Given that males interested in football are the likely part of their target audience of who they would like to increase the amount of donations from, I'd say they are doing a damn good job by exposing us to it every Sunday. I'd get over it....
They should make this a joint thing with coverage on Testicular cancer as well. Edit:  Maybe that gag was just toooo subtle.
I think it's a great gesture, but doing it for a whole month is overkill. You see it one week and it makes you think, if only for a few seconds, about something you might not otherwise think about, unless you were personally touched by the disease. That's great. Do it for four weeks and people start to resent it for whatever reason. The message starts to get undermined. Four weeks of pink is counterproductive. Nobody is saying that we should ignore breast cancer, but if, as some people are claiming, anything goes in terms of charity and disease-awareness, why not wear pink all the time? Why just one month?
i understand wanting awareness for other things. if you want to raise awareness for other things then get on your horse and do something about it, someone obviously did with breast cancer.
Most companies donate "a portion" of their proceeds to the cause, which in some cases is just a dirty marketing tactic. I don't think the NFL is as bad since they sell the pink player gear in auctions and I'm pretty sure all proceeds go to charity.
ATTN: NFL to Cure Breast Cancer (Wait, What?) http://buquad.com/2010/10/14/its-breast-cancer-awareness-month-in-case-you-couldnt-tell/ A predicament in pink http://www.thesunnews.com/2010/10/17/1757776/a-predicament-in-pink.html
I was just having the same conversation with my wife and she agrees. Testicular and prostate cancer are common as well and far more aggressive. I am in no way minimizing what women go through with breast cancer, but seriously men get it worse if they have either of the two.
I'm all about the pink, I like to get my face all up in there and... Oh, the pink on the field, no comment.
Are these articles supposed to bolster your argument against breast cancer awareness? Maybe the first article could have done a little fact finding to see that what the NFL is doing is actually raising money for breast cancer research rather than likening it to Mike's pink lemonade and cancer profiteering. The second article seems to want to make the point that if an organization does not promote all cancer awareness it should not promote any. I guess they should stop the United Way commercials also since if they are not giving equal time to all groups then they should give it to none.
Me too. My mother-in-law, who is a great person, had both breasts removed. I know that makes it personal, but I love what they are doing. Since it runs in my wife's family, I'm always cognizant of it. I'm also aware there are plenty of other great causes, but I'm all for a the pink being out there.
You can never say that awareness is a bad thing, however relegating one quarter of the season for a particular cause I feel is misguided. There are tons of great causes to get behind; why is breast cancer the only one addressed and for so long? A poster earlier says that over exposure can do more harm then good in the sense that the initiative loses it's significance. I think we can all agree that seeing it for 4 weeks makes less people think "wow what a powerful gesture" and more like "oh, those pink things again". I mean you see it as the month progresses, less players wear the items and it loses the powerful effect it once had.
