now, and we'd be wasting money if we kept him as simply a return man and a 5th wide receiver.
I think Brad will be courted by someone looking to make a splash (like the Redskins w/Antwan Randle-el) and it will not be prudent to match his contract.
Until there is a new CBA why lose sleep over any of it. Nobody knows what the cap will be if there is a cap. Nobody knows if there will even be a season and nobody can negotiate with anybody until all of that is settled.
Brad smith , great situational guy but Tom Brady / Peyton Manning etc o not need a gimmick to free up the defense. Sanchez should be given Edwards and Holmes and we draft a RB in the 3rd rd and let this kid take us forward. Sanchez is our future and if we even consider giving a KR/ST/5th WR more than $2 million we want butt fucking!
brad smith indeed should hit free agency. we cannot pay this guy millions to run the wildcat...especially when we dont need to run the wildcat. id rather pay BSmith to be a #2 QB. if we lose sanchez we are most likely fucked anywho.
Brad smith, great guy who someone will completely overpay. Average WR , good kr and runs a gimmick play every so often. Will he be missed yes but only in the way Leon was i.e he can be easily replaced by yet another situational player. Holmes, Edwards and Cromartie should be our priorities as anyone wanting to see Kyle Wilson start , sideline help or no sideline help , is stretching the boundaries of second year improvement!
I'm not sure. But Smith has all the signs of being a player that the rest of the AFCE hates to face, and the other teams would be happy to find ways to turn him against his former team. Like Woodhead and Welker as the most recent and obvious NE examples. I would think Belichick would try and use him a lot more frequently than NY has, and to make more use of his versatility (letting him pass every now and then, for instance).
Woodhead = RB with good speed and receiving ability Welker = tough WR with excellent route running ability and the ability to break off his routes and finding an open spot in a defense Brad Smith = WR with awful hands, good athletic ability that's best used in the wildcat which the New England Patriots don't use and the Dolphins pretty much scrapped. Good KR but that's not a position worth investing big $ into and if they do it's not worth matching I don't think the demand for his services in the AFC East will be as large as you think.
I bet they'll make a run at Ronnie Brown as well. I'm sure they'll find a way to incorporate Ronnie Brown and make him a pro bowler, which Miami failed to do for the past 6 years.
to the OP question, i think Brad Smith will get offered more money than the Jets can match. I also think he'd be a great fit in Miami, or just about anywhere else. He's not just a KR as some have mentioned. He is all over ST as a cover guy as well. On offense, he's versatile, and likely has not reached max potential in the right system. Also a high character guy, smart, and is a team first player. Not a guy you break the bank for, but a valuable role player. That said, i'm hoping he lands in the NFC.....as i'd hate to root against him.
I doubt we see Brad go anywhere. He loves it here and knows his role very well. Brad has stated he doesn't expect to be a premier receiver and enjoys his all purpose role. As long we have offer him something decent he'll stay. Brad just signed a 1 year deal this past year worth about $1.8 million, and he had about the same type of year. If some team wants to give him much more than that, well god bless em.
He didn't have much of a choice about his contract this past year because he was a restricted free agent. it was accept the 1.8 tender or not play this year. Smith is, in all likelihood, gone. He's a nifty player (a third WR/Wildcat threat/good returner/ST maven) and someone's going to offer him a lot more than the Jets can pay.
Teams could've gotten his services though if they wanted. I'd be shocked if he did not return. It all depends though on who we keep. If we do end up keeping Holmes and Edwards I could see him going. Even then I still see him as a Jet. Guys like that are the types of guys Rex loves.
100%. do not need to see the wildcat anymore. id rather have the QB on the field. we dont need to resign this dude. id rather have both WR's.
