I disagree. The HC is responsible for the whole team. Parcells was a defensive guy too. But when he felt Weiss wasn't getting it done playcalling-wise he stepped in and did it himself. Rex always claims that the buck stops with him, but it sounded like he was distancing himself from the offensive issues yesterday.
That's where I disagree. How many players have said they will run through walls for him? He's not like at practice they hang out, the players bust their balls and Rex keeps a upbeat attitude with the process. As bad as the offense played, the defense played that much better. This is the same defense that got embarrassed days earlier on national TV. Pouha, prolly a unknown outside of Jet fans had a huge game. Pool played his best game of the year, Bart Scott was in on almost everything, Eric Smith did a great job calling the plays. All these players are the ones that showed they cared, Rex made them accountable and they showed the fuck up to play. Reminds me, why the hell was Bart Scott covering Marshall on his TD??
Some nervous nellies no doubt are down on Ryan very much. He did after all feed into the hype of how this was going to be a SB team and all that. He set the bar pretty damn high. But imo as long as the team doesn't fall down too far, I think he will be here for awhile. Steady progress, improving the roster, that sort of thing. Much, but not all, will involve Sanchez and his progress, or lack thereof. But not all. Ryan may have been very involved in choosing Mark, but for me even if Sanchez does not work out, which history shows would have a quite negative impact on the team's fortunes, Ryan would get a pass for that. What he would probably not get a pass for is losing the team, though, but I don't think that is really what's going on now.
You disagree that ultimately Ryan will be judged by results? I thought that was my point. The fact that the D played well I agree about, but that's all well and good, the team as a whole did not play well.
He said some very weird things in his presser yesterday This and he considered benching Sanchez......two stupid things to say and I doubt he really even meant both. They'll just be blown up by the media.
I think at this stage in his career, he can only be accountable for so much on the offense. He took him to what, week 11 last year to realize he should sit in on SOME offensive meetings. lol If we have a top 5 D, which is his baby but no offense to match, he'll get some of the blame but Schotty would be fired before Rex if that's what you're getting at.
Maybe not stupid to do it, but since he didn't why bring it up at all? It can just create more uncertainty in Sanchez mind. He just talks too much.
He's the HC. You can't ignore your responsiblity over all areas of the team by saying I was brought in to run the D. He's responsible, whether by omission if not commission. In the end it doesn't matter which of those two it is.
That's a good comparison and a well thought out argument. Its just the talking with this guy - if he had conducted himself like other coaches, it might be easier to accept what appears to be happening. The constant talking and clowning makes you think that he is trying to make up for something he lacks. If the bravado was helping us win, and maybe it did in a few games, ok its tolerable. But now it becomes an embarrassment. He seems to have reigned it in the last 2 weeks (except for the stupid Bears comment). Lets hope he gets his act together.
I honestly believe Rex is happy with the defense but he knows people think of him as defense first coach and he doesn't want to sound like he's completely satisfied because it's about the team, not the one unit he has a lot of control over.
I think this is mostly it. I'm sure he's not blind and knows this POS sits right at the feet of the offense, but he doesn't want to turn the locker room into an Us v. Them situation, so he'll "spread the blame".
Protecting Sanchez and alienating the defense at the same time isnt a good idea. Why cant he tell Sanchez he played shitty? Is this kid really that fragile?
Post game frustration should be pointed towards our offense. I get too upset sometimes and say stupid shit, but this game I couldn't blame the D at all. 2, fucking 2 OFFENSIVE mistakes cost us this goddamn game, and the fact that we couldn't get in the endzone, and when we did, he drops it. REX NEEDS TO SHUT HIS FUCKING MOUTH. Plain and simple. I like his fiery attitude, but dude, shut the fuck up already, and make this team play better.
This is the challenge... if you want to be an ELITE defense you have to score points on defense, plain and simple.
Defense never scores for us. On theHenne fumble, ball is sitting there, we pick it up and fall down. The Steelers and Ravens defense score TD, we don't. That's what he is referring to. And the TD was a blown coverage
I think what he is getting at is that the Jets will attempt to bring in OC that can handle the responsibility of not having the HC watching over him before they get rid of Rex. It seems it would make little sense to blow up the HC that is the main cog in making the defense a top unit because the offense sucks. Keep what is working for the defense and go back to the drawing board on offense. You are right that Rex has the responsibility but I don't think he will be held accountable for the offense by losing his job anytime soon.
I was eagerly awaiting a late morning presser to see what he looks like the morning after. Nothing. Must be because they're dealing with the Sal Alosi matter, because he's scheduled to address the press at 2:30.
