I want to add something, I'm here to compliment, not troll, I watched the game yesterday and what I'm seeing in the Jets,is a TEAM, I spent many a decade following the Pats, and spent a lot of time watching them lose a lot more than they won. What I'm seeing in the Jets is what I saw in the Pats early in 2001 and thru the decade, a team who plays as a team and finds ways to pull out wins. The Pats super bowl runs, especially 2003 and 2004, came down to last minute drives most of the time. I'm just saying, I'm seeing a Jets team that's clicking. A Winis a Win, great win yesterday for you guys, not so much for me, I missed the TD, I wasalready thinking you lost it. See you in two weeks.
Are we good enough to win it all? - Yes. But I would say that there are about 6 -7 teams that could also do it. For the first time in years, no one team is standing out as being 'the team' to beat. I'm getting a little bit sick of the lucky tag BS. A win is a win and when it counts, we are getting it done. I don't care how its done, but it is what it is. The Jets are winners. :jets:
Couldn't agree more. I'm waiting for the day that some opposing team scores and does the "airplane" to mock the Jets. It's pretty silly and embarrassing to watch.
I'm sorry but I like the Airplane celebration. It means we scored...shit we're the Jets...you rather us act like a Dolphin, Buffalo, or some patriot guy? We won!!! some people are just never happy
New England, Pittsburgh, Miami, Chicago... Hopefully the Jets are just playing down to their competition right now, because those are 4 very tough games in a row to wrap up the season with. One thing's for sure, the Pats are going to be there every last step of the way so the Jets-Pats game is critical.
The only thing that's bugging me is the penalties. That's just mental weakness that could make the difference between a title and not, if it continues. It's not improving over the season, which is concerning. I was fine with the airplane celebration though.
Yeah because our defense was so terrible against Brady the first time or Aaron Rodgers a few weeks back. overreact much? Defense played great yesterday until the 4th quarter.
I think being the #1 seed really hedges our bets at getting back to the AFCC game. I really do. If we have it at our place; that hedges our bets at being the superbowl team. Other than that, there are no guarantees in this league.
Imo the OP's post really contained two points, one being current problems with the team, the other the related but different point about the long term prospects. Yes, we will soon enough get the answer to the second one, that being provided by the December schedule. And also I prefer to take the season one game at a time. But on the first point, yeah, there's definitely some problems. I love that the Jets are winning, but I am one of those who says you cut it close too often, and it will eventually go against you. I was hoping that the Houston game was one that the Jets could win comfortably. Not so. I am still waiting for the D to put games away, and for the team not to make mistakes like Greene's ridiculous fumble. The good news I think is that Ryan may say a win is a win, but he knows better than any of us that there is a need for much work with the D. Perhaps the OP's point I most agree with and am concerned about is you look at Revis and Cromartie, and they are probably the best cb tandem in the league, but the rest of the secondary scares no one. And where was the pash rush? MIA. I had no idea the Texans had such good pass protection. Well, it looked like they did, but really the Jet pass rush, meaning lack thereof, was what you were really seeing. I hope in the short run that the secondary can improve, keeping with coverage schemes, but I frankly think the pass rush is unlikely to improve much from this roster.
I think that right now, based on the level of play over the last 5 weeks I would say the Jets will not go very deep in the playoffs. However; thinking back to where they were at this point in the season last year - I would have said no way in hell they even make the playoffs. As others have said - there is no one team that is playing consistently lights out. The Steelers have at times, looked dominant and at times looked pretty average. Same for the Pats. Aside from those 2 teams, there is really nobody else in the AFC that scares me. The Jets need to figure out how to cover the middle of the field or they are going to get prison raped by Hernandez, Gronkowski,Welker and Woodhead in a couple weeks.
For those expressing no concern, the skeptics are not arguing that the wins somehow do not count. The point is that the way the Jets are playing is not a great portent for a championship team. Overall, hey simply haven't shown anything that makes them more likely than the other 5 playoff teams (assuming no huge collapse) to make it to the Super Bowl.
Its funny you say that as the commentary team over here (UK) said pretty much the same thing. I agree, I think that the work ethic and culture has now shifted and is the tip of the iceberg of something great. Maybe not a dynasty, but the solid foundations for success for a few years to come.
I really hope you're right. It almost bothers me to see his press conferences after some of these wins. There just doesn't seem to be a huge sense of urgency for this team to play better each week.
Rex talked about every single team bringing their A game when they face us. The entire league hates us, they hate the brash talk, and hate that Rex says we are the best team in the league. Week in, Week out we keep getting teams "A" game and find ways to win. That's all that matters. Texans for instance have the number rusher, and are a top tier passing team. Up until about the 12 minute mark in the 4th we held them to 7 points. The same thing happened against the Vikings, our defense has to learn how to close these game out. We aren't lucky at all, missed FG's, fumbles that change the flow of the game, dropped passes, penalties, and yet we still find ways to win. We are certainly good enough to win it all, look at last year we had a great December. This year when our defense starts playing like it should we have a great offense to go with it.
Last year at this time I thought it was impossible for us to make the post season. Last year the Saints lost the last 3 games of the season to mostly piss poor teams. Last year the Chargers won 10 straight going into the postseason. It's impossible to tell right now. There are things to like and things to be concerned about. We just have to have faith and hope that the good keeps progressing and the mistakes get fixed. We are in better position to get there than the Vikings, Cowboys and Bengals.
More importantly, from what I read in the paper, the D players themselves aren't feeling good. I saw quotes from Leonhard, Pace and others saying they need to get their shit together.
I see multiple symptoms stemming from a single cause. I put them together on my own liberty. 1)/4) I see two glaring needs in the defense - as anybody on this board does - in pass-rushing OLB and a safety. I believe top-notch safety can be had in the later rounds (like Sherry) and good DL later, but pass-rushing OLB cannot be had in the later rounds. 2) Penalties were bothering the hell out of me too. Somebody should hold the team accountable. (That means you, Rex) 3)/5) Look what the defense has been doing: When Keller lines up at the TE spot, on I formation usually, the defense does two things: they load up the box (1) and make sure they jam Keller as much as they can (2). Two birds with one stone sort of deal. If it is a run, so what. They loaded up the box for a reason. If it was a pass, it's still just a good, as Keller has been rendered useless in the play. I think, to mitigate this, Jets need to diversify their play calls. No more 1st down run/2nd down pass shit. When the defense is loading up the box on 1st down, sprinkle some screen passes and play actions. Another thing I would like to see is to move Keller around - from TE spot initially, then far out to the split end in a pre-snap motion, etc. forcing the defense to go with undesirable match-up. In short - they must stop being predictable, like they are now. 6) As we are predominantly run-first team, even defensive backs would be preoccupied with stopping the run. (That's what I think is the cause for the lack of awareness.) Obviously Sanchez (and Schotty for that matter) needs to do better in that spot, but won't be as critical (I didn't say this isn't critical.) as other problems.
