Teams figured out the problems with the pass rush and aren't afraid of the complex blitzes anymore when all they have to do is add extra pass protection and the pass rush halts to a stop. I'm not saying this is not on the coaching staff, but this defense is as good as it can be at this point, we need young blood that fits in a 3-4 front seven, lots of it and badly.
I'm not sure this is true. Football is a brutal game and guys like Scott, Thomas, Ellis and Pace seem a lot less explosive than they were a year ago, which is to be expected because they're all 30 or so, and front seven players often slow down at that age.
Prior to this game we held Pittsburgh to 17 points, they have a very similar offense to Chicago. One of the key differences was the field, players were slipping all over place. In that situation the offense has the advantage since the defense has to play reactive to what they're doing. Again don't underestimate the loss of Eric Smith, with Pool calling the coverages you can still see some confusion and players running around last minute. We had 10 men on the field on one of the TDs. Eric Smith after a week of adjustment vs the Pats played the role very well against Miami.
you sound like jets need stars and pro bowlers at all the positions to be good. Rex's defense was better last year with a very similar group of people. The opposition learned to defend the exotic blitz packages this year. The Rex needs to adjust. I blame Rex for not adjusting.
I'm a Rex apologist because I love his coaching style and he brought an identity to this team like no one before him, so I know my opinion is skewed a bit. However, he has made some mistakes but its only his 2nd years as an HC, much like this is Sanchez 2nd year. Both will improve with time & experience. However, we are definitely lacking the personnel. As much as I could not stand Rhodes' Hollywood mantra and lack of hitting, he was awesome at coverage. Smith, Leonhard, & Pool hit harder but lack the coverage. The Jets are super thin at Safety and I can only hope Lowery develops as a good to great safety. As for the font 7, Ropati was a big cog in the rotation last year. When Big Jenks went down, Ropati, DeVito, & Pouha did a great job filling in on the line next to Ellis. Ropati is out along with Jenks and so our rotation dropped off a bit. Kroul isn't there yet so we are a man down on the DLine from a rotational aspect as well. Pryce's absence is having an affect and I think losing Howard Green was a mistake. Honorable mention to Marques Douglas. Wilson has been a disappointment but he will definitely get better. He has the speed to keep up with the #1's he just hasn't gotten his head around yet to track the ball. Once he gets over that hump, he will be a very good corner. I have faith coach DT can bring him around. A quick note on the O - This O can be really good. I think another off-season together would really improve the chemistry. I know its gonna be really tough but I want to see Edwards and Holmes retained. LT isn't the running back he used to be but as a pass catching RB, I don't think anyone else is better. Keeping the faith in Tanny.
The reward is also there, even more so, when playing good sound football. That wasn't good, sound football. It was horseshit.
How exactly has Wilson been a disappointment? He is being asked to play in the nickel in a blitzing D, so he's not always playing zone like a lot of nickelbacks do. Instead, he's a rookie corner playing primarily man coverage in the slot against NFL receivers or TEs who are much bigger than him. The guys he covers have a 2-way go on almost every play because Wilson has no sideline to use. He should have been given a few more chances to play corner on the outside...like a pre-snap banjo call when the other team's top wideout lines up inside...Wilson and Revis or Wilson and Cromartie make the call at the line. Either way I am sure there's a lot in practice and meetings that is influencing the decision to limit his playing time....but he has been put in a lot of tough spots this year.
Probably because he's the last CB on the depth chart behind such talents as Drew Coleman and Marqious Cole.
cut a santonio- deal and bring in haynesworth from the skins. play him at end. ellis may be leaving, and jenkins spend more time injured than on the field. didn't we get rid of abraham for that very same reason? hmy:
exactly! the only relevant defensive stat is points allowed. the pats defense is supposedly worse than ours, yet they gave up fewer points against bears, us, and teams like miami and buffalo.
The stats won't be complete until after tonight. Last year we only allowed 14.8 a game. What skewed it so much this year is the 45 to NE, 38 to Chicago, and the 27 to Houston.
