Hopefully they can groom McKnight by next year - they can't cut ties on a 4th round draft pick so quickly (this year).
If LT Goes, hopefully White Chocolate moves up a notch to be the pass catching option out of the backfield, that would put Washington as Greenes primary backup.
That's quite the overstatement. He had the one great ST hit, and one nice 22 yard run. His overall stats from the preseason? 20 carries for 75 yards. A 3.75 YPC average against 2nd and (mostly) 3rd stringers. He was better than McKnight, but it wasn't like he set the world on fire either.
Ahh the ideal scenario. Do these ever play out? From what I've seen of LT, it looks like SD has made a monumentally bad decision to let him go, so I think this time next year Washington is gone.
When he played against Philly he also had a fumble recovery that he had no right to make. Great vision and persistence to even be around the ball. My point for CW, is that every time hes been asked to do something, hes done it with bells on, and deserves a roster spot over McKnight .
Greene/Woodhead/Washington is an ideal scenario for our backfield? If McKnight can't develop, I hope to God we pick up another running back.
No, he doesn't. McKnight's potential merits the roster spot. His monstrous fuck ups in the preseason will leave him inactive until the fumbling is fixed, but he SHOULD be on the roster. It's not a matter of who tried the hardest, it's a matter of who has the potential to best help the team BOTH now and in the future. The fact that Washington slid easily onto our PS tells you all you need to know about how other teams view his ability to immediately contribute. No one wanted him on their active roster. I like Washington, and I'm glad he's on our PS, but some of this is ridiculous and shortsighted.
Washington would be an adequate backup for Greene. I'm not sold that McNot will ever be a better player than Woodhead.... I can see someone making the same comments 3 years down the road about McKnight as Westhoff made about Clowney. ..."Clowney's talent is undeniable...but...."
No. I would like to see Woodhead as an option until he develops and puts more meat on his bones. Right now, the dude will be taking snaps at WR as well, valuable , right there. Sts, more value. The only downside is how duarble is he as an out an out runner? Either Washington or Woodhead, which is what we have right now. Should LT or Greene go down, I'm confident that these 2 can cover for a limited amount of time. Greene has durability issues, so far, so for me, keeping Washington around makes sense.
I would never, ever, ever want to go into a season with either Woodhead or Washington getting #2 carries in a RB heavy offense. Woodhead is working as a slot receiver right now because his best fit is as a jack of all trades emergency option. I don't mind him as an emergency, and as I said earlier in another thread, if we had an injury, I'm glad he's there for the game. Having said that, there's little doubt in my mind that a season-ending injury to Greene or LT would have us picking up a new RB unless McKnight fixes the fumbling problem before that point.
So Washington is the new Clowney, McKnight is the new whipping boy, and Woodhead is still the white guy everyone loves. Please follow the line to counter #6. Your Chrebet Syndrome Vaccination will be administered to you by our Flight Crew.
Imagine if Hard Knocks happened last year? Shonn Greene would have gotten killed for fumbling and then being hurt. This board would have gone nuts.
But he isn't. And he's not close yet. He's a more talented athlete. Clearly. But then again...David Clowney is a more talented wideout than Brad Smith...but.... Today, Woodhead is the better professional... And it's not even close.
Shonn Greene fumbled, but did not show up with an attitude and shitty conditioning... As I said somewhere else...for a guy that young to be in that bad condition, should be alarming to anyone.
If Whitechocolateeaglekiller catches ten passes this year it'll be a lot. Expect him to be in on every every special teams play and on offense in garbage time. People are really overvaluing Danny Woodhead.
This team is built to win now though, so by your argument, Washington deserves the roster spot. Agreed, he is very talented and was a relatively high draft pick, but that should not give him Carte Blanche to a roster spot. I don't believe that no one wanted him, even in hard knocks Mike T said that there were inquiries for him (CW). Apart from one decent punt return McKnight has shown that he really looks a like rabbit in headlights and nothing more, work in progress. Mr McKnight, meet Mr Gholston.
He had 8 catches on 14 targets last year. He's easily going to have more than 10 catches this season, especially if we decide not to pick up another WR after this week.
