I'm posting this in the draft forum to get some draft talk going about Tannenbaum. It's obvious our defense is old and slow and I found it interesting that Tannenbaum has only drafted 9 defensive players in 5 drafts. Kyle Wilson- unknown Vernon Gholston- Probably his last season in the NFL Dwight Lowery- Tough to say what he is David Harris Darrelle Revis Anthony Schlegel- Out of the league. Eric Smith- Great specials, role player from LOS at best. Drew Coleman- see Lowery Titus Adams- who? So basically in 5 drafts we have Harris and Revis along with some backup secondary players. Hopefully Kyle Wilson is good but regardless it's an extremely low number to be adding on a year by year basis. Other teams with multiple picks add 5 defensive players every year. I actually don't have a problem with the draft picks. Schlegel seems to be the only true reach. I do have a problem in that we've only drafted 9 defensive players in 5 years. Thoughts?
It's not really fair to just look at one side of the ball....He's also drafted our starting QB, TE, LT, LG, C, should be starting RB and our soon to be starting FB.
I'm not saying he's a bad drafter just that he has gone very light on defense and it's part of the reason the defense is so old and slow. I think he's great with the draft and wish he would try to get more picks.
Should be an interesting off season. Tanny basically HAS to make some moves for our defense via free agency since we quite frankly dont have the draft picks to fill all our needs (not to mention some of these picks simply will miss) And with funds being limited at best its gonna be interesting
Signing the likes of Pace, Leonhard (to an extent), and Scott to big FA $$, as well as trading for Jenkins and Cro probably has a lot to do with it in my view. That's almost half of the starters on D we had going into the season. Add Revis and Harris whom you mentioned, along with Ellis and B. Thomas (both old, yet former 1st round picks) that leaves two spots on D that aren't filled with either high draft picks or big free agent signings/trades. I don't think the FO thought Ellis and Thomas would age as quickly as they have this year, resulting in the lack of pressure we get on the QB and the lack of any defensive players being drafted by us last year. I do think the FO will use ATLEAST 2 of their first 3 picks on the D this upcoming April.
First off their are the rumors/confirmation that Gholston was a Mangini pick. I think thats a pretty good spread of guys especially considering how few picks we had. Thats two Pro Bowlers, One yet unproven commodity, three role players, and one maybe two busts. Thats a decent ration Second, I dont think even the most inept defensive teams add 5 defensive players through picks. Maybe with UDFAs but when you consider trades and what not. Also it depends on the quality of the 5 players, their is a big difference between 5 early round players, and just 5 players throughout the entire draft. Also Ive said this before, but even if our Defense is old and slow (the second part I need to think about) the biggest thing we need is a pass rusher. The Steelers D isnt as young as people think (Harrison is 30+) but they have a pass rush and they are a pretty tough defense. Not that the old players will need to be replaced but if we had an elite pass rusher (cough) Gholston (cough). Not that I'm saying people had doubts about Gholston, yet when you draft someone with the 6th overall pick and ask him to sack people, you expect more than what he has contributed thus far
i can't imagine the jets doing much in free agency. Keeping Harris, Braylon or Santonio and Brad Smith are the priorities. Jets put themselves in this position but trading draft picks for veteran players.
1. I wasn't saying the picks were bad. 2. If you're the pats or eagles and you have 10+ picks most years, its not out of the question to draft 5 defensive players. We only drafted 9 defensive players in 5 drafts. 3. The Steelers are constantly drafting young defensive players that fit within their system. Ziggy Hood, Timmons, Woodley, Worldis etc... They have some old guys like Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton and Farrior but they use the draft to keep adding good young players. The Gholston pick sucks. At least it didn't cripple the Jets cap and this will probably be his last year.
Well im not going to be expecting us to land a Julius Peppers or anything, but I could see some Brodney Pool type moves. Jason Taylor, Bryan Thomas, Calvin Pace, Ellis, Possibly Jenkins I dont know how many of these guys we want to keep. But I would hope we take a look @ guys like Antwan Barnes for example. Not going to cost a ton of money, hes young enough to stick around a while, and he played for Rex in the past.
Oh absolutely but what are the odds of getting more than 1 or 2 guys who are going to stick around for a while ? Especially with OLBs, seems like these guys are oh so often bust.
There's no chance we'll neglect the defense again in the next draft. OLB, FS, OLB/DT/NT should be our top 3 picks next year.
I would hope that the front office has been scouting every defensive player in the country for players that fit the system that Rex wants to play. Lineman: Big guys that occupy space (Kelly Gregg, Devito, Pouha, Pryce) Pass rusher/OLB: Think Suggs 6'4 265 That can play as a linebacker or as an end in a 4 man front. MLB: Big versatile linebackers that can do everything from blitzing, taking on lineman, cover and play the run. Cornerbacks: Can play man to man and can tackle in space. Most teams in the NFL do not play a defensive like the Jets. Few teams put as much pressure on the cornerbacks as the jets do. Pouha and Devito are great in the Jets system but probably would be Jags on most other teams.
The Jets can save 8.5 million simply by letting go Taylor, Jenkins, and Brunell. You get to 10.1 million if you toss Hartsock. I would also consider tossing Woody if Hunter continues to excel. Free agency is rarely the answer, but the Jets will be in a spot to either vastly improve their depth or get one big name guy. -X-
You have to make decisions on guys, for sure, but letting go Jenkins and not re-signing Braylon Edwards gets you 10 million alone. You get 5 million more for Brunell, Hartsock, and Jason Taylor. That's before you even talk about Woody and LT, who are debatable cuts. -X-
They already a lot of money on the cap for 2011. Assuming they cut some older guys, that would hopefully allow them to sign some of their own free agents. Braylon Holmes Cromartie Harris Brad Smith Eric Smith Wayne Hunter Brodney Pool Folk Weatherford And some other guys based on the new CBA and how many years qualify for UFA. How many of those guys are going to bring back? And then you're going to start buying players in free agency?
I hope we don't trade up to pick up a safety or something. I'd rather trade down to the second and scoop up some D-lineman
Either trade back or stay put but no trading up. They are going to need to draft linebackers, safeties and defensive lineman and they probably need to draft a WR at some point.
