The Jets D was awesome last night. Take a step back form your emotions and look at the big picture before you lash out.

The defense was on the field for 38+ minutes last night. There was no late game collapse from the D. That may not qualify because the Jets were already down a point but they held firm throughout the game. They could have easily folded up their tents. They couldn't get off the field on 3rd down because of all the penalties and conversions.

Brian Thomas played like a God-damned demon and I still believe he is the most underrated player on the defensive side of the ball. We lost Jenks - again! Too many people are laying into Kyle - it was hi first pro game. He's a rookie CB getting matched up against all of the Ravens receivers. When Boldin has 8 seasons of experience over our rookie CB not to mention he is a top NFL receiver.

Look at some of the other highlights - both good and bad.

    • Our D had about a 100 yards of penalties.
    • Balt = 49 yards on 38 carries for a 1.4 average.
    • Ray Rice was held to 43 yards.
    • Balt = 57% 3rd down efficiency
    • 248 Passing Yards

Jets lost by 1 point. The D held the Ravens to 10 points.

This defense is definitely Super Bowl worthy. All things considered, the score should have been 30 - 9.

ST was phenomenal as well. +1 to Lowery for making a crushing hit on ST to spring Leonard free.

Now lets hope the "Offense" can be half of what the D is...

They need to correct the penalty problem before we can discuss "awesome" IMO. Let's see how awesome they are against the Pasts.

Penalties were horrendous. Some deserved, some of the worst were bad calls though. Clearly the bad calls were not why we lost the game...

I remember one bad call against us, when we had the Ravens 3rd and long inside their own 5 and they called holding on Cro. Other than that every penalty was earned.

Fixing the penalties is our biggest problem on defense, and lucky for the Jets... thats a pretty good problem to have.(can be fixed)

I thought that the one on Wilson (3rd and 28) was ticky tack. That ended up being a HUGE play as it cost us at least 4 points.

You could see why it was called though. It wasn't like it was a mystery call. That ref crew is known for throwing PI flags, so it was no surprise they would call that. Play the ball.

I watched the PI call on Wilson live from right above the EZ, I have not watched it on the TV yet.

It looked like a poor call to me on a rookie.

Completely agree - but that's my point. Even with the secondary pulling a Plaxico, they still held the Ravens, considered an up and coming/high power offense, to 10 points. Eliminating the offense's lack of production, the score should be way different. The Jets should have been blown out and yet they weren't. That's where the justification comes in.

Aside from the penalties, that defense was looking serious. Stuffing the run will be their specialty, but Rex needs to chill with the middle school blitz packages. Even with Flacco playing like poo, he was able to convert some big plays with the help of his wr's.

Revis was playing lights out tonight though. Dude was mirroring receivers no matter the name. Unfortunately Wilson and Cromartie had huge targets on their backs. Wilson has to make decisions fast when a receiver is coming at him full speed. Every pass catcher would just blow past dude leaving him trailing behind. Dude better bunk with Revis or he'll be an after thought on a stout defense. Cromartie just had a bad game, even with the interception. He was aggressive, sloppy and usually out of position. Bad loss, but it's only week 1 of 16. There is plenty of football to be played (not spoken), but I hope this shuts Rex Ryan up. It's annoying to other fans and a roller Coaster for jets fans.

I agree 100% ... this is a Superbowl caliber defense. Any other team in the NFL would heve lost by 2 or 3 scores under the same set of circumstances. The Ravens have a very solid offense, and I won't be surprised if they're one of the 10 highest scoring teams in the league this year.

I look at last nights game this way ... we played as bad as we can possibly play against one of the best teams in the league and we lost by 1 point. I don't expect us to ever play that poory again. I honestly believe that. We might lose to the Patriots on Sunday, but we won't embarrass ourselves again.

the defense definetly played very well. it gave the offense ample oppertunities to win this game. 3 turnovers and we only got 3 points from them.

i think the play from Ihedigbo was a saftey that they stole from us......however i dont blame the bad calls for the reason why we lost this game.

What you should say is the run defense was awsome and the pass defense sucked.

I can't believe people really think the "D" is great after watching yesterdays game. They did a good job, but were far from great.

Are you guys actually confident Brady isn't going to carve us up after watching that game? If you are I think I need to fix my picture or something.

I posted this thought on one of the other threads but it is also applicable here:

What baffled me (and I was at the game) was why, starting in the early 2nd qtr, Revis was assigned 100% of the time to cover Boldin. He was on Boldin way less than 1/2 the time including on critical 3rd down plays. It was so clear sitting in the stands and seeing Cromartie or Wilson (more Cromartie) lined up on the outside covering Boldin and with Revis over on Mason that Flacco would simply look to both sides of the field and know with 100% certainty that the play was going to Boldin. He is clearly their best and "go to" WR and we didn't try our best to stop him. I can see early in the game mixing things up and letting the flow of the game materialize but is was painfully obvious after a few series that Boldin was the guy and that they would go to him when he was not covered by Revis.

I believe that with better matchups on the Ravens WR's that the JETS squeek out a win as their were several key 3rd down conversions to Boldin.

^I actually agree with this, Revis looked great...Rex should've seen this and had him mirror the guy the whole game like last year. Unfortunately, I don't think the gameplan had that in it for this week...but Rex has to make the adjustment.

Not even close. Brady will carve us up next week and Welker will have 150 yards in the game at least.

We need to get the pass defense in order to even compete in this game.

Cromartie was terrible. The secondary is only as good as its weakest link.

Really? Did you watch the game? Obviously the Defense is "awesome". Only problems involved newcomers Cromartie and Wilson, but they will learn the system soon enough.

Yea I watched it and I saw the DB's not wearing #24 consistently getting beat like a drum and having to commit penalties to make up for it. They did a good job causing turnovers and preventing scores, but there is much work to be done.
