Letting Georgetown makes no sense due to what the Big East gets academically and with Basketball, and to add to what Rich mentioned it isn't out of the realm of possibility that Villanova will eventually get added as well in football. I still can't believe that the Big East let Notre Dame get away with not being in their football conference
That makes the most sense, but nothing really makes sense anymore. The NCAA is getting one step closer to becoming irrelevant. Too many schools are good in one sport and bad in others. Conferences should not be made up, where a school has to join for all sports. TCU has no business being in the Big East basketball wise, they are going to get destroyed night in and night out, even Rutgers and South Florida are 10x better than they are. Basketball should have its own conferences, Football its own. The Big East is a total mess.
TCU is after the money for the other sports, they know that the Big least badly needed them to keep their conference relevant.
Not reall a college bball expert but how would they be able to pull off an 18 teams division!? that said I hate that TCU is going to the Big EAST! Ncaa really is a big fat joke.
I just hate G-town, But the word is they will go for one more and have divisions. I agree ND has been let have it's way for far too long and the BE should correct that. They will never join for football but since they add a lot of cred to the rest of the league in academics as well in level of competition I don't see them having their options forced by the BE.
I assume they would split the 18 teams up into divisions. I don't know. That's the talk however. Of course, the BIG EAST has made puzzling decisions in the past so who knows... 17 all-sports teams doesn't make a lot of sense, but neither does encouraging Villanova to play major college football. I just got a call from a person at Middle Tennessee thinking they're heading to C-USA because administration at MTSU seem to think UCF is next. (and MTSU has always been rumored to be C-USA first choice for expansion should someone leave). It's all smoke.
There will be 10 schools in the Big Twelve. There have been 11 schools in the Big Ten for years. This is hardly the first misnomer.
I look at this as a preventative move by the BE. They know the Big 10 will come calling eventually so when it happens at least they can now have some protection. The Big 12 (I mean Texas) wants nothing to do with TCU so they'll be safe in that regard howver it's no secret that Rutgers, Syracuse and Pitt would be in the crosshairs of Big 10 expansion. I wonder if this increases or decreases Nova's chances of moving up or the Catholic Schools forming their own league. Schools like Providence and Seton Hall can't be happy with this as their costs have just gone up.
I really hate this from a basketball standpoint. The big east has (in the last 3-5 years) been the best conference for college basketball and I wish that things wouldnt change either with an added team or in teams getting snatched up big the big ten. It will destroy the competitiveness of the best basketball conference in the land and thats a shame.
Probably time to blow up the whole NCAA and start from scratch. As a basketball fan who doesn't care a whole lot about college football, it's horrible what they've done to what was a great basketball conference.
Get away with it? ND needs the Big East for football like the Yankees need revenue sharing. ND football is a different animal even though the performance on the field says otherwise. They'd go to the Big Ten IF they ever joined a conference and that's not happening anytime soon as long as NBC keeps that sweetheart TV deal going for them.
As I said about a month ago in this thread TCU brings the most credibility right away for football, hands down. The Big East most likely could care less about how TCU fares in hoops as the conference has plenty of other great programs that generate a ton of revenue and could absorb a middle of the pack hoops team much sooner than they could a mediocre football program. This move was much more about the football impact than anything else.
The issue the Irish could face is if and when the Big East goes away in football. Should that happen no conference will allow the deal the Irish have with the Big East. They'll either be forced to join as a full member or stay inependent which would leave them out in the cold when these 16 team conferences move away from the NCAA and form their own system. I'm sure they'll always be an open seat at the table for them but the day will come that their luxury ride will need to be traded in for a hoopty.
That day may come but it's nowhere on the immediate horizon where the NCAA completely disbands. The Irish make around $9 million a year just from their NBC contract. I'm sure they could fund all of their other sports including basketball as an independent and still be fine. I personally always thought they should've joined the Big 10 because of the longstanding rivalries there; but monetarily speaking I think they'll be fine as an independent.
Feeling is pretty much mutual now that the Knicks have rejoined the NBA. I can watch a bunch of illiterate dropouts play in a park for free if I want to watch "amateur" ball.
What I mean is them having them basically double dipping, allowing them the sweetheart TV deal (it is only good if they are good, no one wants to watch a mediocre football team every other week when other games are on) and still get the Big East bowl tie-ins even when they are just so-so, and ND needs the Big East for all of their other sports. And ND's TV contract is becoming obsolete in comparison to what the SEC and the Big Ten are bringing in, a reason why Nebraska was happy to leave for the Big Ten over the Big XII
