I know we are all dissapointed with the D this year, especially after yesterday. I hear alot of people blaming Rex and Pettine for why the defense hasnt lived up to the hype. Fact is the Jets just dont have the personnel to be an elite defense. Jets are a good defensive team and are a few pieces away from being great. But, we dont have a pass rusher obviously. This should have been addressed in the draft in April. And after Revis and Cromartie our secondary is weak. Wilson has been a big dissapointment so far. The safety position is weak, even with Leonard. If we get a pass rusher and a playmaking safety this D will be great. The expectations were too high after being number 1 last year.
Can I still blame Rex for being a shitty head coach? Can i still blame him for going for it on 4th and 3 from his own 40 when he had a 7 pt lead? Cause I gotta say, that's pretty goddamn stupid.
There is blame enough to go around and Ryan and Petine share some of it. I've said this in other threads, why is J Taylor in pass coverage twenty yards deep when the pass rush sucks? Is having 10 or 12 men on the field all on the players? Happens way too often. We almost lost the PIT game because we only rushed 3 on that last drive. Sorry, Rex doesn't get off the hook that easilly.
If Rex doesn't get any blame for the defense, then why should he get so much credit when the D played so great last year? Unfortunately, it goes both ways. Rex has to take some blame for the defense playing poorly.. or not up to their standard anyway.
You gotta be kidding me. Because two playoff appearances in his two years as a HC is shitty right? Or going to the AFC championship game as a rookie HC with a rookie QB is also shitty huh? God damn how much do you want from the guy? One rough week and everyone wants his head. I'll say, it sure would've helped against Chicago's if Taylor, Pace or Thomas could shed a fucking block. Or if Coleman or Lowery decide to look for the ball that Cutler throws up for grabs.
Sometimes he coaches like he is Bellicheat... Needs to get some common sense though, does tend to take too big of a risk sometimes... Isn't he a defense minded coach? He should get some blame...38 points against Cutler...Yikes.
The team has performed well in the past two years as a whole, but when given the chance time and again Rex has performed terribly in making decisions. There is no way in hell any sane head coach would go for it on 4th and 3 from his own 40 with a touchdown lead. Sorry, that kind of lack of judgment by Rex is a huge red flag for me that I will not soon forget.
Im not saying Rex deserves no blame, but its on the players. Not being able to make a freaking tackle is on the players. Jets D has one great player in Revis and alot of good players. Harris is very good, I wouldnt say hes great. Like I said we are a couple players away.
Rex said from the beginning that this defence would be his and that he would be in charge of it. When it works he gets the praise so when it fails he gets the blame. Simple as that. Rex also gets a lot of input on the personnel and was a huge part of bringing in Jason Taylor. He's ultimately accountable for how this defnce looks and plays.
Here's my thought on the fake punt: Rex had momentum, but he and Westy felt that they had a shot of putting this game away in terms of the mental/emotional battle and score if the fake punt worked and they were going to march down the field and make it a 14 pt game. I admire the aggressive mentality and the want to put the game away right there, but it is the wrong move. In a game like that where your team was winning the field position game and Weatherford is punting extremely well, you don't make decisions like those. Hopefully its a learning experience.
IMO this 4th and 3 fake punt call is getting blown way out of proportion. Rex made the call and the call worked, but the players didn't execute. Yea it was a risk but the fact of the matter is the play worked. I like the aggresiveness and if brad smith catches a ball thrown right in his hands, the drive continues and the jets could be up by two scores. It's a risk but the reward was there. Especially when the other option is to punt out of bounds, or to Hester, both of which would probably give the Bears a short field. Coaches coach and players play. At some point the blame needs to be put on the players not executing
My gut says Sanchez, and it makes me sad. They should be neck and neck. Fuck. But this team does have more glaring holes in terms of personnel on defense than it did last year. At the same time, this defense has become more lax in terms of not being able to count to 11, as Mack told us in his thread. They need more discipline and they need someone on that staff that will have people in the right place and have 11 players on the field...................... Mike Singletary for LB Coach!!!!!!!!!!
That's the other side of the coin for the whole season, but that also goes on the shoulders of the staff. Why are the players being consistently inconsistent? What is going on during the week that doesn't have everyone focused in the game? Why are the same mistakes happening time and time again? That's a coaching issue. But there are times where this receiving core wants to drop an easy game changing catch, or this defense wants to stop communicating and make amateur mistakes. It's mind blowing. Everyone is to blame for the shortcomings that weren't expected from a team loaded with talent.
