Yes, and the team has only gotten better over the years. We are closer now than ever. Getting rid of this predictable and offensive playcalling and replacing it with something capable of consistently producing at least 14-21 points in a game is the last piece of the puzzle.
Hmm, I doubt that. I seem to remember those times and everyone knowing we were several puzzle pieces away. Historically, head coach has been what we were missing, a rather large puzzle piece. We finally have a good head coach again (since Parcells they were all atrocious). We want to win the Superbowl. Schottenheimer just doesn't cut it.
Do we have a good head coach? Seems you and everyone who is convinced that Schotty is the one thing stopping this team from winning a superbowl actually think Rex is a grade A idiot when it comes to being a head coach. How can Rex not see that Schotty is keeping him from taking this team to the superbowl? Why didn't he see this last year or during the offseason and get rid of him? You can't tell me you think Rex is a great head coach and then tell me that he is incapable of diagnosing the one overly simple problem the team has. So is Rex an idiot or is it possible you and the fire Schotty crew are oversimplifying things a bit?
Well I can't speak for everyone who wants Schotty fired, but I personally still think Rex has all the qualities that make for a good head coach. I think he has diagnosed the problem, which is why he and Brian had an altercation after the game. Your side just wants to shift the blame from Schottenheimer back to Rex. Last time I checked, the defense was #1 in the NFL last year. Your assumption is that Rex controls who the coaches are. Is it even up to Rex to fire Schottenheimer? No. With the way the Jets work that would be a Tannenbaum and Woody decision.
Who was the last Jets QB that played at expectations level or better? Chad Pennington in 2004. QB has been a very flat to poor part of the team for 5+ seasons now. It's not necessarily fair to lay that on the QB coach or even the OC, but the facts are that Jets QB's do not inspire confidence and the only one that has had even part of a really good season since 2004 was the one who told the QB coach and the OC to go sit in the corner because he knew it all already. People don't gripe randomly around here for the most part. They gripe because something has really gotten under their skin. Hackett's endless 3rd and long draws. Chad checking down and winding up with good looking stats while the Jets scored too few TD's to compete with the big boys. Clemens never getting a chance to really compete for the starting job and blowing the half chances he had with regularity. Sanchez looking shaky and Schotty looking clueless on Monday was about the third go round for me in that department. There was Chad and Clemens in 2007, Sanchez last year for a lot of the season and now Sanchez again in a huge game in which he just had to perform adequately for the Jets to win.
I think Rex is a good one too which is why I find it hard to believe that Schotty is the one problem. If it was that simple Rex would have taken care of it by now. Obviously he thinks Schotty is capable of helping to fix the problem which would suggest the problem is a bit deeper than "our offensive coordinator sucks and calls shitty plays".
My issue with the griping is that non of the things that you listed were actually the problem. There was always something deeper that was much harder to fix. We have diagnosed problems and seen them fixed for years only to realize that our one problem was actually much more than that. I think I am coming off as some big Schotty fan boy the last week or so but really I just wish everyone would realize that it's never gonna be perfect. There is always gonna be something for us to be pissed at or that needs to be fixed. Instead of being so quick to say fire this guy, get rid of this guy, if we only had this guy, etc I think a bit of patience would be good. This coaching staff took us to the AFC championship game last year with all the problems they had throughout the season. We saw some of those same issues against the Ravens but who is to say they can't fix the problems again this year? Rex needs to keep himself involved with the offense because I think Schotty is a good coach who sometimes gets caught up in trying to make his gameplan work instead of adapting it to what is happening on the field. It won't be the end of the world if Schotty is just a guy who needs to have someone in his ear making him think about changing up what he is doing during the game. Rex has to be that guy like he was last year. That color system didn't just help Sanchez it helped Schotty with the playcalling because it made him change his mentality based on the game situation. We probably don't need the color coded shit anymore but having Rex walk up to Schotty sometime in the middle of the 2nd quarter and telling him to open things up a bit or dial them down would probably do some good.
In my opinion he probably thought he was getting a guy who he could trust with running the offense, and Rex is slowly finding out that he made a mistake and now has to find a way to be involved with the offense without completely taking over. I guarantee you that because he is a 2nd year HC he is afraid to overreact and remove BS completely from the picture, as this would make it look like the Jets are in panic mode, a more seasoned HC would make the move and deal with the backlash that came with it.
My conversation with Manish Mehta Benny Bing: "Hi, Many of us over on theganggreen.com message board, are advocating for the replacement of Schottenheimer with Callahan. This evaluation is not based just on last Monday's game, but on Schottenheimer's playcalls and overall cutesy yet obvious style since he has been here. It is not clear how they could be so hard on the players and ‘cut them on the field,’ yet this guy gets a free pass for so many years on his horrible playcalling. Why can’t the Jets replace Schottenheimer with Callahan now? Doesn’t he know the playbook just as well?" Manish Mehta: "Thanks for the note. I can appreciate your concerns, but it's only been one game. Scottenheimer had some pretty good gameplans during the playoff run last year. Patience is a virtue. - M " Benny Bing:"It's only been one game this season. It's been many games with Schottenheimer over the years. I've watched every play he has called, and it has been quite painful to watch. Not quite Paul Hackett painful, but close. My friends and I can guess the play almost every play and be right because his tendencies are so obvious. If it is that easy for us to spot the oncoming play pre-snap, how easy was it for Ray Lewis and the Ravens? I'm sorry, but after 6 first downs they should have cut him on the field. You're right though - patience is a virtue. It is only a matter of time before he is gone."
Yup. It's clearly time to fire Schottenheimer. Even when the HC lets him get aggressive, he still sucks donkey genitals. Sure am glad we got rid of this jerk. OK, OK, I'm doing my best Braylon Edwards taunting schtick. I think I'll grow a beard now.
This week's performance is a total indictment of what happened last week. Very little shifting on the Jets part, no long cadences to fruitlessly try to draw the Pats offsides, almost no trickery at all besides the one wildcat play. Just straight up football, running the ball between the tackles, using designed screens and the occasional end run to punish the Pats when they got aggressive. A bunch of slants across the middle and attacking up the seams. WTF was going on last week if the Jets had this on tap?
Well am I the only one that noticed the ridiculous Manning like snap counts were absent today? Sure, we used some motion pre-snap, but it wasn't ridiculous and over the top. Simple, straight forward football. And they clearly let Sanchez off the run... did he check down once today? Part of last week was the result of playing a great defensive unit... and the other was the difference in execution and play calling. Totally different offense today. Good to see it back.
To their credit, I think that, looking at the game film they realized all the same things that we did. All the cutesy stuff doesn't work. Just line up and hit somebody. now that they know that, it's like night and day. I can't wait for Holmes to come back in week 5.
Yep, exactly. My only concern is that it sorta see-sawed like that last year as well. They'd have good showings then quickly regress again. I'd love it if they could just maintain their momentum.
