I discussed how Woodhead earned PT and he got touches in meaningful moments not down 45-3 in the 4th qtr.
OK Junc. Look at the games he got carries last season. They were mostly in garbage time - the difference was we were winning instead of getting anally raped.
I said touches not carries, he was invovled in the pass game. They were trying to use him in leon's role later in the year. The point is he earned playing time, he even had a reception in the playoff win at SD- do you think in a close div rd game they'd trust McKnight to be on the field? -Carolina game was a somewhat close game throughout, he had 1 rush and 2 recs -TB was a blowout but he was in early, he got a carry on our first possession and a rec on our 2nd possession. -Atlanta game was close throughout, he had a carry and 2 recs -In the Indy game he had a rec on our 2nd possession He played in meaningful situations, he earned the trust of the coaches to be on the field in those moments. Joe has not earned that trust yet, obviously we all hope he will but it hasn't happened yet no matter how much rex talks him up.
I wouldn't. So what's that 5 total touches in meaningful situations over the course of 19 games? Impressive. Most of his touches were in fact in garbage time, like McNugget got the other day.
It was more than 5 but the # doesn't mean anything, if it was one it was one more than McKnight has received b/c woodhead earned the trust of the coaching staff.
if it was more than 5, it wasnt much more ... woodhead was afforded those opportunities because he was the only back on the roster that could catch as it has been explained to you 120309012390349044 times, if LT is on last years team (instead of TJ), woodhead does not see any meaningful touches
Thomas Jones has had as many as 56 recs in a season, he could catch. Danny was on the field b/c he earned the trust of the coahcing staff, if he did not he would not have had even one meaningful touch. That is the point you guys fail to grasp, McKnight has not earned any trust. if he did he'd be getting a couple of touches a game.
right, because the exception proves the rule ... TJ is not a good receiver out of the backfield, period. he can catch a screen (like damn near every back) but he is not beating anyone on a route out of the backfield the point you fail to grasp is that at comparable levels of experience, woodhead didnt have any meaningful touches either
I at first was pessimistic about McKnight, primarily because I was thinking he was going to be doing absolutely nothing for us this year. Well he's emerging as a special teamer and he was pretty good off three carries last week. Since Belicheck has his team playing hard on every snap, I don't think McK was the benefactor of playing during "garbage time". While these are all very minor accomplishments, they do make me feel a little better about the guy. I will chalk this year up to be his "learning" season, unlike Gholston who did absolutely 0 his first year.
Yep. 4th round picks can have learning seasons, where they play special teams and tackle for the 1st time since they were 15 and get a couple of carries every now and then. The vomiting during the conditioning test and the early nerves will be long forgotten. He's not going to be a bust.
How do you know that? A fourth round pick who plays like crap as a rookie can pan out eventually but they might also be a total bust. It's too soon to say either way.
He has a spot on special teams. There's one way he's not a bust. I'm not saying he's going to have 200 touches a season, and he doesn't need to hit that plateau to not be a bust.
so you think they'd trust some UDFA to catch the ball over TJ late in the season while fighting for a playoff spot and even in the playoffs? It's amazing these points are argued. Can you guys just admit Joe hasn't showed anything for the coaches to trust him on the field? That doesn't mean he will never get it but right now he doesn't.
I don't agree with your premise, either...main reason being: 1. Woodhead had a spot, a role on last year's team, that being a pass-catching back. You can talk about Jones having 56 catches in a season all you want, but that's not his ideal role. 2. McKnight has no such spot, no such role on this year's team. LT is the pass-catching back and Greene is taking the other carries. Example: If Leon never gets hurt last year, Greene probably never sees the field. This doesn't mean the coaching staff didn't trust Greene, it means he did not have a role until Leon got hurt.
Special Teams gunner. Did injuries play a part? Yes. Has he done well in the role? Yes. He could have easily been a shitty gunner and Westy would have found someone else. He got on the field and is doing well in that role.
Woodhead was the 3rd RB last year, McKnight is the 3rd this year. Woodhead earned the trust of the coahces, McKnight has not. If he had he would be getting touches no matter who was in front of him. We had a better ground game last year and Woodhead had more meaningful carries than Joe has had this year(zero).
Woodhead was the 3rd RB, but was the BEST pass-catching RB. He was used in this role. McKnight is the 3rd RB, but is NOT the best pass-catching RB. He has no role. I dont agree it has anything to do with trust. Earlier in the year, maybe, but not now. He just has no spot on the team right now to get any touches.
We have very different definitions of bust. I'd say he ultimately has to get at least 80 touches a season or be a big special teams contributor (playing on all four teams and being a return man) not to be a bust.
