Just noticed 2 coincidences between this Sunday's game and the 1982 AFC Championship Game (aka, the MudBowl).

Both games will be played on Sunday, January 23rd and both will feature a Jets team that was seeded 6th and ran the top of the bracket in this order (3,1,2). The 6th seeded Jets beat Cincy (3), and the Raiders (1) on the road, before traveling to Miami (2).

Choosing to believe that this means redemption for us instead of the opposite. Unlike that strike-shortened season, the Jets lost both games to the Dolphins before falling again in the playoffs. We, of course, defeated the Steelers last month.

On the 28th anniversary of the Mud Bowl, the Jets finally move on.

How is this a reach? Obviously the stat holds no weight but it isn't that much of a reach to notice that they played the same seeds in the playoffs.

I think last year had more coincidences.

'82 we beat Cincy in 1st rd
'09 we beat Cincy in 1st rd

'82 we went out west in the 2nd rd and beat the raiders 17-14
'09 we went out west in the 2nd rd and beat SD 17-14

'82 we lost the title game w/ a bad 2nd half
'09 we lost the title game w/ a bad 2nd half

Did you know that when the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2005/6 postseason went to the Super Bowl, that they were a 6 seed and played Cincy (3), Indy (1) and Denver (2) in order to advance? You will probably find that happens as often as not when a 6 seed makes it to the conference game.

Since a 6 seed must play a 3 and then a 1 to get the conference championship game, and a 2 is the best of the remaining teams, without even checking you would have to think this is correct. But identifying spooky coincidences is so much more fun, isn't it?

I hate to burst the bubble here but in 1982, there were no 6 seeds...I think only 5 made it to the playoffs...and who wants to compare anything to 1982, we lost that game!!

    1983, 2011. Both have a 1.

    8 + 3... equals 11

In the strike shortened 1982 season the NFL went to an 8-team playoff format for each conference because there were only nine regular season games. Had it been a normal season there would have only been five seeds, as you said.

I think this is our best chance since 1982. Both in 1998 and last year we faced what seemed to be a huge wall to scale in the AFCCG, not so much this time.

I think we had a great chance in 1998 but we literally fumbled away our chances. I still think we were the better team.

I still think that was the best Jets team I've seen, but Denver was defending champs and started the year 13-0, similar to the Colts starting 14-0 last year. Granted we were hotter at the time, bit Denver still seemed more daunting. I thought we had a good chance vs Miami but had no idea what the weather was going to be and the impact it would have, plus the Redskins may have beaten us in the Super Bowl.
