I think we definitely need to resign Holmes and Braylon, Sanchez is our key to any SB hopes so continue to put weapons around him ... Cromartie, this year he was a great investment, but I think if this team believes in Kyle Wilson and we can find another CB via FA or draft we let Cromartie walk ... he's undisciplined, he gets tons of penalties and in our secondary and when he backs off in coverage he easily gets exposed, teams will look to do that to him next season if he stays ... would he really be worth 8-10 million a season? Even a franchise tag is a bad idea when it comes to Cromartie Shaun Ellis - Resign for vet min to finish out career, he comes a rotational player Steve Weatherford - Bring him back but have some competition for him in the off-season Brodney Pool - Bring him back, but if he asks for too much money, let him walk Tony Richardson - Retiring, if he doesn't bring him back Braylon Edwards - Resign him first Wayne Hunter - Bring him back, played very well Trevor Pryce - Gone David Harris - Potentially gone, if the price is good we'll keep him, but not Willis $$$ deal Robert Turner - Bring him back Nick Folk - See Weatherford Antonio Cromartie - Gone Lance Laury - Bring back Santonio Holmes - Resign 2nd Eric Smith - Bring him back only for rotational purposes Brad Smith - Westoff would be angry if we don't bring him back, resign James Ihedigbo - Bring back Drew Coleman - Bring back Kellen Clemens - Gone Marquice Cole - Gone JT / LT - If LT wants to come back at a reduced role so be it, Greene needs to be the guy, JT absolutely gone DEDICATE this draft to defense, we need to restock at the defensive line with big agile football players, find a player that fits the scheme at the S position, and late in the draft take a chance at a young linebacker that can rush the passer, maybe take a corner late in the draft as well Bring Kris Jenkins back for the last 6 games for next season and he will have an impact on this squad
My guess... Shaun Ellis - Back for 1 more year Steve Weatherford - Gone (TJ Conley) Brodney Pool - Gone Tony Richardson - Gone Braylon Edwards - Signed Wayne Hunter- Signed Trevor Pryce - Gone David Harris - Signed Robert Turner - Signed Nick Folk - Gone Antonio Cromartie - Franchised, traded Lance Laury - Gone Santonio Holmes - Signed Eric Smith - Signed Brad Smith - Signed James Ihedigbo - Signed Drew Coleman - gone Kellen Clemens - Signed Marquice Cole - gone Michael Turkovich - ??? Marcus Dixon - signed
Just bouncing shit off the wall here, but in the scenario David Harris isn't brought back, how about resigning Bryan Thomas and playing him beside Bart Scott? He's turned into a natural LB more so than a consistent passrusher, plus he's had experience at it the last 2 years(2009 more than 2010) when they would swap Scott outside to rush the passer. I would give him the nod over DH in coverage too. He's a cheap option, knows the system, and it's not like Rex necessarily needs 2 star ILBs to make his defense work...
Thank God. Rex on his presser just basically said this team is going to be built around Sanchez from here on out.
Which means priorities become 1a. Edwards 1b. Holmes 2. Harris 3. Cromartie (not that I hate Cro but can you really lock up 24+ million in the CB position)
He's a good runstopper, but he's never played inside. I think you'll see him more as a rotational guy on run downs.
The thing about Harris is he can probably not demand as much as he might have before his relatively disappointing play. That may mean the Jets could afford to do all of keeping Cro and Harris, with both Edwards and Holmes as well. In short the problem I have with wish lists is that in the real world it will be the contract prices that will actually determine who is brought back. Having said that, my own preference is that number one should be brining back Edwards. He was the most consistent skilled position player all year, and helps the running game. Holmes would be next, followed by Cromartie. If Harris can be also signed at a good price, I would do so, but the linebacker corps otherwise needs substantial revision. Taylor may come back, but I can see Pace and Thomas both leaving. I doubt Ellis is gone, despite the criticism some have for him here. He may be the oldest of the three current starters, but he's also the best. I like Mike DeVito and Pouha, but they both have weaknesses, and objectively are no better than average for starters at their positions. Actually I think it is something a bit less than that. The Jets need to get at least two quality new starters in the front seven. Preferably three.
I hope Rex this summer learns to become a better all-around coach, not just be a guru on defense, but learn more about the offense, just increase his football knowledge, you can never stop learning and Rex has a great football IQ He needs to still build the defense, not just around Sanchez
I thought Pool did a great job the 3 games. It's tough to judge a safety by anything other then bad plays and I rarely saw him make a bad play. We saw him playing man at times, playing deep safety, playing more of a robber in a zone. He's good against the run, he's a good tackler. I thought he was horrible early in the year, I don't know if he just wasn't fitting into the system. I would be very happy with another year of Pool, Leonhard and Smith. I know people disagree.
I can't see David Harris not getting re-signed. Either Holmes or Edwards will be gone, and I have a feeling it will be Holmes.
Yeah, Pace can't really be cut before 2012. It's a $2 million net cap hit if he gets cut this offseason, nor should he be. Thomas COULD be cut technically, but that places an awful lot of stress on a rookie OLB.
Good, you draft a QB with the #5 spot and he plays good enough to get you within an eyelash of 2 SBs. If he truly is your franchise you need to keep him surrounded with good players.
...or a free agent...Antwan Barnes is available again. Rex Ryan coached him in Baltimore. He's never been a starter in this league, so he might come in cheap.
OLB and 3-4 de's I agree is a definite need. I feel that Shaun Ellis done. We keep DeVito who can fill a spot and maybe grab Cullen Jenkins in free agency if dollars allow? if Pitoatua can rehab through the injury I think he has an upside At OLB Thomas is also probably done. He's slowed down through this season although he remained servicable. Pace just seems meaner and has been slowed down this year by the injury ILBs I hadn't considered letting Harris go because of the cost element and whilst this would be a sore one it may be worth considering. What's the opinion on giving Satele or Mauga an opportunity to develop and share a spot whilst we groom a rookie? Woodys replacement keep Wayne Hunter and bring in a journeyman swing player to push at Vlad to step up? QBs Keep Clemens as a back up and toss Brunell on the heap he's done his job and look for a rookie prospect to make the back up Safetys. Lose Pool Keep Leonhard, E Smith and hope Lowery comes on in stride. Play Smith as a strong safety in running and short intermediate passing type situations I think we lose B Smith to $s I want to keep Santonio and Braylon but #10 is my first wish Cromartie we keep on a short contract whilst K Wilson hopefully gets the fire back I can't comment on draft class as I have no knowledge of NCAA and some will say of the Jets after this post
