It's only truly a discussion when both sides have reasonable arguments. You've failed in that regard, consistently eschewing rationality and knowledge for your visceral "it's all football, so RB role to RB role must be apples to apples approach.". Now you've devolved into seeking out situations in which there would be some possibility for Woodhead to help the team, all the while sticking to a failed understanding of who he was and how he fit into different systems. It's an emotional response, and as such, whining seems a much more appropriate label for what you're doing. Perhaps you'd prefer "childish hyperbole"?
Pretty much. Can't reason with morons, and yet I keep trying for some reason. Glutton for punishment, perhaps. Time to try to quit responding again and see how long that sticks.
How is it ridiculous? If people are going to make threads about Danny Woodhead and Joe McKnight then we're going to end up discussing depth, because these guys aren't starters, at least not here. If one RB goes down for one game right now we're looking at McKnight in games getting the ball, so it's not a far-fetched conversation. To your point, we have needed depth in the secondary already and those guys have done pretty well most of the time, spotty at other times. Of course there's some drop-off, that's why the starters are starters and the backups are backups. But who the backups are and how well they cal fill in becomes relevant at different times during the season.
That's your opinion. As I just mentioned, if one RB goes down right now even for one game McKnight is in the game carrying the ball where it could have been Woodhead or Leon. So call me all the names you want, it doesn't make you right. Hopefully it doesn't happen that way but it's football and RBs get hurt all the time.
I just want this to be clear: McKnight backers think he will help us this year more than Woodhead would have (or more than Woodhead is helping our nemesis New England) and/or that McKnight is a better player over time even if it doesn't show in 2010 ????
why can't people just let McKnight learn to play at this level......everybody expects him to be a gamebreaker like Leon...right out of the gate. Let the kid develop for christs' sakes....our run game and ST are fine without McKnight...it's not like he's a 1st round pick with high expectations. This argument is beyond ridiculous.
Good point. I think you're right. There are reasons the guy wasn't picked despite first round athleticism. I wouldn't mind trying him at corner. You're not talking about Scott Frost here, you're talking about an upper echelon athlete and a top tier coaching staff. Beyond that, I don't know that he even likes playing running back. He doesn't seem like he likes football. This could rejuvenate him. -X-
I think it can get that way if people take it to extremes, like people who wanted him cut or think he's the next Barry Sanders. The Jets bought themselves the luxury of giving him time to learn the ropes by getting LT and hitting that one out of the park. So to be clear, for me, I'm not bitching because I look at the overall picture. In the context of the one move for this year, Leon traded and McKnight drafted, I didn't necessarily like that, neither did a lot of other people. For some reason there are folks here who can't accept that, that's their problem. Time will tell how it works out, again so far LT has made it a non-issue, here's to that continuing.
Lets make it even more clear. Woodhead is a productive cog in an offense based around the pass where there is rarely more than 7 men in the box. The New England offense is completely different than ours and if not for 3 different backs goign down with injury he would not being playing much for them. In New York is was not about to get carries over LT or Greene and if he did, he would be facing defense that were thinking run first, because thats the type of team we are. You need to look at how different the situations are to evaluate things. He's been somewhat productive in a spread/pass first offense. One that Rex Ryan has no intention of running anytime soon.
I see what you're saying...believe me. But the overall picture regarding McKnight..doesn't come into view for another 2 years at least. This move can't be evaluated until McKnight's 3rd year, IMO. I mean...look at Felix Jones....he hasn't started being relevant until this year (he's basically starting over Barber now)...i know he's been injured....but Jones is just starting to show some value this season (his 3rd)....and he was a 1st round pick to boot. The Leon trade is getting too much emphasis as well....he wanted too much money for the type of role he played here....bottom line. Gamebreaker or not....he was replaceable. I loved having him here....but Tanny made the correct move.
Until that happens and we get to see McKnight play a meaningful snap in an NFL game I don't see a reason to be that concerned about it. We haven't seen McKnight since Hard Knocks ended so we have no idea how far he has come. Rex says he has been getting better all the time but we haven't gotten to see how much better he is. Until the Jets need him it is unfair to compare him to guys who have had a chance to do stuff in this league.
If McKnight even turns out to be a 3rd down back, or a nickel corner or even a guy who can just knock the fuck out of people on special teams I'd be happy. Or one of those guys who is always first down there for the tackle like Brad Smith and Wallace Wright used to be. I'll admit as pissed as I was about the Leon trade the Jets have done a good job covering what he did, but like with Jenkins they already had to do it on the fly last season so they knew what to do. If we stay healthy at RB we get away with it.
I'll buy this....but, I'm not going to throw McKnight under the bus...till he has a chance to learn the system and play at the pro level. Sometimes the light comes on immediately...sometimes it takes a few seasons. If anybody should be thrown under the bus this season....it's Gholston.....that clod is in his 3rd season....and hasn't shown much improvement.
Like he said.......and I'm a fan of Danny Woodhead...... ....but I also understand the difference in the systems here.....
McKnight pick looking worse every day The Jets have done a terrific job drafting lately and also coaching guys up. It is the reason they are where they are.Mid to late round guys like B.Smith, Slauson, E.Smith, Lowery, Cotcherry, Pouha, S.Greene, John Connor and walk ons like DeVito, Westerman, B.Moore and Idegihbo. So this is in no way a criticism of their drafting. It has been great. I also realize it is hard to swallow a 4th rd pick as a bust and to cut him right away. But the Joe McKnight pick is looking awful and actually worse by the day. We keep him on the roster yet he can't get on the field. Even as a returner or ST guy.We trade Leon Washington because we draft him (Leon has been terrific for Seattle) and then we eventually cut Woodhead (terrific for NE) and Chauncey Washington (picked up right away and a far more legitimate RB than McKnight). All this to draft and keep McKnight around. And now Rex is saying he might make a good CB? Sounds like we're reaching to make anything of this pick. Not good. Some day we have to accept the fact even the best make mistakes and not compound it by keeping this bust around and even worse, cutting better players for him.
So how long do you think draft picks should get before they are cut? Bryan Thomas was a major bust for 3 years before he got into Eric Mangini's system, now he's one of our most valuable guys. Brick was struggling in his rookie year and moreso in his sophomore year, now he's one of the best LTs in the league. Kyle Wilson is struggling now, is he a bust also? McKnight might pan out, he might not, but it's not possible to determine that now.
Yeah yeah you qualify away and then say this pick is looking worse and worse by the day...... That is just plain ridiculous, if not downright ignorant. Where is Leon's place on this team? Where are his snaps coming from other than special teams? You think he displaces whom exactly? LT? S. Greene? B. Smith in the Wildcat? So trading Leon is moot up till game 6. How about Woodhead? Where are his snaps coming from? You can not even make an argument for him on special teams. Leon on the other hand, can at least displace Smith on kickoffs. Woodhead does not fit the Jets offense. He had 3 seasons here and did exactly dick. In fact he did less than dick. If there is one offense where he fits, it is New England. Guess what, if Faulk isn't injured, DW isn't playing. I shouldn't even bother rebutting " a far more legitimate" RB like C. Washington. BTW he wasn't "picked up right away". He was signed Sept. 28, 4 weeks into the season because S. Jackson had a groin problem. Fact is he was signed off the Jets practice squad. He played the requisite/required/mandatory 3 games on the Rams full roster. Want to guess what the Rams did after those 3 weeks? How about they cut him and signed him to their practice squad. You think he has a shot at sniffing a snap as the Jets are currently constituted? Good god, McKnight is a developmental pick. He isn't asked to be a savior. The Jets can park him on the roster and afford the luxury of developing him into an NFL player. His spot on the roster didn't cost mediocre players such as Woodhead or CW. They had no spots as they were not skilled enough to unseat LT,SG,BS,SH,BE,JE for regular snaps and they were useless on special teams. There was no room for them. Leon, would have been solely a special teams player. Again, while he was recovering there are absolutely no snaps for him. Brad Smith more than ably makes up for his loss. So no this decision is not looking more awful day by day. The posts espousing this nonsense on the other hand are................
