Don Mattingly will replace Joe Torre as the Los Angeles Dodgers manager after this season, according to the Los Angeles Times.

An official announcement is expected before tonight's game against the Colorado Rockies.

Mattingly currently is the Dodgers' hitting coach since midway through the 2008 season, fueling speculation that he eventually would take over for Torre, for whom he also served as hitting coach with the Yankees. Mattingly has no major league managerial experience.

Torre announced Thursday that he had made a decision about his future but that he wasn't ready to reveal it. A source told the Los Angeles Times that Torre might remain with the Dodgers in another role.

I'm good either way. I like Torre and he's been great for the Dodgers, but sometimes he makes me nuts the way he manages the pitchers.

Just sometimes IS? He drove me batshit crazy with the Yankees.

Anyway, good for Donnie Baseball. Honestly, he should be the Yankees manager now, but they burned that bridge. Instead we got Torre Jr. Hey Chicago, please come calling!

Good luck, Donnie. Unfortunately, I think you'll be horrible.

Probably worse with the Dodgers because he doesn't have Rivera at the back end to paint over his mistakes. Our bullpen has blown easliy about 15 games this year, one of them we had a 9-2 lead. Worst part about that one was I called it in the 7th inning.

I loved watching Donnie Baseball play the game and wish him nothing but success. 23 was the man it's a shame they never got him that ring.

I feel awful about the situation he's about to come into. Unless the McCourt's sell that team, the payroll is going to keep sliding on a team with a lot of holes.

Actually there's a lot of young talent in place, both pitching and position players. They need to get that divorce straightened out and use the Manny money to sure up the pen.

The Dodgers are a pretty talented team.

They inexplicably fell apart this season.

Broxton imploded, Kemp, Loney, and Ethier stopped hitting completely, and Sherrill has been awful.

With Ethier, there's a more troubling issue, because he's only really hit well with Manny behind him. Here, a guy breaks down Either's stats with Manny and without Manny.

But really, this is a loaded team.

Loney, Ethier, Kemp, Theriot, Kershaw, Billingsley, Lilly, Broxton, Kuroda, Kuo, Russell Martin (one of their problems was his injury), Furcal, Padilla

I'd certainly take that talent over most teams in the majors.

I think Don should get a year or two under his belt in the minors myself.

The NL is the next best thing. Hey-o!

Good for Mattingly. I hope he does well. For some reason, though, I think he's going to be a poor in-game manager.

Once Martin went out for the year I threw in the towel. Furcal and Manny had already been out a while, Ethier had missed time and it slowed him down, Sherrill was bad all year and Broxton went off the cliff around July. They even went and got Ted Lilly thinking guys would get back and they could make a run, then by the end of August they were unloading Manny.

I heard Coletti on the pre-game tonight, said when he hired Torre they discussed how long he'd probably manage and that they wanted continuity. So he wanted Torre to have his successor on board and it worked out like they hoped it did. Now we'll see how Mattingly does, he's Donnie Baseball so why shouldn't he get a shot?
