I could be wrong, but i dont recall that he led with his helment. he hit welker's helmet with his arm. Which in my humble opinion shouldn't even be a penalty as long as the defender is making a football move to breakup an incoming pass. as for the likely penalty for that play - who knows, the NFL is totally inconsistent about this stuff. big ben gets 4 wks for sexual assault which is the same as somebody gets for smoking a joint. ridiculous.
Which reminds me, Rhodes was ejected today. Somebody took a shot at her vagina and she starts crying to the ref and starts feeling him up. Ref told him Im not interested in a lapdance so take your shit and get out of here. Poor girl...must still be crying.
I said it right after he made the hit: good penalty. You can harp on the "discipline on third-and-long" angle all you want, but the bottom line is this: if you're not going to be physical with Wes Welker, you're not going to contain him. There are penalties I know Rex Ryan hates. "Crushing Jet-killers" is not one of them.
On 3rd down that's a terrible penalty, especially when the pass is long and incomplete. Esp. since our offense was on the field for like a minute before the defense had to run back out there
I understand metagame considerations but still prolonging drives after a seemingly huge stop is idiotic. So far it has killed the Jets.
Listen, you can talk to me about terrible penalties during the losses. I disagree that it was a bad penalty. Maybe Smith doesn't make that hit, and we get the ball on 4th down. Maybe we score. And then maybe happy-go-lucky Welker converts every goddamn 3rd down for the rest of the game. Welker got lit up early. As a result, he wasn't a factor late. Big picture, battle vs. war, etc.
But there's such a difference, Puck, between Kyle Wilson holding a receiver on a 3rd and long in week 1 and Eric Smith devastating the Patriot offense's most significant weapon in week 2.
Big deal, he looked fine afterwards. I say he did it to draw the flag. I mean, you don't go from grabbing your head as if your brains were sloshing around, to running routes and catching passes the very next second. Whatever.
I'm amazed anyone here can defend Smith on this one. He threw a forearm at Welker's head after the ball went by! Not only was it a dirty play, but it was stupid and undisciplined play. Same for Braylon's penalty - what an ass! If the outcome of the game had been different, you'd hear about those penalties all week.
The Pats should be penalized by the league for putting an obviously concussed player back in the game. Cheaters. The last time we played the Pats they sent someone to take out Strickland. I have no doubt this play was retribution. My only disappointment is that they did not take out 2 of theirs.
For me it looked like he was going for the ball then turned it into just a forearm across the helmet. But the way Welker went down was just to get the penalty, there is no way that a forarm on a Helmet is going to hurt that bad, it would hurt the arm more than his head. it just grazed him and he went down like a wuss. Dumb penalty though.
isnt Brady quite matey with Moss? I wonder if he isnt trying a bit too hard to show the value of Moss to the team in order to get his brosef a better contract?
Bradys long bombs to Moss were so far off the mark, the only reason they got the TD was because they caught us out of position and Moss got a run on Revis. Even with all that space brady almost overthrew it. You can certainly see that brady has a lot of zip now on his passes but i still think he longs balls are a little hopefull.
I'm surprised at the differences in opinoin on that hit. Much like the Boldin hit, it seemed mostly unlucky to me. He didn't lead with the helmet, he was aiming for where the ball was, Welker's a small guy, shit happens.
Welker is tough and he looked fine the rest of the 1st half. It was a dumb penalty as we continued our poor play through the 1st qtr but thankfully on both sides of the ball we got it going in the 2nd qtr and NE started to commit dumb penalties.
I have to take another look it, but I didn't see it that way yesterday. It certainly looked like Smith threw his forearm/elbow up high. In any event, I feel like it's certainly debatable, but I hate when the macho crap takes over...there are people on this board who think tough football and cheap shots are synonymous.
It looked to me like Smith thought he could catch the ball... Looked to me like his arms were open and it wasn't a forearm shiver but actually he hit him with his inside arm and tried to back off the hit.... hey, maybe that's thru Green Glasses but, from what I saw Welker was pulling a Jeter. Was held out for normal league- concussion checks on 1 play and went right back it.
Agreed... all Smith was thinking about was the INT and at the last second this 5'9" midget crosses paths with him... it wasn't anything intentional.
