At this point it depends on the length of the contract, Beltran is off the books at the end of this year.

Do we have any idea what the length of Dice k's contract is, he has also been injured, the last thing we need is to bring in a pitcher with 3 years left on a contract who will be injured for 1 and 1/2 years of it. (remember Pedro?).

I personally would suck it up and keep Beltran play him in right field get him off the books and use the money to get a quality pitcher in the FA market next year.

oh....i thought i saw he only had one year left. If it's 3, then fuck it, I'd rather not make that trade then.

Alderson has $4 million and change to spend to fill about ten spots. At least he is adopting the tanny role of taking on players such as paulino who have talent but also have flaws. if we can get 2 or 3 of these to step up it won't be as bad as some want to paint it.

The pride is back in New York Mets baseball because of guys like Boof Bonser and D.J. Carrasco.

    Grapefruit League championship, baby!

Just a comparison. A few years ago Omar Minaya gave Scott Schoenweis a 3 year, 10.6 million dollar contract. Scott. Schoenweis.

So this is a step forward. Baby steps...

I think they should seriously consider not spending any more money and using the rest of the budget to see if they can cut Castillo and defer the remaining year. Or, you know, just pay he and Ollie already. If one of them gets a bench spot that could go to someone with any value, I will probably....

well I'll probably just curse or something.

The reward is not ending up with another shitty overpaid contract

Some of the "no risk no reward" guys we've traded or released in the last few years were Heath Bell, Jason Vargas, Jeff Keppinger, Darren O'Day, and Matt Lindstrom.

Vargas would have been the Mets fourth best starter last season behind Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, and RA Dickey and ahead of Jon Niese and Hisanori Takahashi. O'Day is one of the best relievers in baseball. Lindstrom is better than Manny Acosta and Raul Valdes, and Jeff Keppinger would have been our best second baseman by a mile, and provided some utility value.

During that same time, here's some expenditures for similar players

    Francisco Rodriguez- 37 million
    Oliver Perez- 36 million
    Louis Castillo- 24 million
    Scott Schoenweis- 10.8 million
    JJ Putz- 6.3 million
    Sean Green- 1.5 million

That adds up to 115 million. The Mets spent 115 million on that.

So needless to say, I disagree wholeheartedly on the no risk, no reward.

You could also add Brian Bannister to that list, since that's how bad the Mets pitching has been. Brian Bannister sucks, but he'd certainly have provided the Mets with more value than Oliver Perez and John Maine over the last two seasons. That says a lot about talent evaluation, or lack thereof.

People are very divided on "moneyball," but it's not about computer models replacing analysis and experience, it's about finding value and running your team like a well organized business. Thankfully, that seems to be what the Mets are doing now.

I actually like the Boof signing, he's shown the ability to be decent and not be absolute dogshit.

This is about trying to be competitive, build foundations and take 12 months out of our lives until we rid ourselves of the castillo/perez type contracts.

I don't know how you guys feel about this idea but I like the Bosox mentality of not giving out long term contract to players over the age of 34 years old.

I would hope the Mets instill this type of ideology with the new regime.
