I've been reading a few threads on us blitzing and it's correlation with sacks. The one thing not being mentioned is that with our Blitzes, getting a sack is secondary or even Tirtiary. Fact of the matter is our blitz is meant to: -Get Pressure on the QB -Occupy players that would normally run patterns -Force shorter throws and if we get a sack...kewl beans. When I hear Guntcessa or other pundits tying our blitzing to NOT sacking the QB, it just screams that they have no concept of what we are trying to accomplish and why we blitz. If you rewatch the games and just look at our blitzes the 1st thing that comes to mind is, Why the hell are we showing them our blitzes!!? Simply because we WANT them to keep people in to block, it's part of our scheme. They have to because the numbers say so. There was actually a thread started prior to the Playoffs HERE in which ESPN broke down our quantity of Blitzing last year and mention our "pressures". If you read the numbers, it really has nothing to do w/ actually sacking the QB.
Good points, and pressure is definitely important, although I don't really know if our blitz has even created pressure. In some cases it's been completely ineffective this year. I would like to see them find a way to upgrade the rush this year. I think our rush will improve down the stretch now that Pace finally seems healthy, but we'll see. -X-
Thanx and I Absolutely agree, a pass rush just makes our D that much more effective. If that would mean 1 less blitzer which = 1 more man in coverage...that's just gravy.
It's true that it may not look as if we are getting pressure in the form of knock downs or pressure, but look at the completion % of qbs we have faced. I believe we are #1 in the league. That means they are thinking about who is coming and where they are coming from more than they are thinking about where to throw, which is just as good I'd not better than actual physical pressure.
no doubt it does tie up blockers, but the Pats have the ability to quickly chip with a TE and get the ball away quickly...I say show that blitz and drop random guys back into coverage. Let's see if Jason Taylor can pick off Brady by faking rush and dropping to cover a passing lane. The jets need to bring or draft a legit pass rushing DE next season.
The problem is our blitzes are not getting presure(at least until the other night), they are not accomplishing those goals you listed. Sacks are overrated, pressures count more and we are not pressuring the QB consistently enough.
Agreed. Organized chaos is what is being accomplished but......lately the secondary is NOT jumping some of these ducks you see opposing QB's throwing to the hot routes due to QB pressures. It's bizzare. You see the pass and feel automatic pick. But the corner barely gets there in time. Great tackles are being made though. But it's frustrating to watch.
we might not be getting sacks, but we are forcing bad throws. opposing QBs are completing just 50% of the passes against us (best in the NFL i believe)
The QBs we play against have a shorter internal clock than an average game due to our defense, causing them to get rid of the ball quicker. It always pisses me off when people say things like "we can't get pressure without blitzing" because they obviously have no idea what our scheme is. Glad you made a thread about it.
The one thing I will say about our blitzing is that I hate when we send 6 or 7 and can't penetrate the line. When we send the house we should be raping QB's
I have tried to make these points in multiple threads, well done. Everything you listed is why the Pats offense will struggle against this D. You either keep two guys into block or you get your QB hit on every play. Neither of those things bodes well for an offense based on spreading the field. any argument that the Jets blitzes still aren't accomplishing their goals can easily be negated by looking at opposing QB's completion percentages.
Comp % tells part of the story, who cares that QBs had low comp %s in Cle and vs. Hou? our D still nearly blew those games. Our D is not getting enough pressure on the QB to make them throw early or force them into bad decisions. Remember, last year game 1 vs. NE we harrassed Brady all game but in the rematch he tore us apart.
Because if they had completed more passes the offense would have moved the ball more and maybe put up more points? They let up some bad drives at the end, it happens. The risk you run when you blitz a lot is sometimes your going to get beat. The defense consistently lets up low point totals which is the real key. All the other stuff is nice but at the end of the day it's about letting up as few points as possible, something the Jets defense has done consistently all season.
I agree with this thread. What I see is when the Jets blitz, they seem to clog the middle of the line. Rarely do the jets try to speed rush around the tackles but simply push the pocket onto the QB. If everyone does their job what it does is it impairs the QB's vision a bit. He tries to heave a ball downfield or of he wants to escape he has a longer way to get out by going AROUND the tackles. I mean it's nice to get sacks but I like it when the QB seems to get desperate and just chuck the ball away.
There are many factors involved, if those extra completions were 2-3 yd completions it didn't matter but if the 50-55% completed passes are down field or big plays on 3rd downs then that hurts us. I get that we have the tools to have a great D but our d has been a major disappointment this year.
Im not gonna argue anything else besides what I highlighted. But I have to disagree 'to some extent' on the sacks part. Yes, sacks my not be the primary objective while getting pressure may be. But when u get pressure on the QB, thats when you are more likely to get sacks/ints. We are 28th in the league in ints (7) and 12th in sacks (24 sacks). If getting pressure means less sacks but more ints, then we are not doing our job. If it means more sacks, but less ints, we still aren't doing our job with the blitzes. Our blitzes have been ineffective. I don't need the stats to tell me that. I watch the games. Teams have started to pick our blitz apart, and it has been obvious ever since Grandpa Favre's second half against us. They are all getting jammed the LOS. We need more outside safety blitz from players like Ihedigbo. He's probably our best pass rusher right now. If we can't pressure Brady to make some errant throws, then we are in for a long day. I hope Rex has saved his best for them.
The most important thing about the Jets' blitzing packages is that other QBs are left off balance. They do not know when we will bring the house or when we will drop 8 guys into coverage. Whether the blitz itself works better than dropping back is not as important as keeping other teams and their QBs off balance. Manning or Brady would pick us apart if they had all day to sit in the pocket without worrying that we might just send nine guys after the QB.
I don't care about sacks. But our defense just hasn't been getting consistent pressure like it was in 2009. They are picking up the house blitzes, because they know it's coming 80% of the time. Someone said it earlier in the season - the beauty of the blitz is in it's surprise element. If we had an athletic NT who could consistently break through double teams and a 300 pound beast at blindside DE in the vein of a Seymour or *sniffle* Suh, this defense would go from dangerous to legendary, because the 5 man blitz would be less of a gimmick and more of a killing blow. I've been saying this since the end of last season - Rex is using smoke and mirrors to mask his lack of a dominant pass rush.
Stats aside, we ain't getting enough out of our pass rush. If we were really harassing the opposing QB's we'd see a lot more ints. & sacks. I think the loss of Jenks hurts us here...more than we'd like to admit.
