Actually, base set doesn't bother me at all. How the personnel is used bothers the hell out of me, instead. Either you must stretch the defense vertically or horizontally. Nobody sticks to one type of offense over his dead body. WCO is implemented just like ground and pound is implemented in today's offensive philosophy. Last Sunday, Jets were not getting the running attack going. They were not in position to challenge Ravens vertically (I don't even know why.) If vertical doesn't work, then you MUST look to stretching horizontally. If THAT fails, then the offense is truly out of option (which means the OC has done absolutely piss-poor job for a preparation) Braylon Edwards/Cotchery, with Keller, Tomlinson and Greene? GO SPREAD THEM OUT. Keller/Edwards split out, and Tomlinson/Cotchery in the slot will give you 4 WR spread set already. If you want to go unbalanced, shift Keller or Cotchery to one side. (double slot or double up on split end.) If defense still stacks the box - I know it is not likely. Defenders are not morons - then someone is getting free release outside. Is this that hard to comprehend? Ok. Why even bother spreading out? Because you can force an advantageous match-up on them. Keller on their miniscule DBs is one of the match up you can almost always exploit. Tomlinson on LB in a shallow open field? He will juke the hell out of the LB and get a sizable chunk of yard before getting tackled. Cotchery in the slot will be a very trustworthy threat that the defense must account for with a safety roll. When all is said and done, Braylon will be in a single coverage deep in downfield. There are just so many ways to create favorable mismatches, and I just have NEVER seen Schitty even bother trying to exploit that. It's a fucking shame. There is a reason I hate Schitty. I have never seen him adjust to the defense he has seen on the game day - or, adjusted successfully, on a game day.
This is what I want to see too. A no huddle with timed out routes and slants to move the ball 4-8 yards at a clip and run the ball the way they always do it, right down their throats. That kind of offense is ideal for the personnel the Jets are carrying right now. Why its not being done is beyond me.
If you can have Cotchery or Keller running quick slant from the slot... that would be very hard to stop on its own. If you then have them go zig-out, it will be another can of worm for the defenders. Oh, the mighty power of daydreaming.
I really don't give 2 shits what kind of offense they run so long as it isn't tuck your tail between your legs try not to make a mistake pussbag offense.
AMEN. Air Coryell offense is a very, VERY macho offense by nature. If it is run like a pussy, you see Schitty version of abomination that was on display under "Jets Offense" last Monday. The offense must come with a swagger of their own too. They must possess the kind of "Do what you will - we will still destroy the fuck out of you" attitude. I just don't see that with Schitty running the show.
Very good article, with the exception of Esiason's comments. First off, it's apparent that the conservative game plan on offense comes from the head coach, Ryan. Rex has to change his formula. He said he would during the off season, but it's actually gone in the other direction. Rex was afraid, even scared of his old defense that thrives on turnovers. They drilled the "no mistakes" crap into Sanchez so much, they put him in a position where it would be very difficult, almost impossible for him to make plays. They got inside Sanchez's head. The change has to come from Ryan. It is on him. The article squarely places on Ryan too. This is not the 2002 Ravens. I am REALLY sdick and tired of the Slauson bashing. Esiason sounds like a clueless fan at a urinal at the new stadium, not an ex-NFL QB. Why was Mangold helping Moore with Kelly Gregg instead of helping Slauson with Ngata on that play? Mangold needs to keep his head on straight. He has a young inexperienced LG playing next to him. Let Moore handle Gregg there. Mangold gets the free pass, and Slauson gets murdered by idiots like Esiason. It isn't just Esiason either, it's across the board with nearly every single sports talk wanker in the area, WFAN and ESPN. Even Jody Mac is clueless on this one. Now... what do you want to bet that on the first play against NE they call a deep pass to Clowney, it goes incomplete or worse, and they don't throw deep again? We've seen that shit before too. And Belichicken will be ready for that call. Predictable as all get out. With my Jets fan hat on, how about opening with an intermediate route for the first call? How about scripting the first drive like so many other teams do? Mix it up right from the start? And IF it's scripted... you know darned well that Ryan signed off on it. If you don't like the play calling.... blame Ryan. It's his team.
I think that is unfair. I hardly think and have never said Schotty has no blame in this. I just think SINGLING HIM OUT is unfair. I will say this about him, though. I think in terms of game planning he did what Ryan wanted. When we work for someone else, and they indicate they want to go in a direction that is problematic, as all of us in such a situation know it can be dicey to respond to that. In my job I have to clean up much of the mess if as I think the boss's mistake makes one. So I tend to have an added incentive to note the downside of the boss's proposal. Not everyone has that, though, and to be sure there is downside to telling the boss he is wrong. Schotty is the OC, and I am aware of the substantive criticism of the Jets offense. We don't know what kind of discussions Ryan had with him about the game plan. But should Schotty have mentioned some of the downside of a too conservative approach? I would hope so. But it can be tough telling your boss he is wrong.
Mayock is easilly, not even close, head and shoulders above anyone else as an NFL (and draft) commentator. Jerks like Esiason make these off the cuff comments that they haven't even bothered to think through. Esiason thinks he's turned into Don Imus. He has, but he isn't nearly as funny.
All right. Brett Favre never had 300 yard day while with the Jets. Eric Mangini is to blame for that too, right? *Jesus fucking Christ... these Schitty homers...*
Something TBJ said made me wonder whether last week was really all about the Ravens getting in Ryan's head, and him not wanting to let his former team win it on turnovers. So he takes the too conservative approach with them. But maybe only them? THe NE D is not as intimidating, and their O is harder to keep up with. Logic indicates the Jet O has less downside against NE to take a less conservative approach. Let's hope that's what happens, and Monday night was all about overcompensating for the Ravens D.
Do you think Ryan is aware of that stat? You noticed that Ryan is now on year two of working with BS. So, what do you think Ryan thinks of that stat? I rest my case.
I don't think there's any doubt the conservative thought came from Rex. He's pretty much said it did. I can guarantee Rex didn't have in mind the overly conservative BS we saw Monday though. He doesn't strike me as the type to tuck his tail and play scared. Rex probably said something like: We REALLY need to limit turnovers, let's make sure we don't act like a bunch of slap dicks taking unnecessary fucking chances against this defense. If we win the turnover battle, we win the fucking game. Somewhere along the line from Rex->Schottenheimer->Sanchez that translated to: OMGZ I'm so scared to turn the ball over I better just check down real quick and not even care about gaining yards. OMG Ray Lewis is out there, I just pooped!
I don't disagree with any of that. What concerns me as much as anything about Ryan is that call on fourth down in the red zone. Obviously if they went for it and went on to score, Jets probably win the game. Why didn't they? I don't really know. We can only speculate. But yeah, if the discussion moves off a dumbass pov that only BS is to blame, I have my problems with his role, too. Again I am hoping that just maybe this was limited to the Ravens game.
I have no problem w/taking the points in a game like that when your offense isn't gaining any yards on 1st -> 3rd down. If we were against Peyton Manning I'd be pissed.
There is that argument, but that argument is in fact consonant with a conservative game plan. Stepping back a bit here, I think we all are upset about the Monday night game and are trying to think through what should be done going forward. But I also think we've thought it through about as well as we can. Ryan has already said the Jets will change up the O against NE. Come Sunday we'll see whether and how they do, and how well it works. We'll have more to talk about BS's role in all that after the game, for sure.
There's a difference between conservative and scared. You can be smart and conservative without tucking your tail.
Don Banks wrote this? He basically said that Mark Sanchez looked dreadful in the opener, and even said something like "That wasn't an NFL QB performance", and now he praises him? I don't get it.
If they were half as ballsy, Id be ecstatic. Our defense plays full bore almost every play and even special teams last year had some good trick/fake plays. I dont get the split personality either.
