Rex is a pretty smart guy. He knows about the media pressure in NYC and he knew his team would never be able to handle it if they weren't prepared for it. He's been screaming Superbowl since the day he got here, making the expectations high and getting the players used to it. Tomorrow morning when the newspapers start predicting a NY/NY superbowl and all the radio and TV media are doing the same, it isn't going to have any effect on these Jets. They expect it and unlike some teams of years past they will embrace it as their fearless leader wouldn't have it any other way. Now let's go get some god damn snacks.
The pressure is continuing to play at a high level throughout the season when the media is buzzing and expecting big things. We've seen teams fade away the second the media started to chirp before.
The Giants aren't as good as everyone thinks. Did you see how bad they played when they faced a decent team. The best team they WON against was the Texans. Eli Manning would not be able to handle our defense and throw several interceptions. They won against the Panthers, Bears(without cutler), Cowboys, Lions(who almost beat them if it wasn't for a fumble), and can't remember the other team. Although I would love a Jets Giants Superbowl so the Jets can prove who is the Team of New York!
That's the NFC. It's a weak conference overall. The Giants very well could be the class of the NFC at the moment, but they're still vastly inferior to a handful of AFC teams, the Jets included.
They are the only team doing anything in the NFC at this point. Tonight's win was against a lousy and demoralized Cowboys team, I wouldn't put much into this win yet.
Maybe I didn't get my point across well. I'm not trying to say that the Giants OR the Jets are real superbowl contenders at this point. It's way to early for that realistically IMO. But that won't stop the media. I don't recall the media talking NY/NY superbowl last year. I remember it the year before though, shortly before the team took a massive nose dive. All I'm saying is that Rex has his team conditioned well for any media storm that's probably going to start this week.
When the Jets were 8-3 coming off the Titans(10-0) victory and the Giants were 10-1, was the last time the NY Super Bowl was being talked about. It will be interesting though, if both the Jets and Giants ended up with 1 or 2 seeds, a NY Super Bowl would be at an all time and high. And if both won their home game and improved to the Championship Game, dont even get me started.
last I checked Cutler started that game and wasn't around to finish because of how the Giants played, so it is dishonest to attempt to dismiss that victory on the grounds that the Bears QB didn't play. he did play, and the only reason he didn't finish was because of the Giants. that's a far cry from what you are trying to pass it off as. the Jets are better than the Giants, and the Giants performance this season doesn't need to dishonestly be misrepresented to claim that.
The Giants are only a Super Bowl contender if you consider the Dallas Cowboys or Chicago Bears to be close to Super Bowl contender status, and I don't know why anybody would think that way. At the moment, it's more interesting to talk about AFC Championship Game matchups than Super Bowl matchups. That could change any week; maybe Reggie Bush will come back and make the Saints offense work again, or Tarvaris Jackson will prove capable of handing off to the best back in football and throwing to the best wideout in football without throwing three picks to linebackers. As of right now, the NFC isn't fielding any Super Bowl caliber squads, they're fielding a Super Bowl contender only by default. Personally, I think the Skins and Eagles (with Vick) are both a better shot to win the NFC East than the Giants. I know the Giants have the best record, but just like when the Bears were 4-0, I'm going by what I see on the field. Manning puts a lot of balls up in traffic, and he can be pressured. Their defense is designed for protecting a lead, and isn't much use against offenses that can either protect the quarterback or rush strong up the middle. New York v. Philadelphia and New York v. D.C. would both be more than acceptable matchups. New York v. New York would probably lead to the Super Bowl being cancelled by the host city. No city wants that many New Yorkers in town, not even New York.
Giants have an easier chance to make the SB than the Jets. Even in their own division, the Jets have a team good enough to beat anyone in the NFC. Ravens, Steelers, Jets are really looking much better than the rest of the league. Pats are right behind them & there's the always dangerous Manning in AFC. Giants might not be one of the top teams but there aren't any powerhouse teams standing between them & the SB. Seahawks & Bears are not impressive. Bears can't hold off Giants pass rush & should've lost to the Lions. Seahawks are winning games in the worst division in football. Saints look a step lower than last year without Bush. Packers are dealing w/ some major injuries.
This brings up an interesting question. I'm sure you guys know since the Jets and Giants have been sharing a stadium for a while, but how would Championship Sunday work if both the Giants and Jets host the game? It seems like it would be nearly impossible to play 2 games like that in the same stadium on the same day. At least with the times they've been scheduled in the past for the Conference Championship games.
The Giants looked pretty good in spots tonite...they also shot themselves in the foot quite a few times. On another subject...how zonked was Romo at the presser?
Id assume that theyd likely make one game sunday and the other on saturday/monday. Either that or worst case scenario have one be a 1pm game and the other a night game. But the NY NY superbowl should just end now. The Giants dont have a realistic shot @ getting anywhere near the superbowl. They only won this game because Romo got hurt. Yeah the NFC is absolutely horrific all around, but theres a laundry list of teams better than the giants. And oh interesting tidbit. The only teams with more points allowed this season in the NFC than the giants. The 49ers, Cardinals, and barely the eagles. Thats right the Rams/Seahawks/Panthers/Buccs/Lions/Vikings (to name a few) have better scoring defenses than the giants. The Giants have the 3rd most turnovers lost in the nfl. In addition they beat up on some cupcake teams. The Panthers (oh yeah thats a tough one), the Jekyl and Hide Bears, The Texans (without Andre Johnson, Owen Daniels, and I think either Kevin Walter or Jacoby Jones), the Lions, and the Cowboys without Romo. And their next 2 games after the bye are against the Seahawks and QBless Cowboys which means well likely hear a TON of "NY NY superbowl Chatter" when the Giants are 7-2 and the Jets are both leading their conferences in wins. Still the Giants will come show their true colors as they actually have to start playing some real teams against the skins/eagles/packers/vikings
Take off the homer glasses. How can you state they only won because Romo was injured when these Cowboys only won one game this season? There's nobody in the NFC the Giants can't beat. Skins/Eagles/Vikings/(injured)Packers aren't playing much better. Giants might not be a SB contender in the AFC but they definitely are in the NFC.
