I never could figure out why Herm didn't become a college coach after the KC debacle. If nothing else it seemed like his schtick would definitely play better with college kids. I would guess as a recruiter/preacher he could've walked into most recruits homes and impressed the parents enough to hand their kids future over to him...

Joe Walton was OK. Herm Edwards was an absolutely HORRIBLE Head Coach. The team won in spite of him. The only thing I liked about Herm was that he gave me endless things to write about here. My posts have never been the same since he left.

Sometimes, lately, when I know Herm Edwards is going to be on ESPN, I will tune in for sort of a self-deprecating moment, thinking to myself, 'This moron actually held the position of Head Coach for the New York Jets for 5 years. 5 YEARS.' He just babbles like a child's toy uninterrupted for 5 minutes.

He looks like a shell of the man he once was, you know the one that ran CMart into the ground and ended his career....

I think Herm would be fantastic in this capacity.

It would have to be Walton, even though I think he had more talent to work with. But Herm was the kind of motivational speaker who sounds great, but has no f'ing clue when he finally does get the job, and just manages to drag everything down into a cesspit of mediocrity and malaise. (sounds familiar to me, can't quite put my finger on it...who do I have in mind? Hobbes, help me out here)

And Joe must go. Don't forget that.

Answering this question is like sniffing Roseanne Barr's asshole and trying to figure out if it smells better than a Bengal Tiger's asshole that has just eaten a Gazelle laxative.

:rofl:I love it. Joe Walton was ok even though he inherited a young team that was less than 30 minutes from the SB while the Jets won in spite of Herm despite getting BETTER after he took over.

Average carries per season under BP/Groh: 347
Average carries per season under Herm: 302

Yep, Herm ran him into the ground:rofl:

In the intrests to disclosure you should include Herm's tenure with the Chiefs.

It is harder to be a great coach when Parcells doesn't build your team for you.

The 1998 Jets were 30 minutes from a SB as well. Walton lost the sack exchange as they retired, Herm dismantled a very good 3-4 defense to bring in the Tampa 2 and the players he cut helped the Patsies win the SB.

Parcells didn't build those teams and they re-tooled TWICE after BP left.

The 2001 team was mostly holdovers, the '02 team revamped the D(thanks to BP's great job w/ the cap) and in '04 we had an almost completely new team outside of a few key guys.

2001 starters brought in by Parcells:

    Vinny
    Curtis
    Fabini
    Jenkins
    Mawae
    Thomas
    Young
    Farrior

    8 out of 22 starters

    In '02:
    Curtis
    Fabini
Machado(only started b/c Szott was out until decmber)
    Mawae
    Thomas
    Ferguson

    6 of 22 starters(really 5 as machado only played b/c of injury)

    In '04:
    Curtis
    Sowell
    Fabini
    Mawae

    4 of 22 starters

Let's look back at the '98 team for comparison in regards to holover players.

    Players acquired pre-Parcells:
    Chrebet
    Key
    Brady
    Jumbo
    O'Dwyer
    Mo
    Glenn
    Green

8 of 22 starters(would have been 9 had Marvin Jones not been hurt)

1998 was THREE years before Herm. The previous 2 we MISSED the playoffs and we were entering cap hell.

When Walton took over Gastineau was in his 5th year, Klecko was in his 7th year, Lyons 5th year, Salaam 8th year.

    Gastineau retired in 1988
    Klecko retired in 1988
Lyons retired following the '89 season
Salaam was the only guy he lost and he was least important of the 4

A very good 3-4 that didn't make the playoffs the previous 2 years.

He had to cut guys like Cox and Phifer b/c BP overpaid them. Especially Cox as he gave him a new deal right before he left- a deal he knew the Jets couldn't keep him w/ but he loved Bryan and paid him.

By the way, in 2000 we were 13th in PA. In '01 we were 12th, in '02 14th and '04 5th so our D's may not have been great(neither were our Ds under BP and BB) but they were good enough to make postseasons w/ Herm where they weren't w/o him.

Mo Lewis and Marvin Jones were starting for Edwards in 2001-2003.

You are forgetting the players that Parcells brought in as GM with Al Groh:

John Abraham (he was pretty good wasn't he)
    Sean "Big Cat" Ellis
Chad Pennington (even if he isn't better than O'Brien)
    Anthony Becht
    Laverneous Coles

You also forgot the guys that were here already that Parcells coached up:

    Wayne Cherbet
    Jumbo "Tackle eligible" Elliot
    Richie Anderson
    Gerald Sowell

In short, Herm inherited both of his starting QBs, his entire backfield (aside from Lamont Jordan), Cherbet and Coles at WR, and most of his offensive line from Parcells.

Even though he gutted his defense to install the Tampa 2, he still got both DEs and all of his starting LBs not named Sam Cowert from Parcells as well.
