Martin will be light years better than Cervelli in Yankee Stadium, particularly because he'll get regular rest and because of the short porch that suits his swing. The Dodgers really ran him into the ground. If his hip is healthy, he's an upgrade. I think not getting Lee is probably a blessing in disguise. They still have flexibility, will be forced to acquire someone younger than Lee with long term upside, and they save money. The Yankees still hold the edge should these two teams face off in the playoffs, because the Phillies lineup is woeful and lefty dependent. Any decent LOOGY completely neutralizes Ryan Howard and Rollins is a shell of his former self. -X-
I know you're joking, but Montero & Joba probably wouldn't even come close to getting it done. Montero, Banuelo's, + another good prospect + a mid-level prospect probably
I have to think people are pretty split on Joba Chamberlain, whether it be health, weight, whatever, but if I were a rebuilding team I'd ask for him if only to sell him as a closer at a later date and reap even more. -X-
Felix Hernandez is younger then Joba. It could take the Mariners 3 years to become respectable and he wouldn't even be in his prime yet. He isn't going anywhere. If you want a longshot, hope the Giants somehow get crushed and think about moving Cain who's due $15 mil next year or Sanchez. More likely scenario is Kuroda from LA or hopefully Cashman can threaten to show whatever pictures he has of Ken Williams and get Gavin Floyd.
You don't need pictures of Kenny Williams to rip him off, he's the Mike Milbury of baseball--the dude just makes trades out of boredom. I think that the Yankees #1 target should be Andy Pettitte. If we convince him to come back, and we get even a marginal improvement from AJ Burnett, then we should be OK this season. We may need to add a pitcher before the deadline, but there's plenty of time for that.
Yankees signed Mark Prior to a minor league deal. He hasn't pitched in the majors since 2006, and pitched a total of 1 IP in the minors last year
Wait, we didn't resign Kerry "Morning" Wood? That would be a BIG mistake, the guy was a very solid Long to middle relief pitcher. Edit: No, we didn't resign him...the Yankees are even more fucked than I initially thought.
Wow. Well I suppose its low risk with some descent potential. Not exactly an answer to losing out on Lee.
I don't think signing someone who was highly touted as Prior to a minor league contract constitutes as desperate. If they threw 50mil at him then I'd agree.
he's a RP looking for about $10M a year. He's going to try and close somewhere, because saves = money. As good as his numbers were with the Yankees, in no way can you justify spending $10M on a set-up guy, especially when you have Robertson & Joba earning far less. I'm not saying they are as good, but for 1/15 of the price, they're far better value
