i love how so many people think woodhead is a rookie am i pissed he is making a big stink on NE? sure, i mean fuck i liked the guy, he was a little guy who played hard. of course, a lot of new england fans like him because hes a little white guy who plays hard, but thats besides the point. hell have decent success on the pats, and we will always be forced to wonder why we let a guy like that go. but if you remember last year, he didnt do much of anything, and like has been said a million times, im sure he was given ample opportunity to prove himself with the jets... i wish we still had leon though no doubt. he was/is still despite not being a jet anymore my favorite player. he changed so many games for the jets. he loved it here too i was sad to see him go. only positive, #29 titans jerseys on sale
McKnight made a tackle. That's good. It's funny how any little thing he does becomes instant proof that you guys were right all along, while Woodhead is doing a lot more and that counts for nothing. All that matters is a special teams play from last year because that suits your argument.
I'm not using it to say "I was right". I am confident that the Jets FO made a smart decision based on a number of factors. That doesn't necessarily mean McKnight will turn out to be a good player, it just means that I think they made a good decision based on the facts available. I don't need the guys freaking out about Woodhead to validate my opinion. Once again, Woodhead wouldn't be doing what he's doing for the Pats on the Jets. He would have been inactive. Luckily McKnights skillset fit right into the position we needed to fill when Cole went down. Woodheads, not so much. So in my estimation, we already got more out of McKnight this year than we would have out of Woodhead. If a RB goes down and McKnight fails to fill in well, that would obviously change. I'm not going to be like some other people and assume he'll fail. One more thing:
McKnight didn't ONLY make a tackle... he was always there when the returner catched the ball... I'm a Woodhead supporter in this discussion but let McKnight have credit where it's due.
I'm not assuming McKnight will fail, I just don't get the blind faith some people have in him while trashing guys like Woodhead and Leon who actually are doing and have done something in the NFL. If the Jets wanted to keep a guy to make big hits on special teams they would have kept Chauncey Washington. They kept McKnight because of his natural ability but now aren't sure if he's even going to be a RB or a CB or what. So it's good that he can do something, considering we moved out some good guys to keep him, and hopefully we get through the last third of the season without needing a third RB. So far the Jets have gotten away with the move to a degree because LT and Greene have been healthy, and LT has been better than anyone thought he would. The rub, of course, is that Woodhead is helping the Pats, who are our main obstacle to a special season right now. Rex and Tannenbaum have even said as much, they're not going to trash their own guy but the reailty is they gave New England a key player by accident, similar to giving Miami Chad Pennington two years ago and then watched him come into our building to win the division. I can't speak for everyone on here, but for me I'm not "freaking out" over it because we're having a great season so far. But those of us who didn't like the whole Leon/McKnight/Woodhead thing the way it played out in the summer certainly don't feel any better about it now. That's doesn't make us idiots.
My faith isn't really in Joe McKnight. I hardly know jack about him. My faith is in our FO who has made smart decision after smart decision for years now. The move was made for the long term considering how much talent we have a RB. Even so, already this season we've gotten more out of McKnight than we would have from Woodchuck IMO. Saying "they don't know if he is going to be a CB or a RB" has to be a joke, right?
I just know the McKnight will never live up to the players he will be replacing. And its totally unfair to him. He had Reggie Bush in college. Unfair. He'll replace LT here. Unfair. And some believe he's replacing a beloved LW right now. Unfair. Poor kid is going to have an uphill battle his whole career. I'm rooting for him.
How is it a joke? Did they not talk about making him a CB? Has he played RB except for three garbage time snaps at Buffalo? Looks like they're not sure what to do with him but hope he can do something, a lot like Gholston. Saying he's for the "future" in the NFL, especially when there might not be NFL next year, is a way of trying to justify keeping a guy who hasn't been what they hoped he'd be, at least not yet. Also, when people have to start resorting to names like "Woodchuck" or harping on him being small and white just shows you're running out of any real criticism except for a missed tackle over a year ago. I'm sure a lot of the McKnight club here would have kept Ryan Yarborough for the "future" and not wasted their time with short, white, undrafted Wayne Chrebet, either.
I think this is about where most of us not worried about Woodhead or Leon are coming from. Outside of Gholston what really bad move has Tanny made?
Tanny's only biggest places of concern are the LG conundrum. But Slauson looks like he can become a damn good LG for years to come, which would make his 09 draft a pure HR draft with 3 picks. Holy fuck that is amazing. Depth is another place of concern, but only at the QB position Its pretty insane how stacked this team is.... still need a pure pass rusher.
I get that but nobody is perfect, either. Again, I can't complain about the job Tannenbaum has done overall, but if you look at the reality of who is doing what and where, letting Woodhead go and help the Pats didn't work out for us. Similar to cutting Pennington and freeing him up to go and turn around the Dolphins wasn't a good move for that year. It happens. Rex said on 1050 the other day if he had a crystal ball no way would they have made Woodhead available to go help New England but that's the way it goes sometimes. Doesn't make them bad at their jobs or us not a good team, but if you can't see that it's worked out badly to this point you're looking at it with blinders on. If Woodhead went to Arizona or somewhere and had a monster season nobody would give a shit, we'd all be thrilled for him but wouldn't really miss him.
I really hate to get back in this because it's stupid but are you seriously using a positive thing about him to trash him? The only reason we know about the DB thing is because Rex praised him for his work on the scout team. You talk about people reaching for things about Woodhead and then turn around and use something that was seen as a positive by the coaching staff to trash McKnight? Now just for fun, how many years did the Jets keep Chrebet on the PS before he made an impact?
Rex was talking about how athletic he was and said he could play CB. Obviously his projected role is as a RB. Calling Woodhead woodchuck isn't meant to be a criticism. When I keep typing Woodhead, woodchuck comes to mind. Dismissing any talk about the future in regard to this situation is silly. Neither of them were expected to be big contributors this year so by default they had to think in terms of the future. You keep thinking like he's supposed to be a major contributor this season when that wasn't in the cards for either guy unless we have an injury at RB.
