If the Yankees really want Cliff Lee than they'll offer more money up front and over the length of the contract. In the end, it'll be too much money to pass up.

I said this morning, given that I'd never be in the position to make the decision, I'd let the actions of those fans dictate my decision. We're talking about the difference of a few million dollars. To me, the fact that they mistreated my wife knowing they were a month and a half away from courting me would be enough to make me say "Go f**k yourselves." Also, it's not like they were just taunting her, the original report said they were spitting on her (I don't know what anything says now.) Taunts are one thing, spitting on a person is a completely different story.

It's easy to say that when you'll never be in that position though. Think about it this way, do you play the Lotto every week, or do you throw away a buck only once or twice a year when the jackpot is astronomical because "Well, that's a lot of money" even though it's always a lot of money?

Leon's wife is an asshole, but what did Lee's wife ever do to anyone? I'd never even heard of her before this story broke.

    That sums it up.

Now if Texas makes an offer that's reasonably close, say within $10M of the total value of the contract, I can see Lee saying, "Thanks NY, but you can kiss my wife's ass" but otherwise, he's about to get the last big contract of his career. He's going to make his great-grandchildren as financially secure as he possibly can.

I agree with kh. Hughes is still a kid, and he didn't throw his best secondary pitch most of the time this year. Was that lack of confidence or pitch calls from the backstop? Either way, it's a fixable problem and once corrected, he's a very good starter, at least #3 worthy.

I'm not sure anyone blames Girardi directly for losing the ALCS. Decisions he made contributed to the loss, and if you deny that I'm not sure there's anything we can rationally discuss together.

Apart from that, his day-to-day in-game management is spotty. His micromanaging is an issue and I'm not sure how anyone can argue differently.

Does he deserve as much ire as someone like me gives him? Probably not. Then again, he doesn't deserve half the credit he gets from the opposite side for not being that bad. If we want to be honest, this team should be on auto-pilot the majority of the time. When Ron Washington stopped trying to overmanage his team in the ALCS they won. Joey Looseleafs might learn something from that.

Well if the Yankees trade Montero, it would be for a great player.

Probly a pitcher, which leaves a gaping hole at C. Cervelli is fine behind the plate, but his offense is not there.

I think they'd then fast-track Romine, knowing that even if it didn't work out they'd still have one more catching prospect to bring along at a reasonable pace.

Oh, and just wait till you start hearing about how badly Cervelli sucks. You just opened a big can of worms.

Blown out of proportion of course. They were standing three levels up and spitting on all the players families below. They didn't single her out and if they did they probably just aren't that good at spitting.

I know you didn't say it to begin with but Hughes first year as a starter was 4 years ago...jeez.

Of course it doesn't make it better but it also doesn't make it that they singled her out which you and the media would like people to believe.

what the fuck does it matter, she was spit on and had beer thrown at her.....the fact that it was random (like you're suggesting) makes it even more retarded.

Why should anybody (including fans) have to worry about getting spit on or worry about getting doused in beer...when they're trying to enjoy a game they paid money to see.

The entire going to a game experience is ruined by a small group of Neanderthals.

God forbid you have your kids with you.

Stupidity and Alcohol don't mix well.

If one those assholes assaulted (spitting is assault) my Wife or kid....I'd fuck them up.

I'm on the side that it doesn't matter who the fans were targetting, or even if they were particularly targeting anyone at all. It's the result that matters, not the intent. Again, the chances are good that Lee will be a Yankee, especially given what he and his wife have said in the past few days about the whole thing. They're looking at the potential paycheck and finding it hard for a little saliva that stinks of Bud Lite to make them say "Thanks but no thanks."

My only point is, if the Rangers (or Phillies, who were the other team Lee specifically said he'd go play for if not the Yankees) make an offer that is within just a few million over the life of the deal, I can see this whole incident being enough to make the Lees say "We can give up a few cars" and take their services to the other bidder.

Really, in the end, all these assholes did was make the seats they spit from more expensive. There's no way the Yankees don't put up whatever it takes to get Lee in pinstripes. For that, those cocksuckers should be perma-banned from the Stadium.

If it is and the Yankees really want him then they will just up their offer by 20 million or so. Kind of like with Sabathia when they went from 140 million to 160 and nobody else was even involved..it's only money, they will just print some more off.

No surprises here...Hopefully they can sign Wood back at a reasonable price and chalk the others up to your typical Cashman disasters.

"The Yankees declined 2011 options on first baseman-designated hitter Lance Berkman, reliever Kerry Wood and oft-injured first baseman Nick Johnson, and exercised their option on pitching prospect Andrew Brackman.

Berkman's option was for $15 million, Wood's for $11 million and Johnson's for $5.5 million.
