CHREBET: A Fish Fry and First Place
Posted by Wayne Chrebet on September 30, 2010 – 9:50 am

Here is Wayne Chrebet’s fourth blog of the season for newyorkjets.com:

I believe that this is what we envisioned during the offseason and at the start of the season. What an intense ending to a great game. This has become a great rivalry. Unfortunately I couldn’t watch it real time. I was at a wedding. Seriously. Who has a wedding on a Sunday during football season?

I know it was probably rude but I was glued to my phone all night, hitting refresh every couple of minutes. I admit it, my blood is still as green as it was when I played. It was a night of ups and downs. We score first. 7-0. We go right down the field. Take the crowd right out of it. Like I said in my blog last week — in a split second, it instantly changes the dynamic of the game. Going into the game, Dolphin fans were saying to themselves, “We’re 2-0. We beat Minnesota on the road. We beat the Jets both games last year. This is our year.” And then, like a punch in the gut, we score and deflate the whole crowd. Beautiful.

So at the wedding there are high fives all around. Yes, I turned everyone into a Jets fan there. They really had no choice. I did everything short of grabbing the DJ mike and giving updates. OK. Then 14-0. This could be a real whooping . More high fives. Then a bad pass interference penalty put the Fins inside the 10-yard line and then eventually a TD for the Dolphins. Fine, it’s 14-7.

I know Wilson is only a rookie, but he had two bad ones on third-and-25+ in the Ravens game which got him a 5-yard penalty and a first down for them. And on a second-and-22 in this situation? Can’t do it. I feel for him. I really do. He’s been thrown into the fire for a defense that has very high expectations for themselves. He plays on a team with two very good corners and the other teams are going to choose him to go after as much as they can. The blitz scheme puts him in a one-on-one situation a lot and he has to be able to handle it. I spoke to Mike Tannenbaum during training camp and they were very impressed by his skill and maturity. He’s just going to have to grow up a lot faster than some of the other rookies in this year’s first round. Just saying.

So the teams go into the locker room at the half up 14-10. Not bad. Could have been better. They’ll be the first ones to admit that.

Second half. A slow song comes on and I have to dance with my wife. Next thing I know, the Dolphins go ahead. But before I can blink, Braylon goes 67 yards. At the time, I figured it was a bomb. When I saw the replay at home I was thinking, “This is how a championship team reacts.” Someone needed to step up and make a play to turn the tide back in our favor. Great throw by Sanchez. Seems like a normal pass but to us receivers that is a perfect throw.

Vinny Testaverde was the best at this. Lead you too much, momentum carries you forward, potentially out of bounds, which is what happened to Keller vs. the Ravens. Thrown behind you, tougher to really do anything with it. Mark put it right on the numbers, Braylon was able to make a move and you saw the result.

I’m happy that he had a good night. Only two catches, but big ones. Like some people, I wasn’t sure if he should be able to play or not. Last week’s blog told you how I felt about it. He sat, he waited, then he made probably his most meaningful plays as a Jet. Not that it made it right, but he handled himself like a man, took his medicine and did what he was brought in to do. I know the Jets let them go right down the field on the last drive, but they made the play when they needed to. Nice catch, Coleman. Game over. 2-1.

Jason Taylor. He’s officially a New York Jet now. He was the most hated guy in the stadium Sunday night and he loved it. How could you not? You play your butt off for a team all those years and then they don’t need you anymore. I never experienced what it would be like to have come back and played the Jets, but I can only imagine how great it would feel to come back and play the way he did against them.

I can’t lie, I never liked the guy. Respected him, didn’t like him. When the team signed him in the offseason, my first thought was “Why?” He was our enemy. He badmouthed us every time we played against him. Although if anybody has ever seen clips of the Monday Night Miracle, he was miked and went from laughing that our fans were leaving early to “I can’t believe we let them back into this.” We won and justice was served.

Back to the point. I wasn’t sure why. Very good player on some bad teams. Then he’s gone. Now he’s back in a big way. I’ve eaten my words and like most Jets fans, we’re glad he’s in green and white now. Even though I still don’t like him. I’m kidding. Relax. He’s part of the family now.

So we sit at 2-1. There’s a three-way tie between the Jets, Dolphins and Patriots at 2-1. Best part about it is that we have a half-game lead on them because we hold the tiebreakers right now. You obviously want to win every game, but you can’t lose the division ones. Doesn’t matter if you’re 8-8 or 12-4. You win your division, you’re in the tournament. Obviously 12-4 and homefield advantage in the playoffs would be ideal. Other teams won’t want to have to play in the New Stadium in January. The wind is going to blow right through that stadium, it’s going to be cold as **** and the place will be rocking.

Another division game. Another hostile environment. They love their football up in Buffalo. And it will be football weather up there. I checked and it will be 52 degrees. They’re 0-3 and the fans still go crazy for them. Especially when the Jets are in town. So you don’t have to Google them, here’s the rundown: Like I mentioned, they are 0-3. Lost opener 15-10 to Miami at home. Got pummeled in Green Bay 34-7.

Here’s the difference between that team then and now. There’s been a QB change. Trent Edwards isn’t the starter anymore. They actually released him this week. Ryan Fitzpatrick is starting and he looked good vs. the Pats last week. He threw for 247 yards up in New England (although he threw two picks) and they just fell short 38-30. They didn’t play like an 0-3 team. They have a good running back in Lynch, some good receivers. Their X factor is C.J. Spiller. He scored twice last week, second one on a 95-yard kickoff return. Westhoff’s crew for the Jets has been very good on special teams this year. He is the best in the league. And they’re going to have their hands full.

Bottom line is that this is your classic trap game. Coming off an emotional and hard-fought win last week in front of a national crowd to playing an 0-3 team before a big Monday night game at home vs. Brett Favre and Minnesota. I played in a lot of these. You always know who you’re playing in the next game or weeks ahead. You can’t not.

The Jets have two things going for them. They have a head coach that is fully aware of this. You need a coach who pounds it into you to not take a team lightly, and Rex is that kind of coach. Second thing is that there are enough veterans on the team to do the same. Sounds different coming from the guy lining up next to you.

The Jets are the better team. If they can put pressure on Fitzpatrick, contain Spiller, and Sanchez can lead the team like he has the past two games, they have a great chance of coming home 3-1.

Chrebet for the win. He writes like he played: short quick sentences, keeps coming at you and leaves it all on the page.

Of all people, Chrebet is the last person any Jets fan should complain about. He can write like David Clowney and he'd still be one of the better Jets ever.

His blogs are actually better because it's written like a fan would.

Women do this to see if the guy is going to be loyal and submit to his wife. It's the only possible reason I can see. A spring or summer wedding doesn't interfere with football at all, let's everybody go outside for some sunshine, gives lots of sunlight for the evening reception, etc.

Doing it on a football Sunday is just to assert control over the new husband and make sure his buddies kow-tow too. It's like revenge for all the days you flopped on the couch and watched football while the women of the house were sure the lawn need to get trimmed or the hedges mowed or anything but that godawful racket in the living room all day.

I love Chrebet more than ever. If JT is good enough for him then JT is good enough for me.

I'm afraid I found that rambling and pretty much unreadable - and Chrebet was one of my favourite players.

I read his autobiography once as well. It was dreadful.

How can you not love Wayne Chrebet, the only good thing to come out of the Kotite error.

I spent about 10 mins talking Jets football with Chrebet at a Nets playoff game back in the Jason Kidd days. He actually came up to me because I was wearing a Jets shirt. One of those times in life I will never forget, really cool guy that loved football, loved the Jets and still does.

A team filled with 53 Chrebets would win the SB every year. Only wish he could get involved with the team somehow so he can get a ring.

They don't give the blog writer a ring?! How totally uncouth. We'll have to bring this up with them at some point.

I have been invited to Weddings on Sunday's during the football season and I don't go. I don't care what people think, its totally selfish to have a wedding on a Sunday in the fall.
