With Newton officially declaring, along with Gabbert and Mallett, I thought this would be an interesting discussion to have. I've seen dissenting opinions on each of the above guys, with different people ranking them in different orders. It'll be interesting to see if any of these guys has a great combine/workouts and is able to establish himself as THE elite QB in this draft and put himself into consideration for #1 overall. QBs are listed in alphabetical order, and made votes public to try to incite discussion.
Well, the NFL hasn't had a completely shitty QB class is a while. I think this one will make us proud.
But in all seriousness, I think Gabbert is the most NFL ready QB in the draft right now which isn't saying much.
I would take Ryan Mallett in a heartbeat, ]the kid reminds me of Cutler. Can stand in and make every damn throw, he just needs to learn how to use touch on the short throws more often. Doing what he did in the SEC proved alot.
All are works in progress, abeit to different degrees, so I'll take the one with the most potential, but also one of the biggest risks. Cam Newton
You're right, Cutler and Mallett make a lot of bonehead decisions. Bring your team to the brink of victory and throw a terrible pass....typical Mallett.
Newton. He has the size, the arm strength, good accuracy, and he wins. Thats a big deal. Lots of love for Gabbert on the draft sites latelty but I think I'd have him 3rd at best behind Newton and Mallett. Locker seems to have pissed away Millions by not comming out last year.
Maybe I'm just being super critical, but most of the "great throws" Cam made were either blown coverages or the DB's making bad plays on the ball. He has great size and arm strength, but then again, so did Jamarcus Russell
Looking at the list I wondered.. "I have to pick one of THESE guys?" Don't think any of them will succeed in the NFL honestly. I guess Gabbert if someone held a gun to my head and made me pick.
Not that I think he's the best prospect out there but I really like Andy Dalton (TCU). I think he'll be taken in the 2nd/3rd round and will develop in a capable starter down the road... Out of these guys idk... I'll have an opinion further down the road in the draft process... PS I really hope they do the Gruden segment like they did last year with Bradford, Clausen, McCoy and Tebow.
How did Jake Locker go from one of the biggest prospect in years into maybe the 3rd or 4th taken in this year's "weak" draft...?
Cam Newton by far its not even close, he is the best run first QB that has come out in a long time. His mechanics are not bad compared to guys like Tebow or Young. He definitely needs time to learn the pro system but he is a great prospect. He is so much more accurate than Vick, Young, and Tebow when they came out. I think somebody on here has said before, but he really is a Ben Roethlisberger clone. I also agree with Mambo that Dalton is a guy to keep in mind a couple years down the road.
Not that I claim to be an expert, but I feel like of those guys, its gotta be Cam Newton. However Cam needs the Carson Palmer treatment imo in order to succeed. If he gets thrown in ala ryan/flacco/sanchez/bradford I don't think he can hack it. He needs time to learn and get polished, if he is fed to the wolves i don't think things will work out properly.
I'm having a lot of trouble buying into the Cammy Cam hype. He does a bunch of things pretty well but I can't see him polishing his game into franchise QB level. In college he was always a threat to run but I don't think he has the speed and elusiveness to damage pro teams. I guess that's where the Roethlisberger comparisons come in. He'll definitely slip a bunch of sacks but I fear he'll take a beating if he takes off and tries to get first downs on his feet. His accuracy is decent but inconsistent it seems. I've seen him squeeze some passes into tight coverage in a few games this year. At other times he'll overthrow a wide open receiver in the flats or skip a ball into his checkdown guy. He'd probably work well on bootlegs and option/play-action but as a pocket-passer there's something left to be desired. This is a shot in the dark but he doesn't come off as the brightest, most hard-working guy. To be an elite quarterback takes a lot of preparation and study. Some people have the drive, some don't. This is just me speculating but I'm not sure Cam is the type of guy that will kill hours in the film room.
After reading your post, I honestly have to ask you this: have you seen him play? I believe your entire argument is based on one game: the national championship game. I was going to point out a lot of different things that I disagreed with, but I'll just talk about this one. Newton is very fast for a guy his size. He's an amazing athlete. Watch this play and tell me he's not fast or elusive enough: ...that's Patrick Peterson that he burns at the end of that run. FTR - He's one of the biggest boom or bust prospects in a long time. I think he has the potential to be a great quarterback.
I think that's a big misconception about Cam, everyone wants to compare his work ethic to JaWalrus or VY, but there's nothing out there that really justifies that, including the off the field stuff. I think he's smarter than he lets on, sly describes him well. Wouldn't surprise me if scouts gush over him at the Combine interviews, he's got politicial speak to go along with that politician smile. He's like a QB version of Obama. Is he Peyton Manning? No, but few are..
