17 to the Steelers and 9 to the Packers would lead someone to the conclusion that the scheme can still be plenty effective when the players are executing it well. Oh and 14 to the Pats in the first go around too.
What about 9 by the Packers? Pats game- Eric Smith's first game as defensive QB, awful coverage. Miami, (I know they aren't the Pats just saying) held to 10 points and barely a hundred total yards. Eric Smith being out is a big deal for this defense right now.
My beef with the "talking heads" was that the scheme is 10 years out dated. That's simply not true based on what has happened in the past 10 years. I think Rex absolutely takes some of the blame for not coming up with effective new schemes. Part of me is holding onto hope that he's holding things for the playoffs - he's said a few times that everything they do is based on playing there best in January. Clearly the personnel is having a hard time shedding blocks to create pressure though. It's not all on Rex.
If refocusing worked for the offense, I think it will work for the defense as well. Let's face it, fundamentals include making sure you know where to be in what package, preventing short man situations on the field. Fundamentals also include looking back on the qb/ball while in in coverage, as to prevent the lame face guarding type of plays that plagued us against the Bears. And then fundamentals also cover how you fight off blocks on the line of scrimmage, or wrap when you tackle. Focusing on the little things can go a long way in preventing a small snowball from rolling downhill and becoming an avalanche.
that " defense" gives up tons of yards and points. you let a playoff qb get 5 seconds to pass and you'll very soon be joining the fans watching the playoffs on tv. memo to rex: 3-man rush does not work!
From the BEARS gamethread: Not like we haven't been noticing.... Sad part is that the CS waits til they get 100+yds rushing to do sumfin bout it....
The Jets allowed their first 100 yard rusher since we played Jacksonville last season. I'd have to say that for the majority of this season, they have been pretty solid in those fundamentals. Having bad tackling game is a nice wake-up call and a nice reason to put some pads to to get the guys ready to hit in the postseason. But let's not pretend that Rex Ryan was a year late to diagnose an epidemic.
Mendenhall had 99 yards...rush defense has been horrendous without Leonhard, except for the Dolphins game. Is there correlation here?
With all of the ripping on this defense, they're still 4th in ypg and 11th in ppg. Things could be a lot worse...... The problem is we've seen both our offense and defense go into periods of great dominance and utter failure during this season, which makes you wonder which versions show up in the offs.....
That's where I'd look first. The defensive adjustments on the field have been severely lacking since Leonhard got injured. Having Lowery over Knox in the slot after the fake punt failed was almost as egregious as the fake punt itself.
Scheme or personnel...we ain't gettin' it done. We got a better shot at just trying to outscore opponents at this point. Air Ryan anyone? Then again, it didn't work against da Bears
Why can't Jenkins play? With his size, what does he need his knees for? Can't they just put a bunch of padding around it or inject it with some kind of pain-killer like they do in football movies? The guy is a slacker. I saw him on TV the other day and he was walking fine. Fat jerk.
They could surgically replace Jenkins' legs with Danny Woodhead and Julian Edelman and he would be the fastest defensive tackle in the history of the NFL.
Ah I believe the Pack game was before Leonard's injury. As for the Steeler game they decided to play conservative grind it out FB which plays right into RR hand. If JT did not produce that safety they would have tied the score & quite possibility we would have lost that game. You do remember that last Steeler drive how easily they whicked down the field. MHO if we got to go back to Indy it will just be a rewind of last years game except they will have some journeyman instead of Collie killing us. As I said all off season without pressure when it comes to PO time that weakness will destroy us in our thrust to get to the big dance. :jets:
Once Leonhard went down and Eric Smith got accustomed to his new role the defense looked great against Miami. When we have him back you'll see a huge improvement in our coverage. That responsibility fell to Pool who has just not been in this defense long enough to call the coverages. Why do you think we saw so many mismatches against the Bears, and guys running around last minute?
Byz, our tackling has been pathetic all year....it's not the 1st game where this has happened. My point was that we've been getting away with it and now that we get run on 2 weeks in a row it's being "addressed".
