You watch a lot of UCLA football in Italy?

Guys like DeAndre McDaniel and Robert Sands are way more physical than Rahim Moore.

...and let's not get into this age crap again.

Again, the McDaniel pick makes perfect sense. We need a guy that match up on tight ends that can also be a force in run support. McDaniel is the perfect player for that role.

Rahim Moore made a lot of plays last year for UCLA, but no one that watched them both play would say that Moore was a better player than DeAndre McDaniel last year. Moore is a good option as a centerfielder, but he doesn't have the physicality to play the role that Eric Smith does. He can take Pool's spot sure, but they'd still be in trouble with TEs and other big wideouts.

BTW- I fixed the Cleveland issue in the 2nd round (but probably created a bunch of other mistakes).

It's amazing what you find on streaming these days :p that said no I haven't watched many but I 've seen him play... do you watch all the bruins games?

I agree they are more physical... I was talking abouth height, weight, speed. That said they are more physical but they have less ball instincts. Not by much (I'm talking about McDaniel), but imo we already have a physical FS in E. Smith.

3 years (or 2 and a half) is a lot of difference though! Especially since both McDaniel and Moore would have to be schoold in and aren't finished products by any mean.

THIS is what it comes down to. You and Mr. E want what mr E described in his thread (and McDaniel would be the right pick)... I want a centerfield to rotate with Smith depending on the coverage we want to bring (and Moore would do better in that role imo).

McDaniel is a replacement to E. Smith, I don't want that (although it wouldn't hurt, an upgrade is always an upgrade), I want someone to complement him.

You want to spend a 2nd round pick in a deep draft at positions we need on a part time free safety? Moore's a good player, but he wouldn't add to the team like they need.

The reason that they should be adding a safety in the 2nd round is that they won't have to have two situational players who are basically both ineffective at what the Jets need most. An aggressive scheme doesn't exactly make for a lot of plays with a free roaming centerfield safety.

    None of this is true.

    ...especially the height/weight/speed statement.

Robert Sands is listed at 6'5 221.

DeAndre McDaniel is listed at 6'1 215.

    Rahim Moore 6'1 196.

In my opinion, they're all around the same speed...and for a guy like Sands, that's pretty ridiculous.

Eric Smith plays the run well. He can't defend the pass to save his life. He's been abused by tight ends all season long. McDaniel would give us a complete safety - not a rotational run stopper. He can do it all. I think Sands can too.

Saying that Moore has better ball skills than Sands and McDaniel is completely false. It's obvious that you're just looking at Moore's INT numbers.

What can I say... guess we don't have that many needs :p.

That's your opinion... my opinion is an E.Smith + Moore rotating combo can work better than just having McDaniel in there (or ES + McD).
An aggressive scheme (imo) can put a centerfielder in a position to make plays on those balls that come out of the QBs hands too quickly. Probably it would mean we wouldn't be able to cover big guys as well, but we would make more big plays...

That said I will agree that either McDaniel or Moore will improve this team so I wouldn't be pissed if we wnt the Clemson route... I'm just nit-picking.

I wasn't talking about Sands because I've never seen him play/focused on him. My bad, I should have made that clear. BTW a 6'5" FS just doesn't sound right. Moore can put on weight... again, he's 20 yrs old. In two years he can put an extra 15lb (although he'll never get as big as McD).

You don't think Moore has sligthly better ball skills than McD (Again no idea about Sands)? Og, agree to disagree...

We play man-to-man and a lot of the time, one of our safeties is matched up on a tight end.

The Jets need a safety that can consistently cover the tight end. Eric Smith can't do that. That's not an opinion either. It's a obvious fact after watching him struggle all season long.

    mmm... ok... I'm thinking...

Ps While I think, why wouldn't Moore be able to play on a TE and succeed?

I would die if this was our draft.

Add some DL depth and a speedy ILB and the defense is pretty much restocked with youth.

IMO, Williams is the only safety worthy of a solid round 1 grade (even with the suspension), that's why I said the safety class is weak at the top of the draft. There isn't an "elite" safety in this class. Berry and Thomas spoiled us from last year, player's like them don't come around too often. It's a shame we weren't in a position to draft Earl Thomas.

DMC, Moore, Barron all have warts and aren't worthy of elite status. I could see a team taking a chance on DMC in very late rd 1 or early 2.

As far as Sash, I think it's 50/50 he comes out, especially with Stanzi being done.

Round 2 should be very interesting, I could see 5 or 6 safeties being drafted, depending on who declares.

I don't blame you, like I said, it just came out last night.

And I agree, Bama has a ton of players that will take advantage of The Combine, Pro Day, etc..., especially Barron. He and BJ Scott were ranked as top athletes in that 2008 Class, it's a shame only Barron turned out(BJ Scott is transferring). He was an amazing HS prospect, he was recruited as a DB, an OLB, a RB, and a WR by schools.

I think he needs a decent-good supporting cast in the NFL though, he's not talented enough to hold an entire secondary together(see Bama this year). But if you give him that, he'll make plays for you.

I might try my hand at a mock myself, I started one 2 years ago, but it never got past the top 10. And no, the players' ages won't go into account in my mock

Maybe its because I watch all irish games but if Atlanta passes up on a big WR who outside of tough injuries like a Michael Floyd, they will learn to regret it. I have Floyd in that 20-25 range in terms of where he will be picked so him slipping to round 2 is a borderline heist. Reminds me of so much of Dwayne Bowe....hopefully Floyd can put everything together unlike Bowe in alot of his career(Drops noticeably)

Also I like the Locker fit to Oakland....though I think he will kill the combine and wow people in interviews. Tebow got into round 1 and I think Locker will with a team trading up for him like a Buffalo or Oakland.

I also think we need a good coverage safety so if the Clemson kid by all accounts had a rough year in coverage, that might turn me off. Brodney Pool is a solid run stopper at his spot but his coverage vs TEs is very suspect. Have not seen of this prospect though to really condemn or be happy with the pick though to be honest.

McDaniel didn't have a rough year in coverage. He made some mistakes, but everything he does wrong is coachable.

I don't know if the team can afford that though.....we got away with it on Kyle Wilson because of the addition of Cromartie.

We need a safety to really step up in coverage because with no real pass rush, the QBs can just throw down to the TE for 15-20 yards on us.

I am also concerned about Newton going to the pro level and especially as a top 5 pick. Maybe its because everytime I see Newton he strikes me EXACTLY like Vince Young. Awesome college player, dual threat, has had maturity problems by some accounts I don't know it just strikes me as a big similarity. Not even getting into these current problems Newton is fighting off which may hurt him a bit during draft interviews. Young was a former pro bowler sure but he has been a massive disappointment for the Titans as that 3rd overall pick with maturity problems, inconsistencies, poor reads and little to no leadership shown.

Whisenhunt is a hard ass coach too who prefers experience over youth. I don't think that is a good fit for Newton IMO. Can smell a feud between the two similar to Young vs Fisher.....

is there anyway we skip the safety position this year and just go OLB and DE and then depth depth depth.

My point is, similar to last year we all thought, Dline will be addressed in either the 1st or 2nd but obviously that need has translated to this year . Do you think we do the same this year and hold off on safety till next season?

Just a thought , even though Id consider Safety tied with DE as our 2nd need.

    ...

That's the reason why DeAndre McDaniel would be drafted by the New York Jets. He would excel at covering tight ends. DMC would be a major upgrade over Eric Smith and Brodney Pool.

McDaniel gets caught out of position sometimes, but he has great range and he makes big time plays when the ball's in the air. I'd trust this kid out there, especially with NFL coaching.

Hopefully your right, we need a good coverage safety.

Also another thing look at the draft...

    - 2 CBs for the Eagles? Sure I can see one but with the money Samuel's making, and also of the use of Oline depth I think Reid gets big lineman in round 2.

    - San Fran has to get a QB somewhere.............Foles would be a great fit in round 2. Carr, the soon to be gone Smith and Troy Smith isn't a good QB rotation at all. Maybe you got them getting Kyle Orton as a FA GH but they need a signal caller, especially with a new coach coming in.

    Haha, sounds good to me.

Broyles is just as good of a WR as Floyd, and he'd also be a better fit opposite Roddy than Floyd would. If this WR class weren't as stacked as it is, Floyd would still be a first rounder despite my concerns, but the talent just drops him down.

As for Locker, the same type of deal applies. Unless he really does wow at workouts and during Senior Bowl week, there are just better quarterbacks potentially out there. The only reason I have him before Gabbert and Foles is that I think the Raiders would be all over him. Tebow went in Rd 1 because of a weak QB class and the fact that he was Tim Tebow. Locker doesn't have that kind of fire behind him.

If they don't think they can coach a player into starting, then they need to get a safety through Free Agency.

Newton isn't like Vince Young, he's more like a very athletic Ben Roethlisberger. Unlike Young, he has a fantastic arm, a natural release, and tremendous leadership skills. Athletically he and Young may be similar (though I'd give Cam an edge there too), but that's where the similarities end. Young couldn't handle anything on his own, and has repeatedly collapsed under pressure.

Newton has thrived under intense scrutiny this season and is succeeding despite being years younger than VY. Young was a total flake from the moment he got to Tennessee, if Young had faced this pressure at UT he would have never played a game.

Honestly, and I don't mean to come across as a jerk, but comparing the two is just completely and totally wrong. All they are in comparison are two tall, fast quarterbacks, Newton is way ahead of Young in terms of mechanics and maturity. As far as leadership goes, everyone has praised what he's done this year at Auburn and their success is based almost entirely on what he's shown both on and off the field.
