On my way to school on the bus, I all of a sudden had a curious thought that kept me scratching my head. The thought that perplexed me was this: teams that are lethal in the red zone have one common element of offense that the defense just cannot ignore. That element is... the fade pattern. Like... Randy Moss at the corner end of the EZ, tip-toes as he grabs the ball and goes out of bound, etc. Hell, Pennington, with his all physical limitations and woes, was a master of fade route that made Coles look like a perennial pro bowler (that he never was.) And Coles wasn't even physicall dominant WR either. Jets now have two very, VERY good target in Braylon Edwards and Dustin Keller. So far, 9 games into the season, I have seen a grand total of <<0>> fade patterns to them either in the end zone or toward the side line for big chunk of gain. I just do not understand why Jets offense is not establishing the fade route at all. It is because of this threat that forces the defender to stand off the WR, toward the sideline. If Braylon Edwards (or any tall receiver that knows how to shield the thrown ball from the defender) gets his step on the defender toward the sideline for the fade, it's a guaranteed TD. So, if the defender is forced to guard the sideline, that in turn opens up the middle - Yes. That's when you call slant. All in the simple scheme of taking what the defense gives you. Thoughts?
we used to run the fade every single time we got into the redzone and it almost never worked. It pissed me off, and I'm glad we don't have to see that failure anymore. Not a bad play to try once and a while though.
Like I said, I haven't seen a single fade call at all this season. Calling fade in every red zone chance is stupid, as you said. All I was trying to say was, that simply letting the defense know there is a threat toward the sideline is more than enough to open up the middle for the slant - you know, the kind of work process I just never see with Schotty's offense. Frankly speaking, I don't even know what the point of the motions is in Schotty's offenses these days. Motion or not, the defense is not even flinching. There Schotty has failed whatever deception he was trying to pull.
I agree about the fade.. the only times I recall them trying it this year, Edwards scored a TD against the Pats and drew a PI penalty agains the Fins. Couldn't hurt to try it once in a while.. nothing else really seems to be working too well when the Jets get close to the End Zone.
It's funny, the people who bitch that Schottenheimer won't call enough slant routes are exactly the same people who whine when Sanchez can't fit the ball into a tight window and throws an interception. You can't have it both ways.
Schotty is a pretty bad OC. Where i watch other teams who run the same 15-20 plays great out of different formations, it seems the Jets run 30-40 plays that work good. I don't like Mark Sanchez as a QB and he shouldn't be throwing 30 plus times a game, but the kid has way more on his plate then most QB's. We run too many passing plays.
you don't like Sanchez as a QB?? do you think he would benefit the Jets organization better...if he was selling hotdogs on the mezzanine level?
I'm not sure what the heck you even mean by this, but the Jets are 3rd in the league in rushing attempts and 17th in passing attempts.
Yes, we do run slants. WTF man? I can't believe all the BS I'm reading on here today. I'm going to have to go back and do an analysis on all the games I have DVR'd to do some myth busting.
not me. I know Sanchez can fire it in there. I've seen him do it. I've been calling for slants since last year, when he did throw them late in the year, he started to grow and did well in January.
You don't like Sanchez? I guess the fanbase needs the small handful of fans that don't like the QB and look foolish at the end of the day. I bet there are fans who don't like Brady in New England, and there must be Manning haters in Indy.
Tell me where you find that goal to go, WR cut under the DB for a free grab... Do we throw it occasionally...sure...Is it the staple it should be...hardly. Go back and look at the chart you posted earlier...Att btwn 1-10 yards........55/90. That number should be much higher, and it has alot to do with the underneath play calling.
I would bet that it has more to do with Sanchez not being consistently accurate and being a 2nd year QB than it does the play calling. We will see.
Mick never said Sanchez was....he merely pointed out that Brady and Manning are important to their franchises as is Sanchez to the Jets....and how there are always a handful of morons who don't appreciate their team's franchise QBs. learn to read.
See, I see it the other way...Much of the short routes are Outs, forcing him to go all the way to the outside, and not nearly enough breaking underneath(towards the middle) on a 3 step drop type routes.
Yes you have and you have forgotten them. Early in the year the Jets scored a few td's on fade patterns. The TD that Braylon got a taunting penalty was a fade. I think it was against the Pats but I'm not sure. The first 3-4 weeks of the year I know we had at least 2 maybe even more fade passes for TD's. Here is one. http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2010091911/2010/REG2/patriots@jets#tab:watch
