Since we've clinched the play-offs... For what player (who has a good chance of falling to the second round) would you trade 2012's 1st rd pick? In other words (since many don't seem to understand). I'm not talking about TRADING UP. I'm talking about drafting a guy with our 2011 1st rd pick and then trading 2012's 1st rd pick for a player that drops to the top of the 2nd. I think if we're lucky enough to get Beal with our 1st rd pick we should really look into getting one of those 3-4DEs that surely will fall in the top of the 2nd. Or vice-versa if Beal falls to rd 2 and we've already drafted a top 3-4DE. Also Powe would be a guy I'd be thinking about (but still haven't made up my mind). If we lose one of our WRs (but I hope it'd be a franchise-then-trade) I wouldn't mind trading next 2012's first if a guy like Floyd falls...
It's time to start trading back and adding picks as opposing to reducing picks. Tannenbaum is going to have rebuild the defense and make sure the offense can continue to grow on the last two years.
For a change (I love trading back) I don't agree at all. We are a few players away on D (assuming we can keep everyone) from becoming a dominant team... we don't need depth as we already have it... we need an elite 3-4DE and an elite OLB to turn into a different animal.
I am so confused by what is being proposed here. What it sounds like to me: If we need someone in the 2nd round should we trade a 2012 1st round pick to get them. If that is what you are asking (which I doubt) the answer is hell no
I disagree. They have to start looking at the big picture (5-7 years). It's unfortunate but Tom Brady is in their division and he's not going anywhere. They have to build a team to be good every year, not a short period of time. They have to build a defense that can pressure Brady with 4 and has the speed behind it to actually cover in a zone or man. Currently the defense can't get pressure with 4 or play zone due to the lack of speed at linebacker. The Patriots completely changed their offense this year and they now have an offense thats built to destroy our slow defense. The Jets have Tannenbaum/Rex and Sanchez and thats probably good enough to be a playoff team most years but they are going to have essentially rebuild the defense over the next two off seasons. Jenkins, Pace, Thomas, Taylor, Scott and Ellis will all be gone by the the start of 2012. I'm not so concerned about the defensive line but the linebackers and secondary is going to have to be completely revamped. Do you really want to give Cromatie a big contract? Can the Jets really afford to have two big money cornerbacks? Probably not. Kyle Wilson has to pan out. Are Eric Smith, Pool, Lowery and Coleman really part of the long term solution? Rex has had most of these guys for 2 years and they are extremely inconsistent. Coleman and Smith have been in the NFL for 5 years. They are both solid roll players but thats it. The personnel on defensive is extremely flawed. Adding one or two players is not going to fix that. Adding to this problem is that if the NFL has a salary cap in 2011 the Jets are going to be in a tough spot. They would have to deal with Harris, Holmes, Cromatie, Braylon, Brad Smith, Eric Smith, Pool and probably some other people I'm forgetting. If the Jets are going to be competing every year for the playoffs and superbowl then they need to follow the strategy of teams like the Steelers, Patriots and Eagles. Get as many draft picks as possible and build your team through the draft. You can add 5 to 10 players every year at low cost that will only know and be trained in the jets systems.
that is what is being asked, and I agree on the absurdity of the question. Only stupid, desperate teams trade away future first rounders and I don't care who is available.
This thread smokes dick. I wouldn't give up next year's first unless it moved us up pretty damn far in 2011's draft for someone like AJ Green or Nick Fairley. ...but in order to get one of them, we'll have to give everything and then some. So to answer your question: I wouldn't give up our 2012 first rounder for anyone that realistically be around.
The only way you trade a future first is if you are going up to get a can't miss prospect that is so far and away ahead of the next prospect on your draft board. We can't afford to do that this year. Win the SB or not this year, we are definately not 1 player away. We need elite pass rushers and elite DE's, and possibly an elite WR (should we lose holmes/edwards). The only way we trade up for a top player is if we somehow fleece somebody like we did to cleveland to go get Sanchez. Since thats not a very likely scenario, we won't likely be doing that..
Nobody. This year/next more than any, we need to keep all our picks. Our D is extremely thin almost everywhere. We need upgrades on the DL, OLB, and FS. We could also use more speed at ILB.
Jets D are actually in dire need of restocking. 1. Their both OLBs, while serviceable, are NOT fearsome pass rushers. If you don't generate pressure from the OLB position, what's the point of running 3-4? In that regard, Jets are short of two top-notch OLBs; they don't have to be the kind of world-beater that Clay Matthews or DeMarcus Ware is. They must generate pass rush, and they MUST be faster than the lead footed OLB combination of Pace and Thomas. 2. Jets DL: They are short of a premier NT, and the replacement for Ellis is on order as well. Seriously, Jets DL rarely commands double team on passing down - now add in the lead-footed OLBs, and you get a gigantic clusterfuck at the LOS whenever the opposing QB drops back to pass. There's a reason why Jets utilize DBs to generate pressures. Really, Jets front 7 is a massive shitstorm the way it is already. Don't let the #4 defense gig fool you. Against any potent offense, it will suffer. Even Cutler could do it. 3. Safeties: Lack of tackling, lack of coverage, and most of all, lack of brain after Leonhard. You think this is not an immediate need? The only positions where Jets are set are: CBs and ILBs.
