Well I caught the game late yesterday cause I got stupid drunk on Christmas night, anyway last night I read a lot about the defense sucking and the questionable botched fake punt. What I fail to understand though, was some of the offense bashing, which was coming mostly from newer posters. Now I understand the O shit the bed in the 4th quarter when it needed 7 the most, but the fact is this was one of our best offensive performances all season and against the Bears. Now the Bears are statistically #10 in defense but their run D is top 5 and we for the most part ran at will, now I caught the game in the 2nd quarter when we were up 21-10 and then we started losing which is when I thought to myself maybe I should go back to fucking bed and we can win, but I digress. From what I saw this offense moved the ball at will on this Bears defense, Sanchez looked great, Greene was great, Hunter was phenomenal, Edwards, Keller, Holmes, everyone except for LT was great today on offense, unfortunately we still lost because our D had an epic meltdown after jumping up 21-10. Now the point is I'd like to hear what you all think, if our defense held it together and we won this game I know we'd be hearing about this offense all day and night, we lost though and I heard nothing. I've been pretty numb toward the outcome of the games since we lost to NE, so I've been staying a bit calmer and got to thinking and I'm actually getting pretty happy. The playcalling has been consistent and the team has been executing, the Keller dropped TD pass and Holmes fumble were killers but still, this is looking very good. I know we have bigger issues with the D, but all year the talk has been of the inconsistent O and it's inability to perform against strong teams. This O has showed us today and even last week that it has the ability to beat good defenses, so for now and the future, are you guys confident? And what is the biggest factor to this O that needs to be consistent? Play calling? Execution? Penalties? (we only had three total today) Let's not be disgruntled over a tough loss, we are in the Playoffs and will continue to be there for years to come, how do you feel?
it was nice to see Smith finally "throw" out of the wildcat.....perhaps Schotty finally realized that you can't use the same game plan for every game. The offense has been clicking over the last couple of games....
Absolutely, I was completely caught off guard by how well Hunter played today as well as the entire O-line, they are looking nice again. Schotty has been calling play much better and he's been sticking with certain plays that are working, instead of constantly trying to do something different, I think most of Edwards catches were from the same exact play, over and over.
Maybe the Miami and Pats games were wake calls for them. Really like what I'm seeing and were generally good against the long ball but not yesterday. Also if Edwards kept running he could have caught the ball.
Helllooo?!?!?!? Short passing game. Something They should have fucking installed in the off season. I took shit for saying Mark would put it up 500 plus times. (Thanks ...he's over 500 now.) I ASSUMED, the OC would be smart enough to know that if that was indeed the case, you could not just go down the field all the time. In the last two weeks, Mark has been at a 65% completion rate. Had they gone this way from week one, we'd be 13-2 and looking at a one seed. (we'd have still lost yesterday, and I'll say NE but I'm not sure that's true.)
How weird would it be if we went to the AFCCG this year, with the offense as the key as opposed to the defense? that would be quite the twist... But we always knew the offense could do this, they just have failed to click so far. If the offense plays like it has the last couple games, we have a chance in the playoffs as long as our defense is mearly average. The key I believe anyways, is to give Sanchez easy passes to start the games, let him get in an early rythm and then turn and hand the ball to Greene and let him run people over. Then go back to the high percentage passes, and every now and then, give Sanchez a shot to gun it down the field. If it's not there, tell him to check it down to Greene/LT/ a crossing receiver. If we keep the kid in a rythm, everybody will be happy campers and our team will produce offensively.
If you do that play too much opponents expect it, it should have been saved for a big game in january. I thought that was one of Brians few mistakes yesterday. people froget we have been winning miostly on offense this year, we had the awful 2-3 game stretch a few weeks ago but our offense(and STs) has carried our overrated defense most of the year not the other way around olike many people believe.
Absolutely agree, the D has been suspect but had some good games, the two best were against Baltimore and Green Bay and we lost those, because of the O, life is so cruel sometimes.
Right now I think the offense has two problems that need to be fixed yesterday. 1. The WR's and Keller are dropping too many balls. An asterisk to this is Sanchez misses too many easy passes especially passes to the flat to the RB's. That isn't a big deal, but the drops are. 2. Our ball carriers are not protecting the ball. From Greene's TD run, to Keller, the WR's and even LT, they aren't protecting the ball when they know they are about to get hit. Especially in weather like that, carrying the ball in one arm when you konw you are going to get hit is not good fundamental football. We had two fumbles yesterday, and I think we were lucky it was only two. Aside from that, Rex is still taking risks in the wrong situation and not taking them in others. I hated the fake punt from our own 40. I hated not going for it on 4th when there was what, something like 6 minutes left in CHI territory? The defense was getting shredded, THAT was the time to gamble. Not at your own 40 with a lead. The O and the D have been taking turns being lousy all year. One week it's the offense, the next it's the defense. This team doesn't often play well on both sides in any given game. Very inconsistant.
I think Smith should be throwing a little more often, junc....it keeps opposing defenses honest and opposing DCs guessing...plus, it should open a few more running lanes for Smith if he decides to run the option instead. just my .02.
on the throw, i agree. on one hand its like "yay you finally did something we've been waiting all year for", while on the other its like "you should've saved it for a bigger game at this point". nice to see him opening things up later when tendencies are known. it just seemed a poor time for it. as for your second point the anemic offense of a few weeks ago is going to stick in peep's minds bc its easier to remember negativity. but you're right. take out those weeks, and the offense is somewhat back to early season form. edit: re: MBGreen's point about smith throwing more. i'd like to see it too... but with how little its been done this season, its just my opinion that it was in the wrong time. obviously if it becomes something used more in the upcoming weeks my argument is moot... but for hte right now it seemed poor timing.
Considering we beat the Steelers and we ran the ball very well on them and scored 27 points on the Bears and ran the ball exceptionally well, I'd say we are better then early season form, the defense needs to get it together for the rest of the season.
I think we should be using the wildcat LESS, it happened to work yesterday which was great but it hasn't worked much of the season. There are other ways to get Brad invovled than just the WC. We knew he was going to throw again at some point, I don't think that point should have come in what was essentially a meaningless game.
of course it was poor timing....because it didn't yield any positive results. But if Schotty is smart, he'll call for it again next week...and hopefully in the WC round. Opposing DCs shouldn't automatically assume Smith is going to run everytime he's behind center. His running will be more effective if opposing DCs believe there's a threat to pass as well.
for the record, i'm agreeing with you. however, it didn't become a meaningless game until about 2 minutes after the final whistle blew. so in an effort to win a game to get you in the playoffs, i can understand trying to mix things up and use something they've not seen and probably not prepared for.
I hate the wildcat in general, junc....but your buddy Schotty seems to love it. So if he's going to utilize the wildcat....at the very least, he should use it correctly. Call a few passes to keep the opposing defenses on their toes. I mean, Smith was a QB in college for a reason.
I kind of agree, but the only problem is two of the three times Smith has thrown it, it was deep and both were seriously under thrown and today almost picked off. That makes me a little nervous.
well....someone needs to attempt a few passes. Maybe Tomlinson should do it...he's got more career TD passes than Clemens.
