I'm wondering if Belichick didn't do Rex a favor by leaving his starters in that 45-3 game and pulling out the kitchen sink that night. Yes, it was a big game at the time and he wanted to really finish the Jets off, but now Rex has 11 days worth of their best preparation and execution all on film. It's not the same as seeing them again in Week 2 next year, these are the same two teams six weeks later on the same field. Conversely, as great as Belichick and Brady are, how do the Pats in general not approach this game thinking they have it in the bag? I would say any "bulletin board material" or whatever means nothing this week because it pales in comparison to what happened in that game. Are the Pats better off not even looking at that film? And how much can they come up with that Rex and his staff don't already have on the film? In my opinion it's two excellent coaches squaring off for the fifth time in two seasons, Belichick has Brady, Rex has that 45-3 game to use for film study and motivation.
The Jets need no motivation for the pats this week. One thing they do need is a QB who shows up ready to play for 60 minutes.
Yes...he did do us a favor. The entire roster was embarrassed....and apparently, the Pats (especially Tom Brady) did a ton of chirping in the 4th quarter of that beatdown. I expect the Jets (and the coaching staff) to put in 110% effort next Sunday......
It's tempting to say motivation is not needed, and certainly there is plenty of motivation presumably at work among Jet players considering hatred of the Pats, their leaving in their starters, that sort of thing. But if I were HC of the Jets, I would also be concerned that the players believe they can win this game. Believe, not just entertain the thought as a theoretical possibility, the any given Sunday stuff. Believe. That will be a challenge, I think.
I agree with this, to be clear I'm talking more about the tactical aspect than the motivational. Two games from the Super Bowl, motivation shouldn't be an issue even if you haven't played the other team before. Rex being a defensive strategist, he's got a boatload of film from that game featuring New England's starters that wouldn't be there if Belichick hadn't gone full blast the whole time. I believe Belichick thought that game would send the Jets packing for the year, now Rex has a lot of good film to work with--remember both teams had 11 days to prepage for that game, too.
I can picture a fumble, Tom at the bottom of the pile and bam, some dick ripping going on. Tom doesn't need it anyway.
In short... no, not at all. Any 45-3 game isn't about game-planning. It's about execution. I'm sure Belichick isn't sitting in his office right now saying, "Oh shit! I screwed up man. I should have held out a play or two." Most NFL teams' playbooks are thick enough to play three games against the same team and still show different looks. Of course there's a set of "go-to plays" that you'll always see in every game, but you guys are talking about Belichick like he's Norv Turner or something. He knows his team won the last one in a landslide, and that he can't go back to a lot of that stuff.
Talking doesn't win, what they did could help us focus a little better during the week but all that matters is if our team(specifically our D) shows up and plays like they are capable of come Sunday afternoon. We have the talent and coaching to win, let's see our guys go prove it.
Norv Turner would never have beaten us like that. I'm giving Belichick his props, not saying he messed up--nobody by the second half of that game had the Jets pegged to be coming back to Foxboro in the divisional round, that's just what happened. Point being, Belichick knew the divsion/bye was riding on that game and had 11 days to prepare, so he brought out the best stuff he had to beat us. His players, namely Brady, said as much after the game. So does he have enough left now that Rex & Co won't be able to go to school on? That's the whole point of the thread.
Yes I am off... I'm sick as shit and stuck and work. If you must know my Grandmother died while my grandfather was in the hospital. So yeah, it was a very tough fucking weekend.
Since the second that game ended this was the game the Jets wanted. Even more so for the defense, Rex has them coached very well and are a prideful unit. There will be blood, and not just from Tom's vaj.
I don't think Belichick did them a favor. But the 45-3 whooping should be motivation enough for the Jets not to let it happen again. ats_suck:
I agree, and as a fan me too. Beating them on a sunny day at the Meadowlands next September would be nice but this is the only way to really avenge 45-3. The Jets had to first regroup, then get in the playoffs, then get by the Colts and Peyton, they've earned their way back to get this opportunity. As much as I hate Belichick I love the way he keeps the pedal down and has that killer instinct when he's ahead, the same way he and Parcells did when they were here, that's what you want. I truly think he felt at the end of that game that he had done in the Jets for the season, I really don't think he expected to earn the bye with that game to find the Jets back up there in the second round. Sorry about your grandparents, too.
Sorry to hear about your tough times. It's only for a short season. I agree with the poster that mentioned the jets needed solid QB play for 60 minutes. IMO, this game could come down to the play of Sanchez. I don't see another blow-out.
The Patriots clearly went all out. We have to fix all the problems. Id be shocked if the Patriots have another plan up their sleeve.
apparently its true, the Patriots did throw the kitchen sink @ the JETS that night. 19 different formations in the first half when you would normally do 4 or 6 if I heard correctly on ESPN.
While I don't think it did us any favors I did like Rex's response when asked if he would look at the game film or if there was anything to take away from it. His response was of course there is, we juts got drubbed there is lots of things to study as to why. I do agree with the thought that the Pats would send us into a tailspin and we would not recover to make the playoffs. This may have backfired on Belli because I think he is going to get the best out of the Jets on both O and D this week. The question I have is once the game got out of hand did the Jets just decide to stop showing the Pats anything they could have used against us in future meetings knowing we'd have to likley go through them to get to the SB? It was apparent what we did wasn't working so did they just say let's not show them anything new or something we think will work so why risk it being exposed? That being true on both O and D.
