No way that Woodley leaves the Steelers and no way the jets have the cap room to sign him. A few thoughts: 1) I doubt the Jets are going to be able to keep Cromartie. No way they pay Cromartie and Revis. You just can't have that much money tied up at one position especially when they just used a 1st round pick on Kyle Wilson. I know everyone wants to trash Kyle but really he's a rookie from Boise State trying to play in the Rex Ryan defense which puts most of the stress on the corners. It's not like Kyle is playing in New England where the Pats almost always play cover 2 or cover 3. From week one your expected to play man to man against NFL WR's with either one safety playing deep or cover zero. 2) Braylon has become a very good overall WR. He catches almost every ball and he seems to give 100% on every play. He's probably one of the better blocking WR's in the game. He rarely fumbles, he seems to able to run every route and he's 6'3" 214 pounds. Maybe it's just me but when Sanchez gets into a groove it seems like he's throwing to Braylon and keller more then anyone else. I certainly hope he grows up a bit with the drinking. I read an article in the ny post that he was taking limo's to bars instead of driving. I would prefer that he was home studying the playbook but I guess it's an improvement. Braylon is 27. 3) Santonio is a rare athlete. He makes the amazing play but he also sometimes drives you crazy. The two fumbles, one against the broncos and the other against the Bears should never happen to a player of his stature. He will make the most difficult catch and then drop a touchdown against the dolfags. I have seen him not give 100% on running plays. Not all the time but I have seen it. Against the Dolphins on the first Sanchez interception he was running his route at less then 100%. He may have been a decoy but it bothered me. You also have a guy that won a superbowl and the Steelers were basically giving away. For all we know about him this year he's not a bad guy. I do know he has been out in the city partying and taking limo's. Again, I would hope one of these guys has figured out that during the season they should be at home. You can't fault a guy for enjoying the night life but both of these guys have track records that say they should not be at a bar drinking. Santonio is 26. I don't know what they will do as far which one they prefer to bring back. I think either of them in a pass happy offense would be pro bowlers. If the Jets plan to continue to be a run heavy offense then Braylon may be the right choice. Santonio is certainly a risky choice due to the possibility of a one year suspension or worse.
Considering the 2011 cap number hasn't been made public yet....care to share where you got the idea the Jets won't have the cap space?
Obviously the cap isn't set, but from what I've read both sides want a cap. The players association wants a cap so that their is a floor in how much the owners have to spend. According to http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary11.html The Jets have $110 million already on the cap for 2011. Now I would assume that Tannenbaum will knock that number down by either releasing players or restructuring contracts. If they release Woody, Jenkins, Thomas, Tomlinson and Taylor that would take $17 million off their cap for 2011. Now when you consider that Harris, Cromatie, Edwards, Holmes, Brad Smith, Eric Smith, Weatherford, Ellis, Pool and Hunter among others may be free agents depending on the language of the new CBA. Unless the NFL has no salary cap which neither side seems to want the Jets biggest concern this off season will be keeping their own players. it doesn't help that they gave up a 2nd or 3rd round pick for most likely a one year rental of Cromatie. The Jets are extremely top heavy right now and they need to change that by building through the draft. Keep in mind that in Tannenbaum's 5 drafts he has only drafted 9 defensive players.
If we manage to get LaMarr Woodley I wouldnt mind losing Cromartie. I wish we would have kept Vilma. I love Bart Scott as much as the next guy, but he is overpaid and getting older. And we would have more cap space in there to make it more likely that we keep Edwards-Holmes
I would pick Holmes because he is better at making big plays, and I have more confidence in him to get open and to get big yardage. Edwards has had a great season, but he has off-field troubles, and he still is known for having stone hands.
I understand what you're saying...but regarding the salary cap, all we can do is make assumptions till the NFL releases concrete salary cap info for 2011. There could be an increase....nobody knows yet. But to say we can't fit Woodley under the 2011 salary cap is a tad pre-mature.
I agree from a factual stand point to say he won't fit is wrong since it's an unknown at this point. I was more saying that it would be extremely difficult.
Wasn't it brought up that statistically speaking, he actually does not drop the ball all that much in comparison to many others in the nfl?
Great point - the Jets shouldn't resign Edwards because of a reputation he developed in 2008, while playing for another team.
Holmes. He plays more aggressive and drops less passes. As far as keeping them both, it would be nice, but you don't need two big time, big $ receivers to have a kick-@ss passing game. Ask the patriots?
We're not the patriots. Sanchez needs as many offensive weapons as possible. And until he turns into Brady(never), we need to get him as much help as possible.
