Sanchez looked horrible through 3 and 3/4 quarters. While he has clearly improved his pocket presence, ability to roll out and step up in the pocket - his accuracy and progressions had been poor for 2 1/2 games. Teams have recognized this and shut down our running game looking to make Sanchez beat them. Even the weakest NFL teams against the run can shut down strong running teams if they are willing to sell out to do it. After a horrible 56 minutes, Sanchez ran three straight successful two minute offenses. His pocket presence was good, he found the open receiver, he set his feet and threw decisively. I think this is strong evidence that the bigger problem with the offense is Schotty rather than Sanchez. I think Schotty is focused on creating mismatches, which is fine, but he is creating offensive confusion in the attempted creation of those mismatches and then has Sanchez focused on the potential mismatch rather than just finding the open receiver. When you simplify the offense to just find the open receiver, Sanchez seems to excel. It also seems to bring the Sanchez to Keller connection to the forefront. That connection seems to lead to success across the board.
I think that the bigger problem with the offense still tends to be the second year franchise QB being inconsistent. I also think that changing coordinators could potentially prevent him from achieving consistency in the next year or two. We all know that young QB's can be ruined by many things and I think turmoil in the coaching staff is one the tends to be overlooked by Jets fans that want Schotty gone. I say let Sanchez and Schotty work and grow together instead of sending Schotty packing and forcing Sanchez to start over with someone else. For all the issues we all see with the offense it is still getting the job done and even shows flashes of being a dominant unit. While the team as a whole is having success I think the best course of action is patience.
I don't think Schotty should be fired. I think he should cut out most of the pre snap movement and let Sanchez focus on finding the open receiver. F**k the match up. If he does that, what he has put together should work and work well. H*ll yes I'm excited about this week.
Schotty needs to let go of Sanchez's balls. That's what he needs to do. You see how much better Sanchez is when he has free reign to just get the job done. Let him take chances. We have a great defense, that's the best reason to just say, do what you have to do. If you grab him by the balls and call these dink and dunk plays, it stalls the whole offense and causes them to never get into a rhythm. Also for the love of God, throw to Dustin Keller! We see how good this offense is when Sanchez throws to him.
Say what you want about Schotty, but the two minute drill that the Jets executed to tie yesterday's game was beautifully scripted. If you're gonna blame him for 3 quarters of lackluster playcalling, you have to give him some credit for outmaneuvering the Lions coaching staff down the stretch.
you can tell on some plays sanchez is trying to force it to a receiver. my impression is that its shottys insistence. also, they need to start throwing to keller more.
You really think the coordinator is insisting he not go through his reads and force it into coverage?
Of course not but it has the same result if he has to put more thought into formations, pre snap movement, positioning proper matchups and knowing exactly what all those match ups are for every offense and defense alignment possibility then finding the open receiver.
It's obvious after the last two games that there's a problem with the offensive scheme. At the midway point of the season, this team should be clicking on both sides of the ball. There's enough talent to streamline the playcalling. Let them play.
Sanchez hasn't had an issue telling Schotty what he thinks works or sucks. He got Schotty to drop the kill calls after week one and he got him to continue running the spread hurry up in overtime yesterday. If the shifts and motions were to blame for Sanchez struggling to read defenses I think he would say something about it. Sanchez is inconsistent right now and we have to take the good with the bad. I don't think that the play calling was all that different between the Pats, Dolphins and Bills games and the last few games when the offense struggled. I think Sanchez hasn't been as good. Of course Schotty also could have made better play calls to put Sanchez in a better position too. Like I said they both need to grow together and keep working until they can get the offense working the way everyone wants it to.
I think we got a good show yesterday of what Sanchez can be if it all comes together. Those bits and pieces of very good games make us want/believe that Sanchez can put a complete game together. I hope it comes soon.
Yea I dont really like what Schotty is doing but as much as we hope for Sanchez to improve we should hope that Brian does. He has all these new weapons on O and a 2nd year Qb and he is learning on what he can and cant do as well. He is a smart guy and knows his offensive schemes but he needs to realize we have a 2nd year QB and learn how to use all his players.
Shottenhiemer has been the Jets Offensive coordinator for 5 years...how long should we allow him to "grow"? And if it's true that the playcalling hasn't changed from week to week...doesn't that in and of itself show an unwillingness to adapt to the opponent and exploit their weaknesses? Granted, Sanchez has been under him for 2 years, but one can make the argument that if anything, Shottenhiemer's scheme has hampered Sanchez's development. He's not asking for a more complicated scheme, is he? Sure, Sanchez has been inconsistent, but he's been consistently better when he's been allowed play to his strengths. The last 4 minutes of yesterday's game illustrates a lot in my opinion. I'm not calling for Shottenhiemer to be fired. But nearly 6 quarters of football without a touchdown tells me that there's a better approach than what the Jets are doing offensively. It's either the play calling or the execution, or a combination of both. Most think it's primarily the scheme, and I tend to agree.
There is no way you are going to bring up 6 quarters without a touchdown and blame the scheme for that when the Jets dropped 9 passes in the GB game and another one or two before they got on the board against Detroit. To your point about Schotty "growing", when I say that I mean that he needs to continue to adjust his offense to Sanchez and build it around him. As Sanchez matures Schotty can grow the offense to fit his style. Your right that he has been here for 5 years and is the one common denominator in any offensive struggles those past 5 years. Nobody seems to talk about the QB carousel he has had to deal with while running this offense. These last two years are the first time he has had any type of stability at the position and I think the benefits of that stability are just starting to show through.
Agreed, up to a point. They've had two preseasons and over 25 games together. Credit the defense for keeping us in games while Schotty and Sanchez finish their honeymoon...
Lol, the honeymoon is over and both are certainly open to criticism. Most people say it takes 3 years for a QB to fully understand an offense in the NFL. Sanchez is in the middle of year two so we can't possibly expect that he is running the offense as efficiently as he will eventually be able to. When Sanchez was drafted the team committed to developing him and I think it would be harmful to his development to change coordinators at this point. We have seen how well Schotty can scheme for opposing teams when he has a QB capable of taking advantage of all the eccentricities of his offense. Right now it pisses us off because it throws Sanchez off but I don't know that we will be saying that in a year or two. Basically, we committed to Sanchez for at least 3 years and I think it would be unfair to all involved to not stay committed to Schotty for those 3 years, especially when they are a winning team with Schotty and Sanchez running the show. Not that you would think that from reading the threads about the offense.
