It was definitely a low risk play, but he didn't underthrow it on purpose.....he gave his guy a chance to make a play knowing that worst case scenario the D gets good field position.
I certainly don't think that it was designed for Sanchez to throw a pick, but the coaching staff definitely called for a deep ball knowing that an INT would essentially serve as a good punt.
It was a low risk, high reward pass. There is zero chance it was intended to be an INT, but an INT wasn't a bad outcome. The other outcomes were catch, pass interference or incomplete. Good decision/call.
By Sanchez, probably. He probably thought, "well, the heave is a plus because its like a punt." I've actually done the same playing QB in pickup football. 4th and long? Throw it deep and find the fool who won't bat it down.
Not an intentional pick, but on third down, a catch is ideal, but a pick isn't a bad result, per se. More of a calculated risk than a pick by design.
I don't think so. You don't design an INT. You look at it as a win win, but don't count on the pick. Am incompletion isn't great, but you have to ttry to make the catch.
it's a play where you go into it knowing the risk & reward. If it's a little higher, there's a chance of either a catch inside the 5 (possibly a TD), a PI giving you the ball inside the 5, or an INT pinning them inside the 5 (or possibly at the 20 if it happens in the EZ)
you don't try and throw a pick. the play call was a good one though. lob it up and hope braylon makes a play or gets a flag. worse case scenario is an INT. just make sure you tackle the guy which shouldn't be hard on a ball like that. BTW, that kid joe haden was very impressive today. they tried to make big plays on the rookie and he had good coverage most of the game.
It works in this day and age, where players have low football IQs and high desires to rack up stats. How often do we see DBs who should knock down the ball, but take the pick instead?
That pick sure looked like it was on purpose, just like when you miss a free throw in basketball. Worked to perfection too. Got me thinking......... But i know its not,
I honestly believe if the coordinator doesn't tell his players or coach up his players to do it, then it doesn't get done. Whats funny about that is when I play backyard football, and the opposing team has to throw it deep to score on 4th down, my team always tells each other to just knock it down and don't pick it off.
It's obviously not designed as an INT, but the idea that it's better than a punt certainly plays into the playcall. 3 out of 4 things that could happen are net positives--a catch, a flag, an interception, or an incompletion. Those are good odds in your favor.
Maybe because it was third...I don't know. There needs to be some level of accountability. You don't pick off that ball. Maybe the Wonderlic results do say something. DBs never do that well.
