^^If we address our pass rush this offseason and are able to get difference makers in the front 7, opposing QBs will have less time in the pocket and will have to rush throws, meaning they'll more than likely try to get it to their first read who'll likely be covered by Revis. If that turns out to be the case, our #2 CB, be it Cro or K-Dub, may see less throws coming their direction next year as opposed to the amount this year.
To be fair, with a better pass rush he won't have to. Like Mick said, it'll come down to money. If Cro needs it quickly, he may be willing to sign at a discount. As long as it doesn't impact our ability to re-sign our receivers, I'd love to have him back.
There's fire and then there's playing opposite the unquestioned best CB in the NFL. I think the latter is worse than the former.
In my opinion, Shonn Greene won't stay healthy without another between-the-tackles ball carrier on the roster. Whether it's through free agency or the draft, we need to bring in another capable back...someone that can take some of the punishment off of Greene. He's a powerful, productive runner when he gets the ball, but the feature back is a dying breed. I see no reason why we should give him that many more carries. LT only had 34 more carries than Greene in the regular season. I agree with you that keeping Tomlinson is a good move, but I don't know if that will happen. Everyone on this site knows I think Joe McKnight can play. He's still a young player and if LT doesn't come back, we'll only have two backs on the roster. If a talent like LeShoure falls that far, we should pull the trigger. Pittsburgh was in a similar situation in 2008 - they had Willie Parker on the roster already, but when Mendenhall fell a little bit, they took him. After last night's game, we all know how that turned out.
Is signing Cro third on the priority list after signing both WRs? I say Cro and one of the WRs. I think it's easier to find a quality WR than it is to find a quality CB.
We need new uniforms if were not the same old jets lets chuck these fuckin things and really get away from our past
It takes the average rookie receiver about two or three seasons to completely pick up the pro game. Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards know this offense and Mark Sanchez has chemistry with both of them. Why mess up a good thing? The same could be said about a corner. Kyle Wilson was drafted high for a reason. He'll take Cromartie's spot if our team decides to part with him.
You know what you should do? 1. Soak your "same old Jets" jersey in kerosene. 2. Put on your "same old Jets" jersey. 3. Light a match. 4. Stop posting on TGG. It's not a fun place for burn victims.
Its about youth, its about like you said speed. The LBs, to me, are an overrated group collectively. The ILBs are not, they get the work done. But when we discuss all LBs as a whole, they aren't elite. They are above average to good. They need to be great in order for this team to return to 09 form. To me, its about returning to 09 form. 09 defense with Sanchez in his 3rd year which is the breakout year will equal a SB berth. I'm sure of that. Draft me a pass rusher in the 1st round or a DE who can make the OLBs look good and its a step in right direction. Tommy Z from Notre Dame would be a welcome addition. Westhoff would love him too, he's good on STs as well. I can see TC having 8 safeties in competition at one time. Pool had a good 2nd half, I wonder what Rex/Pettine want to do. There no Ed Reeds to be found with FO moves this year. Hunter can reach one notch above JAG, but I don't see him getting any better than that. He's athletic as fuck but he's not a road grader and the running game will suffer. If there is an upgrade, keep him in the backup role and find it. I think Turner/Hunter is one of the best backup tandems in the NFL. Slauson will get better from here on out, which means the middle-to left side of the line is set for the next 5 years. Sanchez's blind side is protected. I'm a big "if you have the man to replace him, then do it" kind of guy. I think its an extremely tough move to not resign the man who the team voted Team MVP this season. That move will not settle well in the locker room. Sanchez's weapons do take a priority over anything else this offseason, but Harris has to be resigned. I think the draft is a fine place to find OLBs and DEs, and FA may have to be sacrificed this year. The Jets aren't going to win the offseason award this year as they've done the past two seasons. I've always said trench guys can play into their mid 30s, so Pouha has 4 years left. That means an understudy needs to be here, now. If MTV is that guy, then he stays, but I'm ready to see a draftee learn from him and Jenkins, and I don't see him being their size. I can see DeVito being the only familiar face in the DE grouping this year if Ellis is not going to take a cheap salary from the Jets FO. Because of the Rex factor, he may take the paycut and stay here. I'm ready for him to move on, which means I can finally buy his jersey. Gilbert, Dixon, etc. They are developmental guys who may not reach the potential to be difference makers on this front 7. I can't have Rex think that his schemes are going to be able to mask the shortcomings of this squad. LaBeau's schemes are fantastic, but he has fantastic players to execute the scheme. Rex needs the same. He needs top players on that Defense to return it to an elite status. Get back to 09. They'll beat anyone.
You're going to compare us to Pittsburgh in 2008? Which of our backs had the season ending injury and is about to end up the only back on our roster? Pittsburgh in 2008 had a 27 year old Willie Parker coming off a broken leg and had only signed Mewelde Moore as insurance. Further, they hadn't invested a draft pick in a back the year before, and they didn't have massive holes to fill. They were able to make that pick because they were fixed at every position but center, and had just taken William Gay the year before to backup Deshea Townsend. They really didn't have any glaring needs in that first round. We're not in that position. We have needs to be filled, two young backs already on the roster, and a mentor. I don't see the team taking a RB in the first round when they seem pleased with McKnight's progress. We shouldn't give Shonn Greene that many more carries. Sanchez is the center of this team now, and he's entering his 3rd season when most QBs start to truly get it. We ran the ball, what, around 525 times this year? I'd love to see that number drop to around 475 - 500, and see Sanchez up over the 600 attempt mark. McKnight takes some of those carries and, hopefully, LT is still around to take some as well. Like I said, if LT is cut, we will need to pick up a 3rd back, but not that early. We need to start building up solid youth at positions where it doesn't currently exist. Ideally? LT returns, works with the two backs this offseason, and once again undergoes his training regimen to get himself into shape. Next year, we're able to limit his carries to 150 - 175, get McKnight carries, and Shonn still sits around 200.
I agree; I wasn't proposing drafting a WR but rather picking a veteran WR via free agency. Both were able to come in and pick up the offense; I don't see why another seasoned but not so highly compensated WR wouldn't be able to do the same. Chemistry between Mark and his WRs can be argued. There's been several instances where Mark and his WRs were not on the same page last game was no different. It's not like we had a prolific pass offense this year and I don't suppose we will have one next year. Tieing up a lot of money on WRs seems to contradict our ground and pound philosophy. Yes to play nickel...of wait. No to return punts...oh wait. Or will Drew Coleman?
Yes, I am. Willie Parker was a proven starter, something we don't have on our roster. Their lack of depth at running back crushed them in 2007. I could care less if he was injured the year before, they won the Super Bowl the next season. We have an injury prone power back and a developmental prospect in our stable. I know that we'll pass more, but if a franchise caliber running back like Mikel LeShoure is available late in the first round, you pull the trigger...even if running back isn't at the top of your list of needs. You're basing all of this on Tomlinson coming back. We have some important players that need to be re-signed. I'm willing to bet Tannenbaum will give him the ax to free up some cash.
You should care that he was injured the year before. The Steelers sure as hell did. One of your key arguments for getting rid of Leon, as was mine, was that he was coming off a leg injury. As far as that being irrelevant because they won the Super Bowl the next year, Willie was never the same. They didn't win that Super Bowl on the ground. He averaged 3.8 YPC on the season and did little in the Super Bowl. They won that year on defense and passing. They were a bottom third team running the ball. They drafted Mendenhall because they already knew Willie might be done and because, as you said, they had no depth. Running back isn't even close to the top of our list of needs, even when you use dismissive diction to refer to Greene and McKnight. If there are OLB and DE prospects available at the end of the 1st, and knowing that we don't even have a 2nd round pick, I don't see how you can justify taking a RB and suddenly deciding we're a team that's going to win on offense and refuse to get younger on defense. I'm not basing it all on LT coming back. I'd love to see him come back, but either way, we're not in a position to go RB in the first round. You want some insurance in the form of a RB who can go between the tackles? Great. Grab a UDFA or a late round pick at best. Didn't a former UDFA lead the Chargers in rushing this season even after they took their young stud RB (with more of a need, no less)?
Actually, it was damned funny. Most of the "jokes" in this forum aren't funny, but this one made me laugh out loud. You don't live in Nigeria, do you? And only need $500 dollars to claim a 10 million dollar lottery ticket?
Not to argue with your reasoning, but DH is getting re-signed. After that we should focus on Cro and Holmes. If Edwards is really willing to take a discount, he'll have to wait. Any money left after that should be used on the front 7.
Any chance LT is willing to renegotiate the 2.4 mill? I know it's a silly thing to worry about this early but aside from production LT's proven he's a hell of a locker room leader. T.Rich, JT, Ellis, Jenk...good chance none are back. Would be nice to have some sort of vocal veteran stick around.
Do you think we can (or would) ever use Connor the same way Baltimore used their FB 2 years ago (can't believe I'm blanking on his name) as a pounding 3rd option RB?
I can't believe all those that think David Harris is a lower priority. He's the heart of the run-stopping defense and a decent blitzer. Why would you get rid of the guy that makes every offense pass? The first thing that any defense needs to do is stop the run. Otherwise, you end up like the Bills. On top of that, everyone seems to think re-signing these receivers is so much more a priority. I totally disagree. I actually think we'll be better off with one alpha-dog receiver instead of two. Cotchery is the ideal 2nd receiver and Keller a really good TE. Brad Smith has the potential to be a decent 3rd receiver. But having both Santonio and Braylon actually made us go away from who we are. We're a run-first, ground-and-pound team... Not a spread-offense, throw-all-the-time team. Also, decent receivers are a dime a dozen. There's a ton of very accomplished receivers that will be available this off-season like Moss, Owens and Ochocinco. Not to say we should sign any of them, but the fact that they're out on the street speaks to how fleeting the value of a good receiver is. My priorities: 1. Resign David Harris. He's the engine that makes our defense go. Without his (and Bryan Thomas's) run-stopping, everything else breaks down. 2. Rebuild the d-line. Pouha is decent. DeVito is a stop-gap. Ellis is getting old. Jenkins keeps getting hurt. At the very least, we need guys to start competing for these spots. 3. Sign a corner. I think Kyle Wilson is a better #2 corner than a slot corner. If we franchise Cro and trade him for a 2nd or 3rd rounder, that will be good value. 4. Sign one of Braylon/Santonio. Don't really care who, but one needs to be the man and the other shipped out. Either way, I think we'll get a 3rd rounder next year as compensation when he signs a big contract. 5. Pick up some good free agents that might become available. Seymour, Ngata, Asomugha, Woodley are all automatic if we have a chance at signing them. There are other players around the league that might get released as well. 6. Draft an OLB for the future. Pace and Thomas are no spring chickens.
David Harris is so slow....he once got tackled from behind by a big fat aging Tight End after getting a 30 yard head start.
