The draft forum has slowed to a crawl, decided to attempt another Jet's Mock draft, haven't done one in 2 months. Jets trade out of Round 1 (novel concept) with the Bengals and pick up an Early 2nd and an early 3rd round pick. Bengals are looking to trade up for a QB, since just missing out on Andrew Luck at the top of Round 1. Draft has a Western flavor. Only one player from the east. I'm adding players of need and IMO, a good fit for Gang Green. First 2 picks concentrate on the lines. ROUND 2a) (from Bengals) Cameron Jordan, DE, Cal - I'll never say never again, since Kyle Wilson fell to #29 last year, anything is possible. While Jordan is having a nice year, and is 3-4 ready, defensive players in the Pac Ten occasionally drop lower than they should. While it's possible Jordan will be a Rd 1 selection, it's not a lock. A solid player that makes plays and has good leverage. Cam Heyward hasn't had good year, but I still think some team will draft Heyward before Jordan. ROUND 2b) Matt Reynolds, OT, BYU - A big (Tall) OT that can play RT and be a decent back-up at LT. Could bulk up some!! I've been very disappointed with our O-Line play the last 3 weeks. Woody's injury is hurting us and his age and contract will be a factor. Vlad could be considered for RT, but bring in another solid player for depth and competition. ROUND 3) (from Bengals) Steven Friday, OLB, VT - A player that isn't getting much attention, but should. Good size (6'2", 255) something Rex wants with his OLBs. Has shown a really good pass rush and making plays in the backfield, as well as some coverage skills. I believe had an injury that slowed his progress. A Top 3-4 OLB that could be a huge player in the NFL. ROUND 4) Austin Pettis, WR, Boise St - I had Pettis going earlier in previous drafts, let's be real, WAC players, even from Boise, don't go as high as they should. Titus Young has put Pettis on the backburner. Pettis will be a solid #3 WR in the NFL and a great ST player. Doesn't have elite speed. Holmes, Cotch and Pettis would be a nice 3 WR package. Edwards is done in NY! ROUND 5) Nate Williams, S, Washington - Leader on the Huskies defense. Smart and very active player always around the ball. Can cover and play the run equally well. A player that hasn't gotten much credit but is a top player in the Pac Ten. ROUND 6) Mike Mohamed, ILB, Cal - Solid tackler, needs to bulk up some, but isn't too small. Depth at the ILB position and should an excelent team's player. Could eventually become a starter. ROUND 7) Derrick Washington , RB, Mizzou - A back up for LT and Greene, IMO is a big need. Good size 6', 225 that runs well and his probably even faster than Greene and has good receiving skills. Had a Domestic Violence incident. Worth a gamble in Rd 7. Comments or questions welcome!!
Really like each of the first five picks WW, and the value seems to be about right. Jordan is a potentially elite level 34 DE, which is a position that I personally feel bad about undervaluing so far this season. We definitely need some help at that spot, because the line as it's presently constituted relies too much his high effort and not high talent. Reynolds is probably the best pure RT prospect in the draft, and while he could end up going higher because I think he can be an instant starter, it's very plausible to see him later in the 2nd. The OT class is really shifty right now, and if the top guy isn't taken until the 20s, everyone will drop. I've had my eye on Friday all season and he's impressed the hell out of me. There are a few other 34 OLB prospects that have popped into mind recently, but (like with Beal) I think a kid with his experience in a complicated defensive scheme could flourish here. Pettis will probably be a guy who can work as a short yardage possession guy and allow the Jets to use Holmes downfield a bit more if they let Edwards go. The lack of top speed should concern teams looking at him in the top 2 rounds, but after that he's great value. I've seen you pump up Nate Williams a lot and I trust your high opinion of him. He's made a few plays the handful of times I've watch UW, but I was really more focused on the monstrous Mason Foster. All I want from the safety we find is a kid smart enough to start soon and not completely suck. Depth at ILB and RB is a good bet later on, not going to find starters there anyway, so might as well take a chance on either hard working team leader types (Mohammed), or troubled kids with talent (Washington). Ah, yes. My bad. Anyway, thanks for this. Always enjoy getting educated on some guys the Jets should be looking at. This certainly hits some big needs. I wish we could go safety earlier, but the lines look more immediately in need of help.
WW is that how the value works? The Jets will have a back end of the first round pick. The Bengals will have a top of the 2nd round pick. a few positions warrants a 3rd and not a 4th? forgive my lack of knowledge of draft slot point system I'd love that trade if the math works out
By the value chart, which is getting outdated. Jets have #21 = 800 (losing Wildcard game) Bengals have Rd 2 #35.. 550 & Rd 3 #67...255 = 805 Just my guess in week 15.
Awesome mock, WW. I'm interested to hear what the coaching staff thinks about Vlad Ducasse. Hopefully he's ready to contribute next season and we can grab another position other than RT. ...maybe take a higher rated safety. I like Nate Washington, but there's going to be some great value at safety in the third round.
That was my biggest concern with the mock. we were going back to back years drafting an OL in the second round, without even giving Vlad a chance. Obviously if they don't think Vlad can do it, then go get somebody who can. But for now, I have faith that Vlad can develop into a RT and play well for us soon enough. Which is why I would love to see us grab an impact player at the end of the 2nd. Preferably a safety, but wouldnt be opposed to grabbing an OLB or even a big time receiver. Some of them simply have to fall dont they? There are so many great ones in this class, some of them need to fall at least a little.
Love the draft but... 1) If Beal or J. Jones is available at our pick would it make sense to trade down (unless we get a kings ransom)? 2) You already discussed it but I agree on the OT skepticism... although Reynolds would certainly be a value pick. Wouldn't mind having Ducasse developed as the #6 OL that comes in on run plays (although I hope he turns out to be a viable RT), or our future RG. 3) What could other intersting RB projects be? I agree tht we need another big back to go with Greene... Congrats on the work PS BTW does anyobody about Sash entering the draft or not?
Quite frankly, I'm tired of "project" picks. Wilson, Ducasse, AND McKnight all turned out to be project picks. Excluding Gholston and Slausson because of a different regime. We need players who can play substantial minutes immediately while having production.
I wouldn't call Wilson a project pick. Wilson needs to be thrown into the fire and won't get the opportunity with Revis and Cro. Sure Wilson had some hiccups early on and is now paying for it with no playing time. The Jets will eventually have to stick Wilson in there and let him play. Your second point, every team would love to put a rookie in and have an immediate impact...it just doesn't happen too often.
Slauson was a Rex/Tanny pick dude... PS Ducasse and McKnight didn't turn out to be project picks... they were projects from the start. Bit disappointed about Wilson but one could say the same about him since he came from a (very good) WAC team and we ask a lot of our CBs...
I thought I made it clear that depth at OT was a need, since Woody would be gone. If Vlad steps in at RT..great. We would need depth and a possible RT if Vlad can't cut it. Reynolds would depth replacemant in the absence of Woody. I think there will be some very good safaties in rd 2 or 3, but no impact player that is going to be in the class of Thomas or Berry...who are impact players.
We've been spoiled with 1st round production in the past few years more than a 12 year old girl with rich parents.
Touche. I thought he was 1 year before Sanchez. and Touche. I worded it wrong, the FO clearly said Ducasse was a project but they never mentioned McKnight as one, as far as I know. He became a project pick when he started coughing the ball up in the pre-season in conjunction with what seemed to be an apathetic attitude on hard knocks.
I love Nate Williams as a 5th rounder, but I really doubt he'll be there. I think he'll be 1 of the draft risers & someone will take a 3rd round flier on him -- last year TJ Ward was projected like round 4/5 & then Cleveland took him w/the 6th pick of the 2nd round and Ward's had a really good season. Williams is fast (4.5 40) and quick. He's actually game faster because he's got some good instincts.
