Well, at least there are now two people on this board who know that Belichick did not suck in Cleveland.
Sorry, your memory is faulty. Parcells was hired as a consultant for the 1st year and BB was the HC. After that, Parcells was the HC. It was all a sham to get around the contract restriction.
Wrong...Parcells had already told his close associates he wasn't coaching in 2000. Will McDonough broke the story in The Boston Globe on December 17, 1999. I remember as I was in Boston that week for business.
And if Carlos Beltran had connected with Wainright's changeup in 2006, it's possible the Mets would have won 4 World Series by now, just like Torre's Yankees......
Parcells considered himself fired/removed by Kraft once Kraft reneged on his written deal with the previous owner as far as personnel....remember the 'groceries' line ???
I recall the situation, but your recollection is not quite accurate - is it your position is that you think BB was the HC of the NYJ in 1997 and that BP was a consultant?
That is correct. Belichicken was technically head coach of the Jets for a very short time in the summer of 1997. The Jets hired him as HC for one year and BP was to be a consultant until 1998 until such time as his contract with the Patriots expired. Then in 1998 he would become HC and Belichicken would have stepped down and become A/C - DC in 1998. The league stepped in an brokered the settlement that released BP from his contract and allowed him to immediately coach the Jets in exchange for draft pick compensation.
belichick is a cheater, his lack of integrity would not have been tolerated in this franchise. that is all. Belichick knew that beforehand and took his talent up to scrupouless, historyless new england.
I made a correction to your second sentence there. Parcells was allowed to coach the team in 1997 in exchange for three draft picks. He was certainly the Jets head coach by the summer of 1997. Jets draft picks awarded to the Patriots for compensation- 1997 3rd round- Patriots selected RB Sedrick Shaw 1997 4th round- Patriots selected G Damon Denson 1998 2nd round- Patriots selected WR Tony Simmons 1999 1st round- Patriots selected LB Andy Katzenmoyer The Jets also had to send two draft picks to the Patriots for the Curtis Martin signing in early 1998. 1998 1st round- Patriots selected RB Robert Edwards 1998 3rd round- Patriots selected RB Chris Floyd
It is an interesting part of jet history, even though it was a bad history in terms of what he did. Not sure why some tried to turn this into a trash talking festival.

Are you trying to insinuate that the Jets were not active participants in Parcells' defection from the Patriots? There are phone records from Parcells' hotel room during Super Bowl week that show he was communicating back and forth with the NYJ. How can you say they "they didn't return the favor because they knew it was tampering" with a straight face. They had a deal done before the Super Bowl that's why Parcells didn't even travel back with the team after the loss. So you trying to paint the Jets as innocent in Parcells' defection is laughable. If he considered himself "fired/removed" why did he continue to coach the team for a full season after they drafted Terry Glenn? He should have quit on draft day. He couldn't because he was legally bound to the team and that's why the Jets had to surrender 4 draft picks to the Patriots in spite of Parcells' attempts to circumvent his contract to the Patriots. Again, Karma
It's not only my recollection, it's a fact. Tagliabue forced the Jets to pay compensation to get Parcells totally free because he wouldn't have been able to force Parcells not to be a consultant for 1 year. Kraft violated Parcells contract when he removed the personnel function and while Parcells couldn't COACH in 1997, he was free to work for another club in another capacity. Will McDonough posted the details of the contract in his Globe column right after the Pats lost the Super Bowl.
This is actually somewhat correct. BB was made HC the day before he resigned the position. He did not agree to be HC. He was made HC because under the NFL rules, the Patriots could not talk to him if he was a HC but could if he was in any other position then HC. The Jets organization(Parcells on his way out) made him HC for the sole purpose to make the Patriots unable to talk to him, thus the reason the Pats gave up a #1 draft pick to the Jets for him. Those are all facts - look it up if you don't believe me.
Again.....I don't know where some of you get your facts, but this is 100% total BS. It's Patriots and Boston media spin which has been thoroughly debunked by those in the know, including the late Will McDonough of The Boston Globe who was in position to know. Yes, Parcells reached out to the Jets. He called the janitors room. He called the ticket office. Parcells knew his phone calls were being checked -- he called from the hotel, for gods sake. But he never reached any decision-makers. His agent finally did reach Steve Gutman. Gutman, a lawyer familiar with NFL bylaws, totally blew away the agent saying the Jets could not speak or tamper with any coach or player under contract. Gutman lived 12 blocks away from the NFL offices on Park Avenue -- he could walk there and ask about any situation he wasn't sure about. He didn't need to on this one. Will McDonough was on top of the story from the beginning in The Boston Globe. He knew Parcells for decades and was The Axe for anything on Parcells. Parcells reached out to the Jets initially to throw a scare into Kraft in an attempt to get him to back off. When Kraft insisted on separating the HC and Personnel Departments, Parcells wanted out as per his contract. Parcells was stripped of his personnel decisionmaking in the summer/fall of 1996. He was livid and Will McDonough wrote about this repeatedly in The Boston Globe. Kraft was furious and the Pats tried to restrict access to both the Globe's beat writer and McDonough. They backed off because McDonough had decades of credibility in the Boston media, regardless of who was right in Kraft vs. Parcells. Parcells wanted to work things out. When it became apparent that Kraft wanted his man running the draft/personnel, it was over. Do you recall Parcells line: "They want you to cook the meal but they won't let you buy the groceries." ? That sums it up right there. You think Parcells wanted to leave a Super Bowl team with a great QB like Bledsoe and a RB Curtis Martin for a 1-15 team like the Jets ????????? Come on......
You're not 'wrong' here on the facts, but your timing is off. Again.....Parcells had decided to step-down in early-to-mid December. It wasn't a ploy to prevent the Pats from talking to Belichick. Belichick wasn't a certainty with the Pats. Jonathan Kraft didn't want him. Neither did the Pats other high-ranking execs. Bob Kraft did, but it was unclear if they would have signed him if he just interviewed for the job along with others. Once the Jets elevated him, and BB let them know he wanted them over the Jets, Kraft Sr. moved on in. I hate to beat a dead horse, but Will McDonough nailed this in 1999-2000. He is the only person to really know, besides Parcells, more so than Belichick or Kraft.
