How is it that we continue to allow enormous plays for 1st down conversions when we have them pinned so far back on 3rd downs? This has happened not only today but for the past few weeks, Rex's defense cannot seem to cover guys even when they do not blitz to play prevent defense. Its agony, but we thankfully came up big in the end because our defense made the key stops. But its troubling...
I actually just posted about this is another thread. But exactly that when we rush three and they do nowhere and the QB has all day and the receivers as well, someones gonna get open somewhere on the field. Its just bound to happen unless one of the three gets in his face in 5 secs or less
It has absolutely nothing to do with the "prevent D" they were playing in the secondary, and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that they were sending a 3 man rush every time, and this team CANNOT get to the quarterback with a 3 men rush no matter what O-line they are playing. That would hurt them against any QB in the league, let alone Roethlisberger. I'm happy they ended up stopping him in the end, but they cannot let up on the blitzes on these kind of drives when they are playing good QBs. He will find the open man no matter what if they have that much time back there.
I find it troubling and disturbing that we can't put games away. We should be a dominate defensive team. We had them pinned on their 4 yard line and they marched down the field and score. Who's responsibility is it to make sure we don't allow this to happen? We have no pass rush and we give 10 yard cushions.
Some say it's b/c we always blitz on Third down. Now it's because we are dropping too many into coverage. Looks like we're damned if we do, damned if we don't. Must be the players then?
Because our coaching staff is fucking retarded and threw it on 3rd and 3 so the Steelers had the timeout that they called after the sack on 2nd down, so our defense was put into a situation they never should of been in. The Steelers should of been forced to hurry up after a huge sack and this 3rd and 24 conversion never would of happened.
wasnt just the missed tackle, revis was in a zone and that was his area ... our all-pro should to be able to stop a 3rd and 24 revis needs to start making plays in the clutch
Thank God The Refs didn't call Dwight Lowery obvious pass interference call on steelers last drive. Another gift by the Nfl for the Jets- See denver. When are the jets going to be good enough to win on their own.
I was begging Rex to stop blitzing on those 3rd and longs. I was expecting some coverage issues though, we had Pool calling the coverages so it shouldn't be a big surprise. I never thought I'd be saying this but I can't wait until Eric Smith returns, the D looked great against Miami. Pittsburgh's offense is slightly better than Miami's only because of the QB.
But sending 4 is still not blitzing, in a 3-4 D someone else besides the Dline is supposed to rush in a normal play. We are inept sending 4, so we decide to send 3. Last year and early this year, Rex would not have done so - he is coaching scared now. But the bottom line is the ineptitudeof playcalling the last two series left the Steelers with a timeout, 2 minute warning and an extra 30 seconds. Like the other poster said it is a different play if Ben has to get up right after the sack and get a play off.
I know how a 3-4 D works but on many of the 3rd and longs, (which includes 9,10yards) we were sending more than 4, often it looked like 6. With a QB like Ben who is known for his talent in and out of the pocket it would've wiser to show blitz but not. Again I know the fact that for the first time in his career Lowery starting at safety did not help against a 2 time SB winning QB.
rushing 3 should allow rex to play a hybrid defense, ie, use m2m with revis and crom on the two wideouts and the other 6 players play zone on the RB and TE's.
