Agreed. The biggest problem, though, is that we really can't afford to shed OLBs from the top right now. We can't afford to replace them through FA with better players. We need someone who will come in and contribute immediately from the draft.
Really..? Wow..it's interesting you would say that. I thought Tomlinson played well..but I'd rather go younger..maybe give McKnight a shot. I think he will mature in the next year. I think LT's money should go somewhere else.
If we let Harris go, he will be a Patriot. BB wanted to draft him when we snagged him up. Would be tough seeing him in that Jersey, but we may have to let him walk and see what happens. I don't think RB is a need, I think we need to let McKnight earn his keep and then bring in an Undrafted guy. I would also like to see them keep Edwards and Holmes stay, so that would mean that Cro would have to go. Let Pool go but resign Smith. Smith is great on special teams and played much better in the playoffs this year, I think he is a solid football player who can help out. Would be nice to bring back Hunter and Coleman as well, but we will have to see what the CBA dictates.
If we tag somebody, we know that player won't be in a rush to sign the franchise tag because it will be there. Say we tag Cromartie, he won't be in a rush to sign the tag until training camp...maybe after. We'll have plenty of time to get something for him. Yeah it clogs up the cap space but even if you only get a 4th round pick for him it's better than losing him for nothing.
The same you were..ir's just my opinion. The same as yours. I'm not saying it's the right one. Or it's going to happen. No reason..to get nasty, but then that's your nature I guess.
It amazes me how no one grasps the obvious fact that the 50 million dollar man needs to be the center of attention.
Yeah, but the team can't stat making decisions based on Bill Bellichek. Not everyone is going to wind up like Danny Woodhead.
we will find out this offseason How much are free agents really want to play for Rex. Are these guys really wanting a SB or money, plus how much they love Rex. We will be a big factor in free agency this offseason.
Im hearing Asomugha wants to buddy up with Revis and create one of the deadliest CB combinations in NFL history. Word.
I think the Jets are probably going to move on from Shaun Ellis. There were rumors they were looking to dump him last offseason and now that he's a free agent, that could be the end for him. If the money is right, I wouldn't mind having him back for another year though. I may be in the minority, but I think Jenkins is going to come back next year at a reduced salary as well. I could see him playing the Trevor Pryce role next year, playing half the snaps or so, and hoping he can get pressure up the middle while Pouha and DeVito handle most of the early down "dirty work". That way we can put off addressing the D-line for at least one more year. We also have Pitoitua coming back, Tevaseu, Dixon as options.. so maybe we can piece it together.
You mean the massive $2.4 mil we'd save off the cap? We recoup that in the offseason alone if our backs are working out with LT. McKnight will get a shot. We'll be carrying 4 RBs again on the active roster each week, but two of them won't be FBs. The ball will be coming out of Sanchez's hand a lot more this season, but it's still transitional. We want LT developing them more as pass catchers, and we sure as hell will want his early season production again. He's got a role on this team, and a big one this offseason. NOBODY trains like LT, and we need that instilled in McKnight especially.
I've seen you pump Dawan Landry a few times on this site and I couldn't agree more. Loved him at GT, and he showed a lot of potential at Baltimore. IT would be great if we could bring him in.
90% of the Free Agents out there want financial security as their first priority. The other 10% already have it and want to win a championship.
And if Cro doesn't pull a safe, yet somewhat desperate move by March, he's absolutely the guy who should be tagged. He's much more likely to be willing to sign a long term deal elsewhere than Harris, and he'd probably bring more in return. I guarantee if Cro gets tagged, he's out there trying to get teams to trade for him.
I think Cromartie will be a priority actually. Rex loves DB's, and I saw no signs that he trusts Wilson, and frankly, neither do I. Cromartie is also on record as saying he stopped enjoying the game for his last two years in SD but he credits Ryan for turning that around. I think he stays. Harris is on the bubble. He is an average 3-4 ILB. My guess is he's gone. I think Holmes goes. Edwards stays. Rex was not too happy about his Schotty comments, but gave him the "emotions are high" excuse. I'd be willing with great reluctance to let Hunter go if he's too expensive, and throw Ducasse in there and live with it. Turner will be easier to sign. I doubt we can keep both. Brad Smith will be gone in the way of Leon went. He'll want more than he's worth, and will get that $, but not from the Jets. These are not losses that are easy to swallow, but I'm trying to be realistic. This team will look very different next year.
Defense. Defense. Defense. This should be the top priority going into next season. Its amazing how the last two years we've been ranked #1 and #3 in defense, yet I still believe our front 7 needs to be overhauled. If we can somehow resign both Braylon and Holmes, I believe our offense is set for at least the next 3+ years. Think about it. If LT gets cut, McKnight can replace him giving us a combo of Greene/McKnight. If TRich decides to retire, Conner can adequately replace him. We would miss out on leadership if we lost those two, but from a talent standpoint, they would fill in easily. As much as I like Woody, Hunter did a fantastic job subbing for him, plus he would cost a fraction of what we paid Woody, if we decide to resign Wayne. So altogether, I feel our offense is pretty stable going forward. QB, RB, o-line and receivers are all there. Sign some cheap FA as depth, and the offense will be great, pending better playcalling from Schotty of course. In regards to the defense, as many of the posters have said already, it starts with the lines and works backwards. Our safeties got burned on some big plays this year, but if we had constant pressure, I don't think those big plays happen at all. I love Ellis, but its time for the team to get younger. Just the nature of the business. Love DeVito as well, but he might work better as a rotational type of player. The team needs a big ass NT. It would be amazing if we somehow got Ngata form Baltimore, but I just don't see that happening with all the other players we have to resign. We have decent OLB, but they aren't fast at all. Youth and speed is what I want this offseason on the defensive side of the ball.
I agree, that's why there's a big if in my statement. I know he wouldn't so more than likely he's a goners.
