I was a huge, huge Vinny fan so I'm certainly not objective, but I'm also of the mind that the season was only there for Vinny to throw away because of how he rallied the team to win games early. Everyone remembers the Miami MNF game, he did the same exact thing on a bit smaller scale in Week 2 vs New England, also home on a MNF. If not for those division/AFC wins the Baltimore game wouldn't have mattered at all. And we did put up a 14-0 lead against the 2000 Raven D which is hailed as one of the best of all time. Like Rex said yesterday about Ngata and Slauson, an opponent of that caliber is going to make you look bad at times. And while I don't absolve Vinny of fault in that game, perspective is necessary when discussing how we got there. It's the same thing as Patrick Ewing missing a finger-roll at the end of Game 7 vs Indiana. Everyone remembers that, few remember all he had to do over the first six games to even be in that position, including winning Game 5 with a last-second shot.
Groh did not have a # 1 WR. He had Cherbet, a rookie (Coles), and I don't even remember who else played WR that year. Was Jumbo Eliiot our WR3? It was no surprise that the Jets drafted a WR in round one the following year.
Yep and yet Vinny threw on average 39 times a game, that's bad coaching. That #1 pick WR didn't help us at all in 2001 as he spent the majority of the season hurt.
