Very early in the season but hey it's the bye week and I guess everyone is bored... So... anyone has any opinion on what we should be looking for in the draft? Given that Tanny always tries to fill all the holes pre-draft so he can go BPA this might be a useless thread but hey we've got to discuss about something! - WR (medium need) Hypothesis: We don't resign one between Holmes&Edwards If we let Edwards go (not likely) we should get a guy similar to him (big, vertical threat). If we let Holmes go (more likely) we should look for a quick slot guy. I prefer Cotchery working down the sideline and not through the middle. - DE (big/medium need) Hypothesis: One between Ellis and Pryce is let go / retires While I think there is a possibilty both decide to stay and rotate at one DE spot next year (hope they have enough left in the tank) I wouldn't mind having a big young DE that can get some pressure on the opposing QB. Gholston has proven he sucks balls and will be let go (no way he sees his roster bonus of 2.5 mill in March) so one spot opens up. Hoping one of our youngsters steps up. Dixon, Gilbert and Pitoitua might bring something to the table... - NT/DT (small need) Hypothesis: Jenkins retires I'd like to know how well Kroul is learning the NT position but I think it wouldn't hurt the Jets to bring in a big talented 300+ NT/DT guy. - ILB (small need) We need a backup/project/ST ace at ILB. - OLB (big need) Hypothesis: Taylor retires We need an OLB bad imo. Should be our highest pick. Thomas is solid and Taylor is contributing but imo the latter will be gone next year (retire) and we need a 3 OLB rotation. - FS (medium/small need) I think Pool and E. Smith are similar players (looking at their skillset). I wouldn't mind keeping only one and adding a true center field FS. But I wouldn't rip my hair off if we kept them both. After all Pool was injured a lot during pre-season and still has to show what he can do in this D. Maybe he canturn into more of a ball-hawk. It's just this D would look so sick with a Reed type of FS. - RT (big need or no need at all) I think Ducasse can be our future RT. However IF Callahan & the Jets think he can only be a G in the NFL (no idea what their opinion is on that matter, I actually hope he is getting trained as a RT right now) this becomes a pretty big need. How many season will Woody be able to play at full speed? Hunter can be a solid backup but we need to groom someone for Woody's eventual retirement. In an ideal draft I'd go: 1 - OLB (Miller / Ayers) 2 - DE (WATT/C. Jordan/J. Crick) 3 - Cromartie 4 - WR (T. Young / M. Szczur) 5 - FS 6 - DT/NT 7 - ILB WHEN IS JJ WATT ELIGIBLE? I WANT HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mambo, I agree with alot of your points. First, let me say drafting toward the end of Round 1....I'll never say we need to draft a certain position, we need to take the best player within our needs. IMO, the biggest need going into FreeAgency/Draft this coming Spring is the need for a OLB pass rusher. Taylor's future for 2011 is in doubt. BT is an excellent run stopper, but not a pass rush threat from the outside. The Jet's defense would be even more lethal with a pass rush without blitzing the majority of the secondary. If the Jets have an opprtunity to draft a special player like Powe, we might not be able to pass on him. Although not a huge need, it's difficult to pass up a massive NT with Powe's skillset. DE is a big need...let's see if Gilbert develops, but it needs to be a focus. I'd like to get another playmaking Safety and if he's the best player on the board at the end of Round 1....that's OK. An excellent Safety will be available in late round 1. Either Holmes or Edwards will be gone, so a WR is going to be a need. A slot # 3 WR will be a need , but in a later Rd, you don't invest Round 1 money on your #3 WR. A RT/Guard for depth and possible replacement for Woody and to give Ducasse some competition. I like to get another RB to get into the mix with LT and Greene.
1) That's my draft philosphy too... it was just to say what my priorities where. The no.1 evaluation should be on talent, not just need. 2) Yup. 3) Agree on Powe, if we get a chance to draft him he would fit in nicely in a Powe/Pouha/Devito rotation at NT and DT. Actually that would be sick. That rotation + our ILBs = you don't run on us. 4) Yup, we'll have to see at DE. I don't think it would be so out of this world to have both Ellis and Pryce back next year. They play 50% snaps a game each and doing so they should be fresh even though they aren't youngsters anymore. But if one of them retires, or we deem him not good enough anymore, we need to bring in or develop some serious talent. 5) A ball-hawk S would make this D so devastating. Still wonder how Lowery would do in that position. He is playing a hybrid CB/FS now (according to Rex). 6) I agree... it should be from rd 3 or under. 7) If Woody retires I wouldn't mind seeing a Hunter/Ducasse battle. Who wins gets Woody's job, who looses gets Hunter's current job. 8) Really? I'd do that only if we decide to move McKnight either to a Percy Harvin role (so more slot WR than RB) or to CB. Otherwise I'm fine with LT, Greene and McK. As always it's great to talk to you about the draft WW
JJ Watt is 6'6 292 and you just listed him as a outside linebacker prospect...think about that. This kid is a hell of a 3-4 end prospect. ...not a 3-4 OLB. He's a redshirt junior, so he might just come out early.
Good take on the tackle, I still dont think that we would address the Oline early, but then again I said the same thing last year and I was wrong I just say look for a defensive player in a possible need area. I'm a little more inclined to say safety because our pass d has not been fantastic this year
I would add HB to this list of needs. The only way HB is no need at all is if 1) LT doesn't retire AND 2) McKnight develops. Neither is a guarantee. If LT does retire and McKnight just can't cut it as a player (or more realistically, can only contribute marginally) HB becomes a HUGE need. Like a first round need.
Whops I added him in an edit in the wrong place! Thanks for pointing it out BTW What's your opinion on Crick? Have a favorite a DE? Mmm... only reason LT retires is because we win the SB imo... and even then I wouldn't be so sure. I'm confident McK will be at least a capable 3rd down back come next year...
Agreed with that. I don't think LT is going anywhere right now. he is having the absolute time of his life playing for the Jets. Sure he could decide to go out on top if we win it all, but its very clearly he has so much more to give the NFL after this season. Back to the draft, as others mentioned if Powe is available when we go on the clock, he almost has to be the pick. Jenks future is up in the air (at best). Sure he says he is coming back, and probably will give it everything he has, but Tanny wont allow him to try and come back for 4 million or whatever. Also it's not like we can count on Jenks for half a season, much less a full year. Bringing in a top NT without having to move up for him, really would be almost the best possible scenario. You have to remember, Pouha is 31, sure he started in the NFL later in life, but his body will start to break down pretty soon... Maybe not next season, but certainly we cant consider him the long term (3-5 year) option.
I think Holmes is more likely to be resigned because he's going to be cheaper and he's the better WR. He'll have chemistry with Mark in time, but my hunch is we'll be able to keep both for one more year because someone is getting tagged, if there is football in 2011. The Jets do need a young WR to groom, but he doesn't need to be a gamebreaker. He needs to be game specific. DE is a big need. Hell the front 7 needs a lot of young blood. Any front 7 player is the most important pick in the draft. I'd like to see rounds 1 and 2 dedicated to the front 7. The OLBs are all going to be over 30 next year, and that means the pass rush disappears. The Jets needs young blood on the edges more than anywhere else. I don't care if the OLB can't play the run for his 1st 2 seasons, they need a Pass Rushing specialist. I do think Safety is a need, because if the Jets had a playmaker next to Leonhard who could learn the defense they way he knows it and can run it when he retires the defense will be set on the back end. The Jets need an all world safety. Earl Thomas is still a dream in my head from last season.
Enjoy it!!!!!!!!!! Just Enjoy it!!! We don't need a thing!!!!!!!! Only time to gel as a team!! Why not beleave! For a change, look at the moves we've made they are all panning out! Trades are doing thier thing! Free agent pick ups are awsome! Just enjoy the Ride!!!!!!!!!:beer:
you better be drunk or high. This comes from those same fans who wonder why the team was doing so well and then it all fell apart after a couple of great seasons. Fuckin dopes.
Any chance we see the Jets scour the Free Agent Market for help at OLB? Merriman Lawson(Looking for a Pace type contract though) Ray Edwards(I think he could switch to OLB) Also I believe John Jolly will be a FA, he's a nice NT/DE tweener that would fit well on the line.
With all the players we have to re-sign I can't see us being too big a factor in the free agent market this summer.
If LT keeps playing at this level all year there's not a snowball's chance in hell he retires next year. He's having too much fun. I think it's in the FO's DNA to take a RB every year anyway, so I'm sure we'll come up with a project in the later rounds.
I know it's very much in the early going, but if we have a choice between Braylon or Santonio, I just feel like Braylon's size is much more beneficial for Sanchez to have as a target. But I've been thinking this whole time since theyre both fuck ups and neither one will have eye-popping stats, the Jets might get lucky and be able to keep both. The problem with that line of thinking however is two-fold. One, neither is getting signed until a new CBA is hashed out, and two I think I might be severly underestimating the stupidity of another team to just give one of these guys a boatload of money regardless of the reasons for trepidation I just listed. I mean the Raiders gave Javon Walker how much? Bengals gave Antonio Bryant how much to do nothing? I'm worried some wideout starved team like the Rams or Panthers will just offer either one an outlandish deal.
I'm a Crick fan --- I think we have benefitted from his draft stock unfairly dropping. People thought he could be a Suh all by himself, but he is constantly getting double-teamed this year. Love his size, strength & motor. Barring a warrior workout at the combine, he could be had in the late 2nd (no way he gets in the 3rd round).
At this time, my top five 3-4 end prospects are: 1. Ohio State's Cameron Heyward 2. Wisconsin's JJ Watt 3. Miami's Allen Bailey 4. UNC's Marvin Austin 5. Nebraska's Jared Crick
Keep an eye on the players that leave Baltimore for free agency. Safeties Tom Zbikowski and Dawan Landry are both free agents. LB Tavares Gooden is also a free agent.
His athleticism is what puts him ahead of someone like a Jared Crick. In a scheme like Rex's, an athletic end like Bailey could dominate in multiple fronts. Marvin Austin dropped because he's a dumbass and his stock won't be as high as it should.
