Why did Belichick leave the Jets HC job the way he did?

He was tired of living in Parcells shadow.

 

He was a cheating double talking bastard that was always more than happy to take a 7 figure salary as DC subject to his agreement w/Mr. Hess that he would become the HC. BB was by far the highest paid DC in the NFL - because he had an agreement to become HC when Parcells stepped down. BB readily accepted the paychecks but when it came time for him to live up to his end of the bargain - he renegged on Mr. Hess.

That is BB.

 

Very simple, Belichick had been in Parcells shadow for years and wanted no more of him.
Parcells had step down as coach but was giving another title and Belichick didn't want him interfering with his coaching.

If Parcells had gotten his fat butt out of town which he did a year later anyways, we would have Belichick as coach today.

 

He made sure to take the million dollars he took from a dying Leon Hess before he headed to Foxboro.

 

BULLSHIT. that is the excuse that BB supporters use. Its total BS. BB agreed to be the HC knowing that Parcells would continue to have an executive role in the organization. BB had no qualms about being paid 7 figures pursuant to his agreement w/Mr. Hess to be the HC in waiting.

What happened was that Bob Kraft offered him more $$$ and complete control and so he better dealed Mr. Hess and basically said F.U. to his word, his agreement and the Jets. That is quintessentially BB - a narcissistic opportunist who doesn't mind cheating, breaking his word, throwing people under the bus and manipulating everything to his own personal advantage - He is brilliant, evil and manipulative. This is why he was never trusted w/in the Giants organization that he grew up in. Everybody knew he was brilliant - but his character flaws were also known and he was not trusted.

We would have never won a SB with Belly to begin wit. A) We wouldn't of drafted Brady & B) He wouldn't have been blessed with players that Parcells drafted such as Bruschi, Vrabel?, Law, Milloy, McGinest, Johnson etc, etc on D.

Just go back & look at his days with the Browns. He had more than enough time to turn that franchise around, but couldn't. He was a career loser as a head coach with Cleveland. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe he was the Browns head coach for 5 years. Only had 1 winning season/playoff apperance; & his team didn't get far in the playoffs. He also had a losing record his 1st year with a really good NE team with Drew Bledsoe under center. It wasn't until the Jets hurt Drew during his 2nd year, *Brady* got in...& thats when out of no where, *BB* becomes a "winner".

Rex is the real defensive guru. Rex is off to a much better start to his coaching career; much better. Took us to an AFC C-G during his 1st year with a rookie QB, & turned a middle of the pack D into the #1 D.

Belichick didn't get along with Steve Gutman - although he was willing to take the Jets' money to be Parcells' successor. When Belichick screwed over the Jets, Gutman fired back and made some unflattering comments.

I think in part because Belichick has an obsessive personality, from that point on, he loathed the Jets with all his heart. I'm not sure he has the social skills to actually get over anything. He seems incapable of some basic human traits, and I think that is in part indicative of his nature. The guy is essentially a football savant. He lacks social skills, and pretty much spends all his time in his office planning to get back at everyone he has perceived wronged him. This comes at the expense of his family, as his ex-wife would likely attest to.

Remember this...Bill Belichick was TWICE named HC of the NYJ, and didn't coach a single practice. The first time was when the Jets were trying to get Parcells. The Pats were unwilling to part with Parcells without some compensation, so the Jets named him head of football operations, with Belichick the official head coach (Parcells, of course, being the de facto HC). The second time is the infamous napkin incident, which prompted the Gutman bashing and the bulk of the hatred.

 

It is quite simple why Beli left. The Jets future looked very bad. Because of Salary cap problems the Jets lacked the ability to resign many of their own players and sign additional talent for the next 5+ years. They had an aging team that was in serious salary cap trouble. The bill came due in 2002 when we had to get rid of Coleman, Glenn, and and Ryan Young to get under the $28 million dollar salary cap deficit. Mostly the Jets had to defer that money out into later years. The Jets did not really become solvent or recover that salary cap problem until the new CBA in 2006. We lost lots of other players along the way like Randy Thomas, McKenzie, Coles, and Jordan because we did not have the money to sign them because of the salary cap problems that began before Belichicken quit.

There were additional reason such as a new owner, and standing inParcells shadow but the overwhelming reason was the Jets future looked so bleak because of the overspending during the Parcells era. The problem with such a huge salary cap deficit is it does not go away in one year it gets pushed forward each year by extending contracts and pushing money forward. Something that requires 5-10 years to fix. The Jets unlike most teams were very fortunate to transition so well during this period. The Jets FO and scouting department deserves a great deal of credit.
