Coleman was awful yesterday, and he'll have days where he can get abused. Such is the life of a mediocre NFL cornerback. But there's a reason he's stuck this long, he's a fast, tough kid, who is one of the surest tacklers in our secondary. His coverage skills have always been sketchy, from Mark Bradley to Austin Collie to Nate Burleson.
I will never understand the "we're spoiled by Revis and Cro" or the "well he'a s 3d CB" arguments. I think both are red herrings. What he is, is a National Football League player earning more money than most of us to play a damn game. And he doesn't play well. Now, he hasn't been horrific this year as in others, but he is a clear liability and shitty play is shitty play, regardless where you are on the depth chart or who else is with you on the field.
Coleman got burned badly. However, he's the third CB. Jets can't have a dominant player @ every position on the field. Rex obviously sees #30 being being torched all over the field. If he had someone better, he'd make that substitution immediately. Jets blitz & know the risks. They need to get to the qb before he can connect w/ his #3 receiver. If the Jets can't hide Coleman then they need to adjust their blitzes or blitz less. Coleman's abilities are not a surprise. The Jets coaching staff fully knows his limits by now. ==== Think for a sec on whether it's easy is it to replace Coleman ... Jets used their #1 round pick on what many considered a promising CB. Kyle Wilson was making Coleman look like Darrell Green. CB are not easy to get. The Jets constantly blitz & put their CB under pressure. Jets need a third CB which is unlikely to happen ... or the Jets need a pass rusher so they don't need to blitz so much to get pressure which is unlikely to happen. This is the Jets D. The blitz has to reach the qb, otherwise Coleman gets burned.
a 3rd CB going against the other teams 3rd WR. and he is getting torched. only as good as your weakest link.
The point is when you have Revis and Cro out on the field with Drew Coleman who do you think the QB is going to be looking to exploit. If we didnt have such stud CBs at 1 and 2 then Drew wouldnt be targeted as much.
Moving foward, would it hurt the Jets D if/when Coleman gets torched to TRY Wilson and/or Pope against the slot reciever? I mean, maybe they matchup better than Coleman against a particular reciever. Just a thought.
I'm ready to end the drew Coleman experiment after this season. He had a few decent games but this week was pretty ugly. Anyone know how Donald Strickland is doing? I still wish we would have kept that guy. He was perfect for the nickel if only he could stay healthy.
Coleman is Coleman. He had a couple of good games but isn't going to get it done consistently, so no one here should even expect it. He's a dime-at-best CB and I said it when everyone here was riding his jock Weeks 3-6. The more discouraging thing is that K. Wilson has had a horrible season.
Rewatched the game........... Hot garbage is being nice. I was referring to the one Burleson throw. Coleman is just as bad as Wilson in not looking back. Look at the play Revis made yesterday on the first throw to Johnson. Revis actually got beat at the line but his head was looking at the QB the entire time.
Johnson beat Revis off the line but he closed in on him like a missile. It was a perfect throw by Stafford but Revis made a better play.
Yes I agree...............All reports say Coleman is among the fastest player on the Jets, if not the fastest. So speed isn't the issue. My point of the video was, watch Revis's head. He was looking at the QB/ball 2/3 of the time. Cromartie does that sometimes, Wilson/Coleman/Lowery almost never.
Yeah, hopefully Wilson gets it down because even through his struggles he wasn't getting burned that badly. He did a decent job of staying with his man but couldn't locate the ball, that's why he got beat on back shoulder throws so often.
I do no think it is all Coleman's fault. These complations usually come on 3rd down....and what do we do every damn 3rd down? We blitz like crazy, it is predictable as hell. SO the middle of the field is left abandoned because all out LBs are gunning for the QB and the QB needs to make a quick throw....well we give it to him, because the slot receiver is given all the room he needs to get open...it is predictable as hell. The reason Coleman is in there is because Wilson and Lowery were not getting the job done, and the reason for that is the way the D is being called. Sometimes Rex needs to realize that we got to 3rd and long by just playing Defense....so why not just play defense for one more play and get the offense off the field?
N. Burleson was just killing Him You took the words right out of my mouth. I don't usually throw players under the bus & Coleman has played well this year but i thought the Coaches should have pulled him & try Lowery or Wilson cause N. Burleson was killing us.
#Jets CBs Revis & Cromartie gave up 4 catches for 44 yds vs Lions. Drew Coleman was picked on: Gave up 6 catches for 101 yds, TD. #nfl #nyj
I would much rather see our first round pick out there doing this. Even if he's getting burned at least he has a much higher ceiling and can learn from it. He's not learning to locate the ball in coverage from the sideline. I don't understand.
A more pressing issue is why wasn't Cromartie on Burleson? Burleson's clearly their 2nd best receiver and Cro was being wasted on Bryant Johnson? I don't get it. Rex has made some questionable defensive decisions this year.
I don't think Cromartie has played much nickel corner since he was drafted - I'm not sure he's be a whole lot better in that position in a pinch like they needed. I would have preferred Revis on Burleson and Cromartie on Megatron.
