Watching the Colts/Texans game, Jets pass rush is weak

I think I had largely forgotten what a traditional pass rush looks like when executed to perfection before watching the first quarter of the Colts/Texans game tonight. Every passing down, 4 or 5 defenders are instantly obliterating the pocket and forcing incredibly rushed throws or generating sacks.

The Jets pass rush simply does not get any heat on the QB without sending 6 or 7+. Obviously I am not making a particularly novel observation here, but this week's Monday Night game puts our problem into a startling context. There's no more time for screwing around - next year we have to draft pass rushing DL.

Both teams are putting on a pass rush clinic tonight.

Jets havent hard a good pash rusher since John Abraham. We all thought Pace was going to be the guy but he has been solid but he will rarely ever beat his man. Most of his sacks are coverage sacks. We also drafted Goulston to be that guy as well and you know how that is working out....

Year 4 is Gholston's breakout year.

Man do I ever wish we had the Texans D. Dude, you can't be serious. I can't believe the # of people around here bitching about the D. They've allowed a TOTAL of 19 points in both of our losses. They were awesome yesterday! Isn't there a fire Schotty thread you should be contributing to?

I mean I get that our pass rush isn't the greatest, but we don't allow many points. Isn't that the point?

I love our D. I would take our D over the Texans' every day of the week. But there's no reason I can't admire their pass rush. With a single true, consistent pass rusher, our D would evolve from elite to historic.

I hear you. I probably should have re-read your post before responding...I took it for one of the 'our D is the problem threads.' My bad.

I agree that we need DL or pass rush help next year for sure. Our pass rush does seem to get there just a second late, but it does appear to be impact accuracy. I saw another post listing the QB rating of QBs that have played the Jets this year and it's pretty low.

But you're right, with more sacks/picks it would send the D to the next level.

    Texans allow 28 ppg

    Jets allow 15 ppg

It'd be cool to have a D-Wareish pass rusher to make our D historic, but I wouldn't call it weak...just average compared to the rest of our D.

Jets have 15 sacks in 7 games

Colts have 11 in 6 games

Texans have 10 in 6 games

What are our stats out of a 5-or-less man rush compared to those teams? Need to compare apples to apples.

Considering they're both 4-3 teams you're not comparing apples to apples no matter what.

    There's are 4-3....ours is 3-4

You don't expect to get sacks sending just our D-Line..like you do in a 4-3.

It's not comparable that way, our D is designed to blitz LBs/DBs while our line eats up blockers and penetrates.

We have 2 #1 corners on the outside so we don't have to send 4 and hold 7 in coverage...this D is built from the back to the front.

    edit: WSW beat me

Our numbers are outstanding against opposing QBs. We regularly make excellent QBs look average thanks to Rex's scheme and our incredible secondary. However, if we could rush 4 or 5 and get to the QB like many other teams do, I honestly think we would approach all-time great potential.

I am aware of this and I still feel that 5 v 5 is comparable whether it's 3 DL eating blocks plus 2 LBs or DBs or 4 DL rushing with 1 LB. I'm not saying or DL should have more sacks but that our 5 man rush is not particularly impressive.

Elite pass rushers are hard enough to find in a 4-3, when you talk about 3-4 elite OLB pass rushers - how many are there really? It's a very difficult combination of athleticism, speed and power required to be a Demarcus Ware type guy that can be a legit pass rushing threat as well as a good cover guy.

In a 3-4 you're getting pressure more with the scheme than you are with the athleticism of your players. That's why it's not an apples to apples comparison. It would obviously be great to find a dware type player for the Jets but the likelihood of that happening is not very good.

Having a defense that can rush with the front 4 is a lot sexier than a defense that is stout against the run and covers. Pass rushers don't grow on trees; I think Rex does a great job with what he has.

this is supporting the argument i made in another post....our defense is slightly above average because we do not have a dominant pass rusher that scares opposing teams! look at jared allen, dwight freeney, mario williams, clay matthews, osi....if we had a dominant pass rusher we wouldnt have to blitz 6 and 7 guys and get burned because we are in one on one coverage.....rex needs to stfu about the superbowl talk...its not realistic...superbowl teams are dominant on at least one side of the ball, and we arent dominant on either one...our offense is very weak, and our defense isnt super..its average as i said

This team needs to draft a legit pass rusher if it wants to have a historic D. I just hope we can keep all of the other pieces until that happens.

Did you see our defense play this week with #24 at 100%? Do you remember what they looked like last year at 100%? Our defense is much better than "slightly above average".

The only guy you mentioned that makes any sense is Clay Matthews. Every one of those other guys is a 4-3 DE. Much easier to find.
