My second attempt at a Jet's mock for 2011, my last was 3 months ago. With the emergence of Jason Taylor, I believe the Jets will rework his contract for 2011 and he will be a Jet next year. Jets can't sign everyone, Braylon Edwards will be done after this year. Santonio Holmes will be our #1 WR. Love Kris Jenkins, he is done. IMO. at this point in time, I've filled some needs. 1) Jerrell Powe, NT, Ole Miss.....Jets add a big man that is an athletic freak. Powe can play NT and end, something Rex looks for in a player. 2) Austin Pettis, WR. Boise St.....Solid receiver that would be perfect with Holmes and Cotchery. Pettis is an excellent special teams player. Could go earlier, lack of top speed may hold him back. Pettis is a player and a winner. 4) Matt Reynolds, OT, BYU......Big man that would be an excellent RT. Equally good at the run and pass protection. Depth and could be Woody's replacement in the future. 5) Kenny Rowe, DE/OLB, Oregon....great motor and gets after the QB. Has played stading up in Oregon's system. I really like Rowe's intensity. 6) Derrick Locke, RB/KR, Kentucky.............Exciting player, what's McKnight's future??? Great KR returner. 7) Jermale Hines, S, OSU.......Depth at safety and can play some nickel.....very versatile player and good teams player. Comments welcome.
Good stuff, Powe is my #1 target for the Jets 1st round next year. We need someone like him. I'm sure Conner would love blocking for Locke again, but I don't see the Jets going that direction after only 1 year of Joe McKnight
It's only a 6th rd pick, so it's not a big deal. Locke has had some injury issues, but is an exciting player that could add depth and light a fire under McKnight's ass. Locke would be a very good 3rd down change of pace player that is a very good receiver out of the backfield.
I would switch in a safety for Pettis. I think FS is a huge need for us. Eric Smith is not good and Pool is never healthy. I like the Powe pick though, it'd be big for our DL.
You'll want another WR after Edwards isn't signed. With Leonard and Pool I don't see the immediate need. Pool's issues were due to mirgraines not a concussion. Hines is a player that could surprise.
I don't see how someone can rely on Brodney Pool. He hasn't played much this year and that has nothing to do with the concussion issues. Pool is a solid player, but he can't stay on the field. I love Leonhard though, one of the more underrated players on our team. He's good in run support, is Rex's coordinator on the field, and is an effective blitzer also. With all the good WR's that have gone late in recent years, I think we can wait to get someone until the 4th. IMO, this is the year where we need to stockpile picks. I know everyone wants to do it every year, but it has never made more sense. The Jets don't have any huge needs, don't need a QB, and have depth holes everywhere. If we can regain a second rounder, Tanny can go DL/FS/OLB/WR in the first four rounds and maybe pick up another OL after that.
With the exception of Von Miller and Akeem Ayers, Jerrell Powe is now the guy I want in Rd 1. His versatility and athleticism along with his size and strength would make him a perfect fit for our style of Def. QB's would have nightmares seeing him being lined up all over the place not knowing where he'd be coming from. And I also definitely expect him to be sitting there at our pick. Only team I'm concerned about right now maybe taking him before us would be the Fins. Getting Austin Pettis would make me yell and scream in pure excitement knowing he'd be suiting up in Green & White. The PERFECT number 2 WR to have lined up with Holmes and Cotchery...Quick, shifty, fantastic hands, strong lower body, great route runner, just like WW85 said lacking the top end breakaway speed.. but that's why we got Holmes (and Clowney lol). I could see Pettis being a YAC machine no doubt about it. I could only hope these 2 end up in Green and White after next April. Great mock those first 2 picks pretty much couldn't make me any happier. As an afterthought, I'm sure it's unlikely but in the event Dontay Moch is still there rd 2 and we took Powe rd 1, I'd take him over Pettis. Having those 2 would put our pass rush into another level of incredible. Extreme long shot I know but maybe he gets a strained calf at the Combine and it skews his numbers to where he drops to us.
I like Jerrell Powe a lot, but I don't think he's long enough or athletic enough to play end...even if it's only in certain packages. I really want to see the Jets go after an end early, mainly because I'm a big supporter of Sione Pouha. I'd like to see a rotational nose brought in through free agency or selected in the later rounds. With all of that being said, I'd be excited to see Jerrell Powe selected in the first if he's the best player available. He'd be the perfect fit at nose in Ryan's scheme. I just have a feeling we'll go elsewhere. Pettis is a hell of a prospect. I'd love to see him in green and white. I'm not a big fan of Kenny Rowe in this scheme. I think Ryan likes heavier rush backers.
I wouldn't go WR in round 2. I'd prefer to go NT rd 1, then DE or LB round 2. Our d-line and pass rush need help. WR not so much.
Braylon Edwards or Santonio Holmes will be gone next season. The Jets are going to need help at the position. Rex Ryan has no problem building his defense with a bunch of unknowns. He knows this team has to be built around Mark Sanchez. Due to the fact that 2011's wideout class will be top notch, the Jets may have the opportunity to land a very talented player at that position in the second round. This front office has to continue to bring in weapons for Sanchez. It's the only way he's going to get better and better.
Appreciate your comments. I really like Pouha, but he's not a true NT in the sense of a replacement for KJ. If Powe is available, he probably would be the best option to replace Jenkins. Our D-line needs another big body and to rely solely on Pouha/DeVito is asking a bunch. Having Powe would be like adding 2 players, cause he would need to be double teamed quite often. Our D-Line, NT and DE, needs some youth and it needs to be addressed this offseason. I understand the emphasis Rex puts on the back 7, but we have neglected the D-line the past couple of drafts, it's time to draft a good young prospect. I really do see a need for 3-4 DE, I just don't see too many options in Rd 1. Jordan is playing well and his stock is rising, I don't believe he's going to crack Rd 1. Heyward's stock is cooling off. I 've watched Heyward extensively this year and he's been inconsistent and invisible for long streches. Heyward makes a few good plays and then plays down to the competition (Ohio, E Michigan). I still believe Heyward is a Rd 1 prospect, but maybe not the Top 5 player some of us expected. Lets' see how Heyward responds facing the rest of Big Ten schedule.....it could mean the difference of a Top 5 pick to a Mid/Late 1st Rd selection. The Jets need another WR for 2011. The Jets haven't drafted WR early in a long time, gone the trade route, it's time to bring Sanchez a very good young WR. I'm betting Edwards will be the odd man out, unless Holmes gets in trouble again and is out for a year. I like Pettis' special team ability and in an ordinary WR class, as you mentioned, Pettis would be a sure fire rd 1 pick. I really like Rowe, he can add another 15lbs and probably still be the same player. The Jets need to generate more pass rush from their OLB and Rowe would be a good situational player. Taylor and Thomas still can make plays and are playing great, their age is a factor.
Always love your stuff WW85, but sorry --- I couldn't disagree more. Cannot possibly imagine a scenario in which a 3-4 DE is not our first pick. And if a good one is not available when we draft, I'd say we'd HAVE to trade down & acquire more picks. Shaun Ellis is UFA when the season is over. Granted, we'll probably resign him short term. Sione Pouha is really our NT - even though he has been playing both NT & DE. Granted, 2011 is the final year of his contract & probably not to settle for $1 million per year anymore ---- but I think Tanny will make a good effort to keep him. Vernon Gholston is gone after the season (not that he was really ever here after he was drafted). Jason Taylor & Bryan Thomas are playing really well, but they are not 3-4 DEs. So after DeVito, we really dont have anybody. Its time to pick a 6-4 300lb 3-4 DE! Heyward, Crick, Cameron Jordan, Derek Wolfe, Lawrence Guy & plenty of others. And a SAFETY --- we really need one. Along w/DE, that is becoming a position of urgency.
Sapp....I'm glad some people disagree with my POV...it would be pretty boring having the same opinions. I guess I'm different than most....I can NEVER say with certainity, a certain position (DE) is a must 1st Rd pick. Too many variables exist for me to get myopic on one position in Rd 1, especially drafting in the late 20s/30s......who's available, what is the value? I really studied the Jets needs and availablility for 2010's draft and predicted a CB (McCourty) and I wasn't too far off. Many thought I was crazy, and wanted an OLB or DE, but you can't reach for a player if a need is available and good value. If that was the case, that DE/OLB we all know from TCU would have been a Jet and not Kyle Wilson. At this point I just don't see the value of a DE in late Round 1. I'm not arguing we don't need a DE, but if Powe is available, we have to take him. Large athletic 330+ NTs don't come around too often. I've mentioned how much I like Cameron Jordan, I just don't see Rd 1 value at the end of Sept. There is no question the D-line needs to be a focus in this draft...it's been an afterthought for too long. We are uncertain about alot of Jet player's future in 2011...Ellis, Taylor, Cro, Edwards.....on and on. One thing that is certain...Kris Jenkins is gone and Pouha while very good, needs help in the middle. I'll put WR ahead of Safety...since Edwards is likely a goner. I have faith in Pool and JL.
I see where you are with most of that draft WW, and honestly I think Powe might be the type of player that this team can't pass up in the long term. 34 teams need legitimate nose tackles, and as much as I love Pouha, he is 31 years old. Pouha has the ability to play any spot on the line, and will be a valuable piece to have as the starter who can slide over to end when Powe is in. That said, it all depends on what players are available at the time, and by April there could be a 34 End that I think would be more valuable than Powe. Right now, not that many guys are really standing out to me, except for Auburn's Nick Fairley, who is a stud.
The likelihood of any of those guys making some kind of impact is very low. Hopefully Tannenbaum's found a few diamonds in the rough. I'm excited to see what Jarron Gilbert can do in the 3-4 though. Cody Brown and Marcus Dixon need to stay healthy.
I love Powe and Pettis picks. Pettis impresses me every time I watch Boise play and would love to see him line up in the slot. Next year, assuming we dont bring back both Holmes and Edwards, Were only one injury away from having Brad Smith or David Clowney starting for us next year. I like Pool but Im not as confident in him as you are. If Powe is gone, I wouldnt mind going safety in the first, especially if Cro is gone. We could use a big time playmaker at that position and we are going to need more athleticism in the secondary if Cro doesnt come back.
I think Brodney Pool is going to have a great season. We'll see it's early and he needs to stay healthy. I don't feel the need to invest a 1st rd pick at Safety. I do agree a Safety is needed but we could get one in Rd 2, 4 or 5. Again, if Powe is available it's almost a no brainer. If Powe is gone, I'm going BPA at these positions in Rd 1...(no particular order)...WR, OLB, DE/DT, RT.
Agreed on Powe. Part of me wants to get another 3-4 DE type player but with the kind of success Rex seems to get with UDFA's and retreads not sure it's a priority.
