it's probably norton screwing it up.

is there a bunch of bs sw on the machine?

maybe there is a lot of crap running on startup and also running in the background..

Start > Run > type in msconfig > go to startup > tell us what's there.

Most of those programs like iTunes, Norton, weatherbug, etc are probably coming on at startup and destroying the speed. Probably some viruses there too

I'm heading out in a little bit, I have an open house to go to for my oldest.

Remove Norton, throw it in the trash. That alone will help DRAMATICALLY.

Install MS Sec and let it run a full scan.

    Run Ccleaner to.

Look at the startup programs as per Rock's instructions above.

    Bad RAM maybe? >512?

    Regardless, that's poor.

I would get more memory in that bitch.

Dump all the BS not needed.

    Defrag it again.

    Clean up the strart-up programs.

Save $ for a new laptop.

What if the machine can't handle that much?

I have seen XP machines with a 1G max.

Ecko--go to crucial.com and let crucial tell you what you need.

This was great. I just unchecked it all and re-started the comp and it loaded like a normal computer.

Now the issue is opening Internet Explorer, it takes about a minute for yahoo.com to load then the internet runs smooth afterwards. Will try the othersteps you said...

    But it's definitely better.

Yea, it should say something like DDR, DDR2, SD, RD, or whatever before it. For example: 512 mb DDR2 RAM. DDR2 is the most common

windows 7 rocks. i love it. buy it from whever and put the cd in. thats it.

I have a software question gents!! i've been using winamp for the last, i dont know, decade or so. I've run into an issue on windows 7 tho where the audio is verrrrry low. i've got everythign cranked up to the max, but winamp is very quiet.

i've tried other audio programs, like songbird, and the audio was loud and proud. the only issue is songbird is a huge resource hog, and when i'm playing civ 5, i need all the resources i can get!!

does anyone know of a nice LOUD, low resource music player? qt sucks, wmp is just as much of a resource hog.

    i appriciate the help!!
