Although most of you are going to act as though it's sacriligious to compare the Pats & Jets defenses I am going to do it anyway. As a Pats fan who has intently watched every this season, I feel that our defense is not nearly as bad as people (Pats fans included) think. So, I laid out the points allowed sorted by the situation of the game. Pats down more than 8 pts: 17 Pats down 8 pts or less: 44 Tie game: 40 Pats up less than 8 pts: 48 Pats up more than 8 pts: 117 now the same for the Jets defense... Jets down more than 8 pts: 0 Jets down 8 pts or less: 19 Tie game: 50 Jets up less than 8 pts: 70 Jets up more than 8 pts: 48 Important things to note: 1. I may have made some minor mistakes, but I believe this to be fairly accurate. If either team has allowed a special teams score, I probably included it as defense. 2. Total points allowed: Pats 266, Jets 187 3. 165 out of 266 points allowed (62%) by Pats defense have come with a lead. 4. 117 out of 266 points allowed (44%) on Pats defense have come with a two possession lead. (many, many garbage points) 5. In tight games (tie or one possession lead or deficit), Pats have allowed LESS points (132) than Jets (139) Although I don't expect to convince anyone that the Pats have a better defense than the Jets, because I don't honestly believe that myself, some of you may admit that our defense is better than advertised. Also, if you would believe Belichick, or Wilfork, or the media in general, our defense is improving on a weekly basis.
Jets play more close games while Pats play blowouts. Pats blowout bad teams like the lions while the Jets dont.
So 63% of the points against the Jets came when they were ahead and 62% of the points against the pasts came when they were ahead. cool story bro
understood, and I'm sure that is part of it. I guess my main point here is that the Pats defense has allowed so many points late in games with huge leads, and those points count against us in defensive stats and rankings same as any other.
Do you not understand the other areas of defense? When a team can run the ball down your throat and control the clock it's a great formula for winning. We give up a TD less a game on average. We've won games with our defense this year, something the Pats have not done. Of course a Pats fan will try and explain away allowing 24 points a game and 400 yards, but that will bite you in the ass. I don't think Cleveland got lucky, Rex and Rob came up with that defensive game plan and your defense could not stop 1 player. Why do you care so much about the defense anyway? Big deal, your offense wins your games.
Yeah. Honestly idk whether we just overplay the prevent defense too early in games or we just don't have the endurance to play in the 4th quarter, but many of the games that should have ended in blowouts ended up much closer than they should have been (hence the massive amount of points allowed with leads) see chargers, colts, steelers, etc
"other areas of the defense" - what are you talking about? This include points allowed in all areas of the defense. Are you talking about clock management with a running game? If so, fine maybe you guys are better than that but it doesn't really negate anything I said. Not too many teams have "run the ball" down our throat. Cleveland is obviously one, Jets another, but LT and Shaun Green haven't really been nearly as effective as they were during the start of the season. When did I (or anyone) say that the Browns were lucky in beating us? You essentially attacked me with you post without actually even acknowledging anything that I said. Bring your thoughts to another thread where you guys just generally bash each other without any critical thinking.
If the Pats D has a good night tonight, then that is because the Jets are doing something wrong not vice versa.
74% is incorrect according to what you posted. Pats up less than 8 pts: 48 Pats up more than 8 pts: 117 117 + 48 = 165 165/266 = .62
LT, and SHONN have been effective enough. We've been passing more than usual keeping them fresh for those cold/bad weather games. Other areas is what you just addressed. While points allowed is really all that matters, if your team is giving up nearly 400 yards a game it's recipe for disaster. While most media outlets have been trying to knock our victories, they've been blinded by Tom's great play and aren't looking close enough at a very weak defense. There was a reason we controlled most of the first game. Plus 3 on turnovers, and won the TOP battle by 5 minutes.
I stand corrected, I added up the jets points then divided by pats total. Still wasn't really the most important thing I was trying to say here.
When you have the #1 scoring offense in the league, obviously more of the points you surrender will be when you're up. There's really no two ways around it, your defense sucks.
I hear ya, but if you look at last year, Greene was nonexistent until the later games. He is made for cold weather situations. Not as sure about LT, but he is still pretty explosive. He also wants revenge against the Pats fans for calling him washed up last year. I would be surprised if at least one of the two doesn't have a good game against your team. Lets put it this way, I'd rather have them than Woodhead and Ben Jarvis Green Ellis Manning Montana Bradshaw Smith at runningback
I won't disagree with anything you said here except "aren't looking close enough at a very weak defense". I think that people aren't looking close enough at our defense, and are thus concluding that it is "a very weak defense" due to overall stats. I support this argument with the numbers in my post. I think that the closer you look the better this defense looks. Aside from what I mentioned in my first post, I will also make these arguments: While we give up yards, we play well in the redzone, something the jets do not. As you mentioned turnover ratio is also important and the Pats are #2 in the AFC (not behind the Jets mind you).
What you just don't want to face is the fact that what your offense does on average does not match what the Jets have allowed on average. The Pats are averaging 30 points a game, but the Jets only allow 17 points on average. In the last game you scored 14 points (right in line with the Jets average allowed) and the Jets scored 28 points (right in line with what the Pats defense allows). What is your answer to this?
I think the most important thing you're trying to say is even though the Pats defense is ranked lowest in the AFC (second worst in the NFL), they still suck. But you're trying to make excuses with some numbers.
