Wallace is a speed demon....there's no way in hell Lowery would've been able to hold coverage. I'm glad he wasn't flagged.....but Lowery had no choice other than to watch Wallace run free.

The league is filled with speed demon's. That's why we have safeties over the top of corners. Lowery didn't read and react quick enough, and he'll need to get better at that if he's going to be a full time safety. Given the fact that he's on the slower side he needs to be especially good in that area.

Unfortunately for Lowery...you can't teach speed. He's going to have to make up for it in other ways.....and being "flagged" isn't one of them.

Yea, I mean it was his first time starting back there so obviously we should cut him some slack. Let's see if he can grow into the position. He does have a decent skill set for it.

Agreed....I think it's the perfect fit for him in this defense. He's always had a knack for being around the ball creating turnovers...and we've been lacking that from the Safety spot for too long now.

Let's hope he takes full advantage of this opportunity.

This notion of him being slow is when you compare him to a man corner. Compared to other S he is probably one of the faster ones in the league. He ran a 4.47 at his pro day. Most S coming out of school are 4.6 guys. He is a little undersized at 185. If he puts on 10-15 pounds and loses a 10th of a second of his 40 time, he would be prototypical.

There's a difference between being slow and being caught out of position.

    Dwight Lowery's not slow.

When he was playing at SJSU, he was dangerous in the open field on interception and kick returns.

    +1

I wish people would listen to Rex's presser. He said Lowery was scared as hell back there but got better as it went along.

Fact remains that Lowery is going to look lost on occasion, till he learns the position well.

If he can fill the centerfield roll the Jets are sorely lacking, the Jets are going to be that much better off for it.

Dwight Swipe is a playmaker. He always has been. In my opinion, you can't coach that.

Just like any player in this league, he'll get better with experience.

He played decently but he still hasn't earned a starting spot yet. I'd rather have him out there instead of Eric Smith, though. Tha guy is the safety version of Eric Barton.

I am a little bit confused because Pettine said that he might consider keeping Lowery there permanently but also said that Cole played safety for basically half the game as well, which I some how didn't notice (I actually thought that was Revis back there)

I wish these reporters asked relevant and intelligent questions like if Dig and Lowery were both at 100% who would you would you start in base coverage as well as passing downs. This would let you know what Pettine actually thinks about Lowery playing safety. If Pettine says he would put Dig in ahead of Lowery on passing plays you know he thinks that Lowery sucks.

Lowery's speed is good for a safety, he's just slow for a corner. That was the exact criticism against him when we drafted him as a corner.

Not necessarily. With those two it's going to depend on the coverage. If Rex and Pettine want to go single-high as a base which they normally do then of course it's going to be Diggs because they want to use the other safety as a pass rusher. If they're playing cover two then they'd most likely put Lowery out there because he's the cover guy.

Pool is not likely to come off of the field since he is the most experienced starter so the playing time for Digs v Lowery is going to come down to whether we want to send a safety or drop him back. Given the nature of this defence as a blitzing defense, it's only natural that Digs would get more playing time.

If Lowery could blitz and cover than he would get a lot more playing time but since he can only cover and is still learning he's going to get less time than the guy who can blitz and didn't just change roles a week ago.

correct me if I am wrong, but Lowery has 2 sacks this year, and I believe him to be a pretty good blitzer. Not as good as Digs, but its not like he can't blitz ever....

You kind of missed my point. I understand which players are good at what... So if a reporter asked who would start in what package you would know that if dig was starting in 3rd and long packages, Pettine doesn't think too highly of D Lo

It's not too difficult to get sacks in this D if you are in the secondary since the front seven mostly winds up occupying blockers. Saying he's not as good as Digs is an understatement because Digs is much better at finding lanes to the QB, is stronger and is more aggressive than Lowery. Digs is practically a linebacker...who cannot cover.

Dig is starting in 3rd and long packages because we're still sending a safety in on the blitz which has been th defense's MO since Rex got here. It's not a trust issue because of talent, it's a trust issues because of philosophy and experience. Digs has been in his role for two seasons now while Lowery just made the switch to safety. It makes more sense to go with the rush package on third and long since the defense knows what they are doing instead of throwing Lowery out there to get lost when the defense is trying to get off of the field. That was my point.
